Its still massively behind standards, but its improved.
Prob cuz they fired like 99% of the 343 staff earlier this year, so all the dead weight is gone, just a bunch of nerds crunch-timing now to make the game good (otherwise they're out of a job too)

All the Xbox games also release on PC because it's Microsoft. There's really no justification for getting an xbox over a gaming PC.
The xbox is cheaper, but a good gaming PC can last over multiple console generations and it's backwards compatible with everything.

Sony is still a little reluctant to release their games on PC and Nintendo flat out refuses. So their consoles are still relevant, but it's artificial.

          >it's backwards compatible with everything.
Unfortunately Microsoft sees that as a bug, and not a feature and is planning to move users who buy prebuilt hardware to ARM in the future.
When a user goes onto a mainstream online store, or walks into a brick and mortar store their choices are all going to be a cheap Windows Home system running Windows 12 for ARM.

It will be as difficult to buy a system running Windows 11 on an x86 processor in 2025, as it currently is to buy a prebuilt system pre-installed with a Linux distribution other than ChromeOS or SteamOS.

I generally agree with your post but the cost of PC gaming went up. NVIDIA cards aren't entry level friendly as they were price wise. Back in the day we would help people build a PC under strict budgets since the market was fair, but this is a whole new ball game we're playing with modern day GPU prices.

Sometimes I think about how much the 360 gen must have stung for Xbox. Because it was the one gen in which they were truly successful, tons of consoles and game sales. But they lost a ton of money because of the red ring of death and how it made them have to commit to replacing millions of consoles for free. That shit must still haunt them

The problem is that we need competition in the market and we need it from someone who isn't a trillion dollar corporation.

I wish Sega never left the console market and was actually competent enough to light a fire up both Sony and Nintendo's ass. I would be willing to give up the convenience of their games being on PC for that.

Not that anon but what is the ballpark percentage of how many games on Steam work on the Deck? More than half? Because the closer it gets to 100% the less incentive I have on building a new gaming PC in the future and just focus on the future Steam Deck variants.

            Anonymous

In terms of a tested 'console' experience on the Deck hardware? Something around 40% currently, although the standard Valve is holding games to for that is extremely strict.
ProtonDB has a slightly less strict measure for if the game works without any tinkering, and that is between 40% and 70%, for AMD users it is much closer to the 70%, for Nvidia users the 40% is more accurate.
Although with 'tinkering', where that is most commonly simply selecting a different compatibility tool like ProtonGE that can be closet to 90% for AMD and 70% for Nvidia.

The big issues currently for Proton are games that use NT kernel targeted malware, Microsoft patented media codecs, or that are depending on specific undocumented Windows behavior nobody has encountered in the history of Wine, or that require a fix to be enabled.
Those last two categories are often a third-party compatibility tool away from working. The first category is the really hard one, especially when some developers are politically motivated against open platforms like Epic. Who claim they want open platforms, but really want special treatment from the owners of closed platforms.

            Anonymous

Definitely more than half. It's becoming increasingly rare to find games that don't work at all. The only exception are multiplayer games that use Windows-only anti-cheats. There's even a site that tracks them https://areweanticheatyet.com/

The golden age for consoleslop maybe. Consoles were even more anemic back then compared to PCs.

At least when you buy a console nowadays, it can manage a somewhat modern resolution and refresh rate. You were lucky if a console of the sixth gen gave you 480p.

Technology can't catch up to cloud gaming, because it's all dependant on the connection between you and the datacenter
Getting awful latency with game streaming on your shitty home broadband? The solution there is to move houses.
None of the game streaming companies control the telco infra, and even if they did it'd be so absurdly expensive to upgrade it simply wouldn't be worth it.
That's not to mention scaling issues. Every major city would need its own gaming-only datacentre which also isn't happening. It is just so much easier to sell a standalone game console.

Stadia's issue was more Google's unwillingness to really invest in the idea to get publishers on board more than any fundamental issue with the idea of web delivered games itself. Microsoft on the other hand, have been buying up game publishers left and right.

There are a lot of things you can do to help make a web delivered game work. You can use anti-lag to try to predict potential actions by the user, you can use upscaling and frame-generation to reduce the bandwidth needed for a stream, you can have a local runtime that handles some aspects of the game on the users local system like having delivered frames 20% larger than the viewport where a fraction of a second of camera movement is possible locally.

