There are a bunch of versions of this game on steam. Which one is the best? What are the differences?

      Anonymous

Repentence is arguably the "best" by virtue of being the most complete version
differences are mainly characters and items being added/removed/changed
i think some mechanics change from version to version
don't remember off the top of my head

there's actually only 2 versions, but nicalis peeps are a bunch of incompetent fricks so it gets confusing.

This may come off as contrarian, but I like vanilla rebirth best. I suggest starting with that and only adding the DLCs if you've played the game for hundreds of hours and want more content and difficulty. Note that each DLC has a prerequisite of the previous DLC, but you can add it all as a bundle during a sale down the line.

There's two versions. "The binding of isaac", which has 1 expansion (wrtah of the lamb) and its remake "The binding of isaac rebirth" which has 3 expansion packs which can only be bought in order (afterbirth, afterbirth+, repentance"

isaac's big advantage is in quantity mostly. i agree the mechanics are good, but only just. as an action roguelite it needs be compared to every other action roguelite in existence. even at the time of its release, the true trailblazer before it (spelunky) was more fun to play imo. and then nuclear throne takes the top down bullet hell thing and makes it more fun. and then dead cells comes out and is the finest roguelite mechanically amongst action lites. isaac has had worthy competition for as long as it has existed.

the other problem for isaac is that, as a game that was part of the vanguard of roguelites, most people have played it and played it a lot, meaning it's pretty easy for most players with some familiarity. the same was true of spelunky of course. how did derek yu solve this problem? he made spelunky 2 harder than spelunky hd by a factor of like, 3 or 4 times. the best possible choice. repentance meanwhile does introduce a more difficult path but it's not hard enough. the mechanics of the game can't support a proper expansion of difficulty to meet the needs of its most seasoned players.

i hunger for a world where gungeon was actually good because mechanically it's straight up superior to isaac. it just needs more everything to take the throne.

what makes isaac work is that the combat is simple, it focuses more on knowledge checks and items than having to be mechanically complex. which is why i agree with your point on spelunky. but games like dead cells quite literally have little to no variance in how you play despite being more mechanically in depth, you pick a weapon, upgrade said weapon, and stack scrolls of the weapon type and that's it, it follows the same traps of other modern roguelites where the game just wants you to grind instead of actually being interesting from run to run. quite literally the only game that have gotten it right since isaac/spelunky is noita.

        >but games like dead cells quite literally have little to no variance in how you play despite being more mechanically in depth, you pick a weapon, upgrade said weapon, and stack scrolls of the weapon type and that's it
right, we can describe every game in this kind of manner though. we're describing the meta progression of each given run with dead cells here, but the real joy of dead cells is the game in and of itself separated away from the roguelite progression elements. the core gameplay is more compelling than isaac. i agree isaac has better metaprogression but that's not the first thing that matters about a video game, rather, it's the feeling of moving and combating that matters most and dead cells wins that space.

          Anonymous

well i think we just have different ideas of what makes a good roguelike, to me games like dead cells start and end at it's mechanical gameplay, which gets kinda boring in a genre that is meant to be replayed over and over, but games like noita and isaac keep me compelled cause the interactions of the systems despite have super simple gameplay. i don't think the way deadcells and at this point the vast majority of roguelikes does it is bad but they feel like completely different games to something like a spelunky/noita/isaac

      Anonymous

No more knife piece "puzzles", instead there's sidequests to get them
      >Downpour -> go through mirror world as one-hit Lost to get the knife piece in the parallel item room
      >Mines -> go through a boring 1 minute chase with a shadow of mom to get knife piece 2
No more knife piece 3, which means no more teleporter in Mausoleum
Mausoleum lost a good amount of enemies from Antibirth
Book of Virtues now is a passive item, and you get unique wisps based on your active item
Some items removed because they were redundant (Voodoo Pit) or didn't fit (Menorah), or some for just no reason (Stone Bombs)
Witness is now renamed Mother and the fight takes place in a 1x2 room, completely different, arguably worse, certainly less spectacle. No more "genuinely killing mom" story, the boss is just an ugly drawing isaac made
No mudeth soundtrack, Ridiculon did their own songs

