The Voice Director did an atrocious job. They're the one responsible for the final take and using it. The voice actor just does what the Director wants. I swear it's like you have no idea how the industry works.

While I agree that making up for a dev's blatant incompetence sucks, I would say that not all modding is just cleaning up a mess. Some games release with problems due to development hell that was outside their control, some games have missing features simply because the dev didn't personally feel it was needed, and some changes can be made on preferences for different texture work, lighting, UI control, and other bits and bobs.
A good example would be one of my favorite mods for Fallout New Vegas that simply makes it where the game has the Fallout 4 looting system. Instead of having to click on every container, go into a separate menu, loot what you want, then close the menu, it does it all seamlessly without pausing. You hover over a container, immediately see what's inside, and can loot it all without pausing the game or entering a menu that freezes the world.
Sure, the devs could have done that. But that was a feature that was introduced in the series years after the game came out.
Also, say you love a game but hate one aspect about it. Just because that aspect sucks shit doesn't mean you hate everything else. So maybe you just want to clean that one part up. Is it cleaning a dev's mess up? Maybe, but it's possibly worth doing because everything else the dev did was great. Devs aren't perfect and will always screw something up. Same goes for any product really. So if a game is good enough to justify some extra attention from fans, it's really not that bad to me.

When something's of questionable quality, especially when it's replacing/supplementing an already existing bit of media, it brings the crazies out.
Ada's new VA isn't atrocious, but it was definitely a massive step back compared to her recent depictions. Most of her lines sounded lifeless and without any of the teasing nature of how Ada is usually portrayed. It really felt as if she was simply reading from a script rather than identifying with the character who is supposed to be this somewhat full of herself secret agent type with questionable morals. In the remake, she sounds bored and states things extremely matter of fact. Which stands out even more when you have most of the other VAs doing a pretty solid job of matching the characters' personalities.
It 100% deserves criticism of either the voice actress' performance or how Capcom directed her voice acting (which Capcom is infamous for terrible voice direction). Obviously death threats and everything are always going to be absurd, but I honestly don't see an issue in finding ways to replace the voice with better performances. If graphics are rough, you get modders improving the textures. If music is poorly mixed, you get modders cleaning it up. If gameplay is buggy, you get modders making changes.
This isn't any different. People taking offense that the VA's work is being "insulted" should be just as angry about modders fixing up other aspects of games that suck shit.

It's like I said, you'll always have the crazies sending death threats and doing stupid bullshit. But there tends to be some basis for the outrage, in which, yeah, Ada's voice acting really fell flat. In a game with a cult based around a parasite that are seeking to take over the world by infecting the president's daughter, a government agent sent in to rescue her by doing literal suplexes on the locals, and a mysterious agent of questionable morals sneaking around and using a grappling hook to steal the parasite away, having a VA basically just read off a script as if they just woke up ten minutes ago isn't great.
It also doesn't help that it's a remake. People associate remakes with the idea that it's an attempt to improve upon the original. Which that's a pretty fair assessment when they're charging you full price for a game that came out years and years ago. So when one aspect that was fine in the original is glaringly bad in the remake, it stands out even more and riles people up.

Ada isn’t really full of herself. She’s truly in love with Leon, but tries and fails hide her feelings for him so she continue her job. It’s why she risked her life to protect Leon against Mr X in the original RE2, and didn’t have the heart to shoot him in RE2R. The Japanese version of RE3’s Ada Epilogue even describes Leon as the man she loves, how the scar she has now was something she got while protecting him, and how she wants to throw away that part of herself. That didn’t work, since she goes out of her way in both versions of RE4 to help and protect Leon, and her decision to betray Wesker in the remake was because of Leon asking her if she had changed.
Good one. Her VA work in RE4 Remake is such a fricking disgrace that has had all sorts of people ranging from sound engineers to other VAs going "What the frick is this?" There's no emotion in parts where there should be and she clearly did a lot of it in an undeserved WFH environment because hers is clearly not professional enough given the sound quality.

Only thing that would make me question that is the fact that the other VAs for the remake were fine. Maybe not 10/10 by any means, but Leon, Ashley, and Luis were all solid.

Yeah, it was weird how even her audio quality sounded somewhat worse compared to the others. I genuinely wonder if she was brought in at the last second to do Ada's lines. It feels rushed in both performance and actual audio quality.
More than likely the studio did bring her on at the last moment, possibly because there was at the time the controversy of using white actors to play asian or black characters. So they got an asian voice as quickly as possible.