The only way to do it is to provide a better service. Cheap PCs to instill brand loyalty and then Game Pass would be it. Hell, sell a $700 mid range PC that has Game Pass for "free" for a year or 2 and they'll get people that resub because of it and it will keep consumers buying Microsoft PCs in the future when it comes with 2 years of GP for "free" and that will get people to use GP over Steam. Being a loss leader in the console market has not worked, they are merely losing. They might as well try it in the PC field instead, especially right now when GPU prices are so fricked.

Consoles and PCs are getting homogenized enough anyway, throw a Steam Big Picture Mode type deal into their desktops for the Xboxgays and call it a day.

The thing is that right now kids and teens want to be streamers. They want to be like their favorite e-celebs on Youtube and Twitch so for that, they need an actual computer. They could have an entire generation of kids raised on Windows and GamePass if they sold cheap PCs, which might help maintain users that primarily play games on PC if Valve ever decides to release SteamOS to the masses.

It would be, but it would be the killer of the Xbox platform. The whole point of the Xbox is that it is Microsoft's vision of the future of the PC. A platform completely under their control, where only approved applications are allowed to function.

Their goal is to generate more revenue for shareholders.

Similarly Valve would never agree to a deal that took them from being in control of their own fate on open platforms, even if it meant they would get special treatment on a closed platform.
Because once you are dealing with a closed platform, you are at the mercy of the platform holder.

                >Will come the time where Microsoft decides to take over it's own platform
Valve isn't simply scared of that prospect. Microsoft flat out told Valve it was their vision for the future all the way back in 2012, and Valve demoed Steam for Linux the next week.
Maybe Microsoft delayed their evil plan, or maybe it is a rare instance of a Microsoft employee being cool and giving early notice with enough time to actually prepare an alternative.
If Microsoft went walled garden now, Valve would take a hit to be sure, but they would probably be fine long term.

The users they would lose, would be the ones who don't spend any money on Steam, or who spend very little money on the platform.

The issue for Microsoft is that they want a Windows platform that looks more like an Xbox, a closed platform that requires monthly subscription fees, and not an Xbox that looks more like Windows able to run anything the user wants without generating revenue for Microsoft.

Valve may seem big within the PC gaming bubble, but compared to Microsoft they are aimed at a small 'enthusiast' sliver of the market. That market is sustainable for a private company like Valve, but can't support what Microsoft needs to produce for their public shareholders.
Microsoft's options really are go big or go home, and historically companies have 'gone home' to their enterprise customers more than they've managed to consolidate control over the consumer market.

Not only is he incompetent, he keeps saying the quiet part out loud and embarrassing Xbox. If you have Xbox fatigue he's like god's gift because he's accelerating their decline.

We've already seen what the future of gaming is, eventually everything will be on PC or PC hardware. Nintendo will probably be the last gaming company to detach themselves from hardware, but in 10 years it simply won't make sense to manufacture the hardware when there will be a dozen other companies putting out handheld gaming PCs that exceed the hardware specifications Nintendo needs while costing less.

Having said that, Microsoft is going to be the first one to exit hardware. Their exclusives are shit, and not even the kind of mindless cinematic blockbuster shit that Sony shovels out, just plain shit that doesn't connect with anyone. All their games are on PC, and third parties are quickly recognizing that they make more money selling their games on Steam than they do renting them on Game Pass.

I'd guess that Sony will exit before Microsoft simply because barring some major shift in the industry Microsoft uniquely has the ability to cripple PC gaming to benefit themselves, something they have done a number of times. When push comes to shove Microsoft will choose to try to push their OEMs out, and lock their platforms down to prevent third-party hardware and third-party software.

Seeing as how little the Steam Deck some compared to the Switch, Nintendo isn’t going anywhere. Only the consoles that Maskerade as PCs will get absorbed

          Anonymous

You say that now but Steam Deck is a first generation hardware, and it's rapidly growing. It does not fall into the same niche as the Switch because it's bigger and more expensive and not as kid-friendly, but if it keeps having steady growth I could easily see a time where a Nintendo platform feels redundant in a market where there are cheap handheld PCs that let you have a forever library that never needs to be re-purchased.

There's already a handheld PC that's about the size of the Switch Lite but it costs twice as much and it has shitty battery life. Again though, the technology is evolving and eventually, those problems will be resolved and the chipsets will keep getting more impressive.

Eventually the hardware frontier is going to be less and less relevant to Nintendo. The place where they will always have limitless potential will be their game development and brands, and if/when the time comes where manufacturing their own consoles no longer makes sense, I expect they will adapt. Even for valve I don't expect that they will be in the hardware game forever because they have always wanted other companies to make the hardware for them when the market allows it.

