Just a tip for you guys.
If you've never seen your ideas fully realized as a video game, you can't know whether it's a good idea or not.

          Anonymous

I've pitched/told some ideas to multiple people for feed back etc, all told they are pretty good most of the time but I tweak some based on feedback. I usually try not tot ell friends because I dont want any bias in my pitches.

What if its not a game, but you have fully planned out mechanics, created a prototype card/tabe top model representing said mechanics and from testing that you know its a good game idea?

            Anonymous

That's a kind of dedication that someone who's "just an ideas guy" would never have.

Boring. Videogames are brilliant because no other medium like tabletop games can replicate them.

A proof of concept is all you need.
Borrow some music, and some graphics, and you have a decent idea of how a game can turn out.

are you describing a "vertical slice", something that can still take months of work even with an asset store?

              Anonymous

No, he is describing a prototype.
A vertical slice is more like a demo of a finished game, meaning it's much further into development.

The reason why Japanese games are so good is because they do actually have "idea guys" as a job. Westerners scoff at people who have ideas that's why Western games are soulless garbage made by programmer drones.

its not but I am like OP. I cannot code worth shit but I come up with some good ideas.

everybody has "ideas", having them is not a remarkable skill
but making something of those ideas is work, be it writing or programming or drawing
if you've actually ever *created* something, no matter how simple or shallow, you would know that pleasant dreams in your mind don't come out exactly perfect in harsh material reality

What if you have made a literal design bible for a concept, completely fleshed out a whole game start to finish, detailed map, puzzle designs finished and tested, rough sketches and notes to be used by artists as well as basic "cause>effect" outlines for a programmer of approximately how game systems should function and lets say you have filled up a file cabinet with said design documents that have been worked on for close to 20 years. Is that still just an idea guy territory? Asking for a friend.

Why do you guys keep hyping yourselves up this much?
If you have the patience to make a GDD, you should also have the patience to learn how to program.

              Anonymous

Not if you have ADHD. Design documents are just concentrated autism made material, programming requires an actual functioning brain and memory.

            Anonymous

""problem"" with design docs is that they are not some magical prescriptive truth, not a bible, but a simple document with a general outline
you're welcome to show it to your programmer/artist/writer, but then try to contain your autistic rage as they pick apart what they like themselves
gotta have guts to kill your darlings or just stash them away for future use

            Click on this link: http://gameshelf.jmac.org/2008/11/13/GrimPuzzleDoc_small.pdf
It's the design document for Grim Fandango. Now I don't care what your opinions of Tim Schafer these days are because he's made several more well-beloved games in his time than you have. Look at the document and then remember that TIM CAN WRITE SOFTWARE.
He's got a great quote I can't find right now about idea guys. It's something like "You've got an idea? Great! Why would anyone else produce it for you? Everyone in the industry has a desk drawer full of their own ideas they would prefer to see made."
The point being that if you've invested so much time building cool mechanics, maps, plots, etc. then you should be able to learn a little programming to bring it to life. It's not easy, but it seems like you want to make your shit a reality. You've spent 20 years writing; you can become a halfway decent programmer in a year or two.

I’m so fricking moronic and autistic that I can’t understand anything about code or even “easy”/ “beginner friendly” engines like renpy, unity or rpg maker, I can’t even make a game of pong following a step by step video, also I can’t draw anything, I thought that maybe I could find a team of artists and programmers to help me but I don’t have any money and it would take years of savings just to get a demo out, next year I’m going to try to enter at a private vidya design/art collage, for now I just need to find a wagie job to maintain myself and save for college

    Another art guy here.
We should make our own game.
Was thinking something like a guy goes to a school... for monster people or freaks, we can also add a japanese sounding name to attract eastern and western neets.
We could add more girls and areas of the school/city as DLC instead of making people wait with 0.001b versions like most weggers do.
We could call it, Monster Shoujo or something.

we talking collectaprostitute or an RPG?

        Anonymous

        Both.
The plot could be about something that allows you to interact with every girl (if you want to), something like Commander John Shepard but in highschool and with monster, we could have alien girls of course.
You would have all girls at your disposal until you got locked in a route, i know its cheap and not in line with most VNs that lock you early on for a better story/route development. But choices or the illusion of a lot of choices are very important in this ADHD zoomer riddled market.

I'm writing a book based on the initial premise of WoW Shadowlands.
And before you sneer at me, the premise of
    >Everyone who has died for the past [X amount of time] has gone directly to hell. Fix it.
Is a pretty good story setup.

      Anonymous

Thats cringe and not good. Literally no one gives a shit about nuwow lore because its not canon. Only the Warcraft games were full canon, vanilla wow was mostly canon with a few inconsistencies, and ever since tbc it has been 100% trash fan fiction.
You are writing bad fan fiction about bad fan fiction. No one will care about your book.

        Anonymous

        You misunderstand.
I'm not actually writing about WoW.
        I'm writing about
who has died for the past [X amount of time] has gone directly to hell. Fix it.
And nothing to do with WoW.

        I understand your confusion, however.