Bummer if that's the case. She probably is a bad VA considering the kind of quality you can see in the parts she's played before, but there's basically no way to tell whether it's a lack of skill or because she was rushed through it all.
Even a good voice actor would struggle to put any quality into their work if they only have a few days to learn the part, get the lines down/match the tone of scenes, and are walked through the process by a director that's also being rushed. It could genuinely not be her fault and she was just working with what she had.
But who knows. Either way, it came out bad and I doubt we'll get much of an answer as to why any time soon.

Well, if you're being rushed, the director may just basically say, "We need you to read these lines in a somewhat sultry voice. We don't have time to tell you about what the character is doing in the scene and the context, just read the lines." Sure, her voice acting isn't good. But it doesn't help that it feels like the lines don't fit with the context of the scenes. It legit felt like they didn't tell her, "Hey, in this scene you're talking to a guy you tricked years ago while also trying to stay somewhat aloof."
Also, considering how Capcom handles voice acting (see early RE games in all their glory), I wouldn't be surprised if the directors fricked up big time with her direction specifically.

Yeah, that's probably the most likely explanation. They were likely rushed, the direction was lack, but most importantly, she just didn't care enough. I could easily see someone like that feeling that a "video game" doesn't need much effort compared to proper on-screen cinema or whatever the frick.
That happens with a lot of actors actually that do proper movies/shows that get dragged in for VA work. Take Kiefer Sutherland in MGSV where he's basically mumbling every line and sounds bored as frick. There's absolutely a stigma I'm sure of video games not needing any real effort put in compared to movies/shows.

AI needs to be banned, this is genuinely terrifying beyond what I can put into words. I haven't played the remake and thought that the first clip played was the AI due to the unnatural dead monotone while the second following was the actual voice actor since there's true emotion there. Figured this was some goober using the original Ada's voice as an AI without any actual effort into how the performance would sound, so it came out as dull and drab, but no. It took me actually going to nexus and seeing some comments to realize I switched up which was which. Holy shit does this need to be regulated and removed from public access immediately if AI can outperform professional voice actors to such a drastic degree. Let me tell you something funny. I haven't heard a single thing from Re4make. Never. I clicked the link, simply because I knew that people didn't like the voice, but no other context. When the started playing the voices, I didn't realize that it was a comparison and instead a showcase. I heard the most lifeless fricking performance I have EVER seen in recent years, this is almost on the level of Chaos Wars, where the localizers got random family members to do the voices because they didn't have the budget to actually get anyone else. I haven't played the remake and thought that the first clip played was the AI due to the unnatural dead monotone while the second following was the actual voice actor since there's true emotion there. Figured this was some goober using the original Ada's voice as an AI without any actual effort into how the performance would sound, so it came out as dull and drab, but no. It took me actually going to nexus and seeing some comments to realize I switched up which was which. Holy shit does this need to be regulated and removed from public access immediately if AI can outperform professional voice actors to such a drastic degree. The main issue is that I legitimately couldn't tell with, what I'm assuming now looking into it further, is a newer voice actress onto the scene that only did a role in one of the prior resident evil screen projects. True, AI could absolutely make it harder for people to get more practice/experience while breaking into an already difficult industry to establish yourself in. I would argue though, with the way social media is and how media sharing sites like Youtube work, it's so much easier to get your talent out there. As much as people may or may not like them, look at ProZD or otherYoutube creators that got into pretty big games because someone saw what they could do in bite-sized form. Instead of desperately scrambling to advertise and recruit a voice actor that isn't going to charge you thousands of dollars for a second of their time, you can easily see talent publically.
To which, back to your point, people do still prefer proper humans filling roles. AI is becoming better and better, but it still has a weirdness to it. Still has that uncanny valley with weird tone inflections and pauses/breaks. Most devs still seem to prefer proper VAs because of that. And, so long as the VA shows some talent (which is easier these days to do so), companies will continue to value that talent.
Maybe in another 10 years or so AI will get to the point where there are legit concerns. I would argue there will always be some prejudice towards it and preference for genuine human inflection, but there is a concern. But right now? Like I said before, if a VA sounds less human than the AI, people need to worry about the VA first.

Yes the AI knows how to do inflection and can be guided with emotional tags, it's still not as good as a human reading it but it won't be long until you can give it better direction through markup and tags.