            Anonymous

I don't think Nintendo or Valve will get out of the hardware market any time soon because there is a value in having a device fully under their control, they may just start supporting more devices. Although if you look at the way Nintendo use to make their hardware compared to the Switch arguably they've already essentially farmed out a lot of the parts they don't really care about to Nvidia. Kind of like how Valve and AMD are sharing responsibility for the Deck in a way more typically seen in 'consoles' even if the Deck is a PC.

If anything the ease of getting semi-custom chips made I think is going to lead to a market more like the 1980s where IBM PC compatibles were not yet dominant and the computer market was a lot more diverse and siloed than has been more recently.

I bet you after the switch 2 they're just gonna do some metaquest shit and give us some VR hardware in like the mid 2030s. It will basically be their Wii 2

            >There's already a handheld PC that's about the size of the Switch Lite but it costs twice as much

Companies just have to be patient. It's just like when flat screen plasma tvs first came out or even 4k tvs. Over time things will get cheaper You can find nice ass deals for 4k tvs now.

Instead of just making a handheld PC it will be easier to make a gameing dedicated tablet that can dock to tvs monitors.

It's just more simpler and safer to make gaming tablets. Not everyone wants to go up against nintendo in the "handheld" market. ( If microsoft drops out of the console race, then apple will take over with gaming iPad tablets apple arcade bullshit then it's pretty much joeover sony will try and throw there hat in but will get bulldozed)

It's gonna be fun to see the Steam Deck keep evolving but eventually I'm telling you It's just gonna turn into a damn tablet that you can attach controllers too.

        >there will be a dozen other companies putting out handheld gaming PCs

This is a boring solution but since mobile technology is quickly catching up to consoles and PCs. (IPhone can play re8 and 4reamke)

I can see everything just turning into a gameing tablet. Then all the companies can just copy switch, so you can dock it on your tv or on the go. The reason why it has to be a tablet is because more people and the mainstream will buy it. You have to remember nintendo still owns the handheld market technically. It's just safer to turn future consoles into tablets.
Because no one's going to want to completely go up against Nintendo.

Eventually steam will release an app And you can play all their game.
Then that's that. Gameing dies no more physical.

Nintendo will definitely be the last ones to hold off the digital only massacre in the future.

Why do they expect people to subscribe to gamepass when 95% of the games are woke shovelware? Literal "farming sims" (dating sims for autists) walking sims and visual novels that are all thinly veiled propaganda. The biggest game they've added in the last year was starfield, which turned out to be an absolute wreck. Until better games get added, with more of a focus on gameplay over pushing "the message," there's no reason for sane human beings or gamers to subscribe.

      >Until better games get added
For better games to get added they would need to actually produce better game. I'm not sure they are capable of that.

        Anonymous

I agree that the quality of their first party titles needs to improve, but that's not necessarily the only way to improve gamepass. They just need to add better third party games that are geared towards gamers, as opposed to pleasing the HR department. For example, why wasn't Boltgun added? That would have been perfect for gamepass. There are plenty of RPGs, shooters and strategy games that aren't being added because they're gameplay-focused and non-political.

That's a mistake in assuming ms has the good intention of following market trends.
They don't follow market trends, they're just arrogant and drunk on their commercial OS monopoly.
Every time ms has done shit like that, they're trying to DICTATE market trends, and they try to do it thru what control of the market space they have.

          Anonymous

Their issue is that they often try to copy emerging trends to come out ahead on them. Like how Sony for some reason tries to copy Microsoft by making their own Netflix for games or how they made the PS Move against the Wii and now the PSPortal with the Switch. Microsoft sees Google or Apple have some success with tablets, phones, chromebooks, etc and wants to try to get a slice of that pie too and it never fails.

They do things like the mixed reality push on Windows 10 to try to dictate market trends but nothing ever comes from it because they constantly misread what consumers want. Or rather, consumers don't want what they're attempting to push so in that case you're right. But they totally trend chase Google and Apple when it comes to things not related to their OS.

  46. 7 months ago
    Anonymous

i mean its clear they bought activision/blizzard to get revenue avenue once they leave. it was never to save xbox as a console, xbox is never gonna catch up to ps5. so the brain move was to simply buy studios and have your fingers in the pie after they pull out from the hardware division (they will)

then life will go back to classic sony vs nintendo but this time nintendo is winning and ps5 can't compete with switch or switch 2 in ww appeal. once nintendo can run games at a half decent rate to get more 3rd party onboard its over for sony in the console space as well. they ran out of ip to really milk.