I am just speaking from what was directly brought from Antibirth, there is a FRICK TON of new stuff on top of Anibirth (new alt floors to Antibirth alt path, new bosses, a new final path and ending, tons of new items/trinkets/enemies)
Some of those changes I said are good, it's just that the ambitions of Antibirth were rolled back a bit
Repentance is absolutely still the best version of the game, and mods can certainly restore some of the old stuff
You absolutely have to play it

Repentance is the only game to make me consider using CE, SAM and generally cheat to get the achievements, the constant trend to nerf good items and cancel interactions is fricking terrible in a game that is generally unbalanced, I just cannot see myself giving Edc**t another 300 hours of my life to get to a 100%, again, for the 6th time (counting from the original isaac).

I already got all the completion marks with Jacob and Essau, The Keeper and The Lost legit, you can stop making shit tryhard characters now Edmund, God Damn, I just want to play Revelations instead. At least do not void the the achievements while using mods...

      Anonymous

anon you can make mods and achievements both work, you can even make console + achievements work, i have it working that way right now
not that it matters, i got my dead god and now I'm done

        Anonymous

S...should I cheat? I only have the terrible Tainted characters left. I already got the marks for Tainted Lost which was fun but I fricking hate Tainted Cain so much. I would try for Tainted Jacob since I do think that is a skillful character if that was the only character left but I am really pressed on time.

          Anonymous

Tainted Cain is some of the worst fricking shit. He's fun for exactly one (1) fricking run when the idea is still novel, then the character takes the unique parts of isaac (resource shuffling) and makes them mandatory and twenty times more annoying. I wouldn't feel remotely guilty about cheating your way through him- most people who play him do something dumb like setting up a resource exploit and crafting a billion Eden's Blessings.

    >runs like shit for no goddamn reason
    >doubly so with mods (which it claims to support)
    >half the characters are defined by removing access to some number of core mechanics in exchange for a gimmick (at best) or LITERALLY NOTHING (at worst)
    >last person to do a balance pass on the game thinks no item runs are fun
    >game was left with several core pieces of content required for completion, the capstones to their own types of runs, horrendously bugged and inordinately unfair
    >many items are useless or outright detrimental outside of very specific circumstances, and base character power is overall low, so many runs are defined by getting just a couple of truly notable items

    but most damning of all
    >game has this brilliant balance where everything is a resource that can be shuffled around and spent in highly calculated ways if you know what you're doing
    >but almost nobody can do it by default, so it's all beholden to RNG getting you access to the tools you need
    >and before even that you're absolutely going to fricking hate the game if you try to make EVERY run work
    >it's still best to at least wait to get a decent item or two before investing full effort into a run because like five characters out of the entire cast are truly fun to play without items
It's still my absolute favorite roguelite, but goddamn is it infuriating in some ways. At least I got dead god, so all that's left is messing around with mods.

All those issues were fixed on Issac Eternal with challenge rooms that give you the good items after passing an insanely difficult early game skill check, not to mention Delirium is the worst thing ever, it feels like the game was balanced around twitch streamers so they have something to show rather than the average Isaac Enjoyer.

        Anonymous

Eternal Edition is a version of flash isaac so half of my positive points don't exist and half of the negatives are implicit.
        >Resource manipulation tools hardly exist
        >Runs worse than any version of rebirth could hope to
        >Many fun items are mutually exclusive instead of synergistic
        >Less bosses, less content overall
        >Eternal enemies and bosses are both objectively anti fricking fun
A game balanced for Isaac Enjoyers would save anything legitimately challenging for after the Basement. Not because it's "unfair", but because I want it to be within my power to have a good build before I fight anything actually hard.