It's like they took audio from one of the motion capture actors and someone was like "Don't worry, we'll get VAs to fix it!" then forgot.
Lily Gao is hot trash. Her performance was so bad it made me dislike Ada Wong as a character. I wasn't looking forward to playing through the game with such grating, unenthusiastic and painfully dull delivery in my ears. Ada flirts with Leon. She's friendly towards him. After the events of RE2 he's more closed off. Not as fun as care-free as his original RE4 incarnation but shades of Leon's charm is still there, he's just more reserved toward Ada. The AI paints a picture of Ada trying to melt the icy exterior that she played a hand in Leon developing after the events of Raccoon City. It's the fricking subtle, little touches with her delivery that paints her as putting forth effort while Leon is all reserved.
Meanwhile Gao plays Ada like she doesn't want to be there. Like, Ada was going through the fricking numbers. Her performance clashes with the character's dynamic with and it's embarrassing to watch after going through so many games with the two interacting. >b-but she's asian!
And she did a bad fricking job. The statement she tried to put out for damage control was another nail in the coffin.

To run for tens or hundreds of thousands of users. For $6000 you can make a dual 4090 setup. The 70B models are already quite good and with finetuning and Loras are starting to beat GPT3.5. We're not that far from 144B models either which will be competing against GPT-4. Let's not even talk about OpenAI basically brute forcing AI models and certainly aren't the standard of how to do it cheaply or efficiently. Nor the breakthroughs in CPU-based implementations that just need RAM to run. 256GB of RAM isn't that expensive and now you have a local GPT-4 (in 2ish years).

While I agree that making up for a dev's blatant incompetence sucks, I would say that not all modding is just cleaning up a mess. Some games release with problems due to development hell that was outside their control, some games have missing features simply because the dev didn't personally feel it was needed, and some changes can be made on preferences for different texture work, lighting, UI control, and other bits and bobs.
A good example would be one of my favorite mods for Fallout New Vegas that simply makes it where the game has the Fallout 4 looting system. Instead of having to click on every container, go into a separate menu, loot what you want, then close the menu, it does it all seamlessly without pausing. You hover over a container, immediately see what's inside, and can loot it all without pausing the game or entering a menu that freezes the world.
Sure, the devs could have done that. But that was a feature that was introduced in the series years after the game came out.
Also, say you love a game but hate one aspect about it. Just because that aspect sucks shit doesn't mean you hate everything else. So maybe you just want to clean that one part up. Is it cleaning a dev's mess up? Maybe, but it's possibly worth doing because everything else the dev did was great. Devs aren't perfect and will always screw something up. Same goes for any product really. So if a game is good enough to justify some extra attention from fans, it's really not that bad to me.

When something's of questionable quality, especially when it's replacing/supplementing an already existing bit of media, it brings the crazies out.
Ada's new VA isn't atrocious, but it was definitely a massive step back compared to her recent depictions. Most of her lines sounded lifeless and without any of the teasing nature of how Ada is usually portrayed. It really felt as if she was simply reading from a script rather than identifying with the character who is supposed to be this somewhat full of herself secret agent type with questionable morals. In the remake, she sounds bored and states things extremely matter of fact. Which stands out even more when you have most of the other VAs doing a pretty solid job of matching the characters' personalities.
It 100% deserves criticism of either the voice actress' performance or how Capcom directed her voice acting (which Capcom is infamous for terrible voice direction). Obviously death threats and everything are always going to be absurd, but I honestly don't see an issue in finding ways to replace the voice with better performances. If graphics are rough, you get modders improving the textures. If music is poorly mixed, you get modders cleaning it up. If gameplay is buggy, you get modders making changes.
This isn't any different. People taking offense that the VA's work is being "insulted" should be just as angry about modders fixing up other aspects of games that suck shit.

But there tends to be some basis for the outrage, in which, yeah, Ada's voice acting really fell flat. In a game with a cult based around a parasite that are seeking to take over the world by infecting the president's daughter, a government agent sent in to rescue her by doing literal suplexes on the locals, and a mysterious agent of questionable morals sneaking around and using a grappling hook to steal the parasite away, having a VA basically just read off a script as if they just woke up ten minutes ago isn't great.
It also doesn't help that it's a remake. People associate remakes with the idea that it's an attempt to improve upon the original. Which that's a pretty fair assessment when they're charging you full price for a game that came out years and years ago. So when one aspect that was fine in the original is glaringly bad in the remake, it stands out even more and riles people up.

The Japanese version of RE3’s Ada Epilogue even describes Leon as the man she loves, how the scar she has now was something she got while protecting him, and how she wants to throw away that part of herself. That didn’t work, since she goes out of her way in both versions of RE4 to help and protect Leon, and her decision to betray Wesker in the remake was because of Leon asking her if she had changed.