      Anonymous

Microsoft aren't going to be uninvolved in hardware, if they stop making consoles it's because they think other hardware eg. smart tv, PC, smartphones can make up the gap for game pass
      >ps5 can't compete with switch or switch 2 in ww appeal
PS5 has been beating Switch all year in worldwide sales. They're also not in competition, Switch game sales are dominated by first party IP that's been around for 30 to 40 years. Playstation has always been favoured for third party. The success of the PS5 has little bearing on how well a handheld Switch 2 does.

sony sells more in the west, nintendo sells more in japan. there isn't going to be a major shift when the switch can run other 3rd party games, the western world that is already on sony consoles will stick with sony consoles because that's where there games are. spending $70 to buy the same game but on the switch 2 is not an interesting prospect to your average consumer.

They're treating the Xbox as hardware people can buy just to directly access their services immediately without a PC and do not really care about spending massive amounts of money to push xbox console sales anymore. So until the day Xbox console sales drop to 0, they'll keep producing Xbox consoles just to stay in the industry making money off xbox gamepass and the 30% cut they get from game sales.

It's a ruse to appear weak just so they can get the purchase pushed through by saying they'll go out of business if they arent allowed to buy act-blizz. Now that they've bought them they're secure and will never face trouble ever again.

So that means that by 2027 or 2028 they'll completely get rid of Xbox as a gaming device or gaming brand? Damn, Sony and Nintendo will soar even higher at that point.

Big companies are always slow to react and out of touch, full of bureaucracy and inefficiencies. Microsoft is about as big as it gets, I don't think any amount of market research will help them understand gamers unless they release the N-BOX

Do you know what a blessing it would be if xbox just fricked off and died? Almost every shitty anti-consumer move started there, they bring 0 studios anyone gives a frick about to the table other than recent acquistions.

I don't think enough people see the dangers of apple entering the market. It's gonna be like getting a pet tiger walking around your home at night. Surly things will be fine

I personally think MS will be fine but worst case scenario what if apple kills off sony and MS and they pop the frick off?

the industry was already ruined, who cares? indie games are already way better than most AAA games.

            Anonymous

MS will be fine, it's just that they'll pull out of making boxes.

Apple for all their faults has shown tremendous restraint and they fully fund games for their apple arcade service, they also ban any mtx or gacha from them. They may bring in an age of quality games.

But you and most people don't seem to understand the nature of the question wasn't what we want to happen. It's what we think will happen. SEGA would be great but they're never ever coming back to hardware. Apple now has their own chip, their own rabid fanbase and even their own graphics backend. Apple is also big enough to make such a move.

They might well end it now. All consoles should just stop existing. They don't seem to want to produce cool games that the main video game market demographic would love. It's all just about pandering to boring people.

Why don't they just make some fricking games? Even Sony has their yearly movie game which usually sells decently. Microsoft literally makes nothing except Halos that flop horribly. The last Microsoft game with any hype was fricking Crackdown 3

      >Why don't they just make some fricking games?

Cause their way of thinking is buying every studio up like they're at an art gallery and saying hey, look at what I painted!

Phil is basically a frat boy at college. (A mellow one) but is still spoiled and uses daddy's credit card throwing as much money at every problem is possible.

And hey in the end it might just fricking work who knows.

          >buy
10 million players on game pass if they're lucky lol, starfield got a boost because it was on xbox and was an fps. tes6 would garner as much interest from the fps dudebros on xbox. plus bethesda's reputation is in the gutter after fo76 and starfield, so it's gonna be a tough sell. especially because it's going to be the redguard game and it's going to be heavily politicized one way or another. "chuds" are the core base for elder scrolls, if it's too pozzed they won't buy it until it's under $10 on steam with years worth of sex mods out.

maybe the modern console experience is just shit.

    Here's what I want:
    >COMPLETED games on a disk/cartridge that I can put into an OFFLINE console and play that way for the next few decades

    Here's what I get:
    >a gimped computer/surveillance device where I don't even own the games I download where 1 shitty game takes up a double digit percentage of the drive space

I have a Series S, my first console since the PS3, and I spend more time updating it and the games than I do playing anything. and I can fit what, 5 games on it? boomers are always right. things WERE better then and decline happens because of complacency and incompetence.
