I started with the base game and went all the way through Shadowbringers. For me personally, it was pretty addictive, also enjoyed the story and just watching my character grow in popularity and strength. I still think it's way better than WoW, or it kept my attention a lot more than WoW did. In WoW there is no coherent story, and the game doesn't tell you what to do to progress the "main story" you're expected to level up off 300+ side quests in random cities/jungles. In FFXIV you have an actual MSQ with a special icon that tells you where to go to progress the MSQ, and I just enjoyed that a lot more. The game has different icons for different quests, some actually unlock new features but it's nice knowing which ones do that and which ones don't.
Heavensward is boring as shit, and Stormblood is only good for the Japan part, but the revolution section is lame as frick and boring. Shadowbringers was the first expansion that I liked pretty much all of it.
Dawntrail isn't fricking coming out till SUMMER 2024, they have plenty of fricking time to catch up, like a long time, almost a fricking year before the next expansion comes out. The game is going to be drip-fed for the next ten months on content.

I just played a bit every day, maybe 3-4 hours a day, but I played much longer on the weekends. There is no real grind except if you're leveling up other jobs than your primary. The main story quests are enough to keep you leveled up to max for whatever story quest you're currently on. They made that change a long time ago for the better. You can literally just leave all the side quests for your characters others jobs

The only gameplay in this game is playing Eureka, Bozja and doing the Deep Dungeons, I rushed to the endgame, took me about 2 weeks, I skipped all that could be skipped.
If you can't no-life this game, it is a bad game, and if you can no-life this game, you have to switch between servers all day long and wait on timers for completionist items, you have to be on several discords if you want them to pop-up and warn you about something, if you want to do deep dungeons, which is the best content the game has, you need 3 other people, usually you can get them on the deep dungeon discord, but sometimes the people you get stuck with are so stupid it's not worth it.