More than likely the studio did bring her on at the last moment, possibly because there was at the time the controversy of using white actors to play asian or black characters. So they got an asian voice as quickly as possible.
Bummer if that's the case. She probably is a bad VA considering the kind of quality you can see in the parts she's played before, but there's basically no way to tell whether it's a lack of skill or because she was rushed through it all.
Even a good voice actor would struggle to put any quality into their work if they only have a few days to learn the part, get the lines down/match the tone of scenes, and are walked through the process by a director that's also being rushed. It could genuinely not be her fault and she was just working with what she had.
But who knows. Either way, it came out bad and I doubt we'll get much of an answer as to why any time soon.

Well, if you're being rushed, the director may just basically say, "We need you to read these lines in a somewhat sultry voice. We don't have time to tell you about what the character is doing in the scene and the context, just read the lines." Sure, her voice acting isn't good. But it doesn't help that it feels like the lines don't fit with the context of the scenes. It legit felt like they didn't tell her, "Hey, in this scene you're talking to a guy you tricked years ago while also trying to stay somewhat aloof."
Also, considering how Capcom handles voice acting (see early RE games in all their glory), I wouldn't be surprised if the directors fricked up big time with her direction specifically.
Yeah, that's probably the most likely explanation. They were likely rushed, the direction was lack, but most importantly, she just didn't care enough. I could easily see someone like that feeling that a "video game" doesn't need much effort compared to proper on-screen cinema or whatever the frick.
That happens with a lot of actors actually that do proper movies/shows that get dragged in for VA work. Take Kiefer Sutherland in MGSV where he's basically mumbling every line and sounds bored as frick. There's absolutely a stigma I'm sure of video games not needing any real effort put in compared to movies/shows.

it all depends on the sampling and settings. Also, you don’t even have to mimic their tone of voice. You just throw a script in and generate a few samples until you get what you want. Usually takes 1-3 tries.

I haven't played the remake and thought that the first clip played was the AI due to the unnatural dead monotone while the second following was the actual voice actor since there's true emotion there. Figured this was some goober using the original Ada's voice as an AI without any actual effort into how the performance would sound, so it came out as dull and drab, but no. It took me actually going to nexus and seeing some comments to realize I switched up which was which. True, AI could absolutely make it harder for people to get more practice/experience while breaking into an already difficult industry to establish yourself in. I would argue though, with the way social media is and how media sharing sites like Youtube work, it's so much easier to get your talent out there. As much as people may or may not like them, look at ProZD or otherYoutube creators that got into pretty big games because someone saw what they could do in bite-sized form. Instead of desperately scrambling to advertise and recruit a voice actor that isn't going to charge you thousands of dollars for a second of their time, you can easily see talent publically.
To which, back to your point, people do still prefer proper humans filling roles. AI is becoming better and better, but it still has a weirdness to it. Still has that uncanny valley with weird tone inflections and pauses/breaks. Most devs still seem to prefer proper VAs because of that. And, so long as the VA shows some talent (which is easier these days to do so), companies will continue to value that talent.
Maybe in another 10 years or so AI will get to the point where there are legit concerns. I would argue there will always be some prejudice towards it and preference for genuine human inflection, but there is a concern. But right now? Like I said before, if a VA sounds less human than the AI, people need to worry about the VA first.

Lily Gao is hot trash. Her performance was so bad it made me dislike Ada Wong as a character. I wasn't looking forward to playing through the game with such grating, unenthusiastic and painfully dull delivery in my ears. Ada flirts with Leon. She's friendly towards him. After the events of RE2 he's more closed off. Not as fun as care-free as his original RE4 incarnation but shades of Leon's charm is still there, he's just more reserved toward Ada. The AI paints a picture of Ada trying to melt the icy exterior that she played a hand in Leon developing after the events of Raccoon City. It's the fricking subtle, little touches with her delivery that paints her as putting forth effort while Leon is all reserved.
Meanwhile Gao plays Ada like she doesn't want to be there. Like, Ada was going through the fricking numbers. Her performance clashes with the character's dynamic with and it's embarrassing to watch after going through so many games with the two interacting.

The hard parts of voice acting are the voice and following directions. The voice is taken care of and you're your own director. If even then you can't voice act well, you're an NPC like 90% of people.

We're not that far from 144B models either which will be competing against GPT-4. Nor the breakthroughs in CPU-based implementations that just need RAM to run. 256GB of RAM isn't that expensive and now you have a local GPT-4 (in 2ish years).
