The devolution of FromSoftware

Why doesn't it feel "like an adventure" anymore?

People like to blame Tanimura but if you remember DS2 DLC, it was possibly some of the most "adventure"-like and King's Field (or even Zelda)-inspired design in the series.

What happened?

The DLC does feel like an adventure, the problem is that it doesn't mesh well with the base game and feels like it should have been a spinoff or outright sequel instead.

dlc is fine for adventuring, I like that every time I look over a cliff I wonder how to get down/over there. the compact world helps keep that drive going.

    gameplay on the otherhand...

      >I like that every time I look over a cliff I wonder how to get down/over there.
But there's zero problem-solving involved. It's not "how can I get there? maybe if I try x...", it's just, follow unrelated path and it'll just lead there eventually through some underground tunnel or whatever.

Because youve played half a dozen games and youve done basically everything this genre can even do at this point and not even cute feet can keep this shit going much longer.

      >giant ancient ruins with platforms that can be moved to open different paths, and haunted enemies that have to be dealt environmentally rather than via direct combat, giant vertical pyramid you have to descend to fight a sorceress that conjures up illusions
      >frozen city with gated paths that you have to revisit a second time after finding a way to remove the obstacles, blizzard fog that reduce visibility, freeing prisoners and turning them into allies for the final battle
      >multifloor vertical tower where you unlock new paths on different floors in different order and how thoroughly you've explored the dungeon directly affect the boss' powerlevel
I'm even forgetting more concepts and how is that a lie when all of this is simply factual, regardless of whatever quality you assign to the game itself, moron?

        Anonymous

It's a lie because you're posting the "concepts" instead of the actual levels. They were fricking trash that was barely better than the base game. You can make that shit sound as good as you want, but that doesn't change what actually came out.
You can make Dark Souls 3s hallways sound like a fricking masterpiece by posting the "concepts."

Don't know why people keep hating on elden ring's dungeon design
The legacy dungeons in the dlc are amazing and even the base game has some of fromsoftware's best dungeons like Elphael

I think the issue is that Elden Ring isn't very good at open world. It's significantly worse than other open worlds like Genshin or even RDR2. They should've stuck to linear levels because they were actually pretty ok on that front.

Question: what is the Anor Londo archers equivalent in ER?

Albinauric archers in the gaol town in snowfield

Answering to "what is archers" with "uh.. these literal archers??" proves: 1. you don't understand the (essence of the) question 2. how creatively bankrupt ER is.

Adding to this: if you had half a brain, you could have answered, the invisible enemies in that very same gaol town, where you need to find a torch to see them. That's the interesting "adventure" part of that town.

We're having a different conversation. You don't understand the question and I won't bother explaining it further because it should be self-evident enough for anyone who understands the point of this thread.

They made the shadow map into some sort of moronic maze where the answer is to find a small hole in a hedge which leads to a tunnel to the other side.

The point of the DLC is to secretly turn you into a homosexual. They trojan horse it so you think you're playing a video game until you get heart broken by Miquella and are forced to be a gay sex slave.

Because it's Tanimura. His works speak for themselves.

People blame Tanimura for DS2 base game design as if he oversaw the whole thing when he came in late to salvage what he could, he never received a fair assessment. And all his subsequent credits were co-directed alongside Miyazaki, where everyone just automatically assumes the good stuff is Miyazaki and the shit stuff is Tanimura because we can never admit Miyazaki might be at fault. The DS2 DLC is the closest thing we have to a "Tanimura's vision" and it's completely different from DS3 and ER.

Every project without Tanimura on it is good. Every product with shit Tanimura on it is shit. The law of averages prevails.

It's the opposite. The map is actually fricking cool with how mazelike it can get in some sections like the whole ruins of rauh part. What I don't like is the bosses. God damn I dont want to fight any of them so I just summon to be done with them asap. The only map I dont like so far is the shadow tower with an obligatory gauntlet where you have to run to not die.

It's the first one of their games that felt like an actual adventure since Bloodborne. ER base open world has a lot of issues but they are rectified decently in the DLC.
If you want that DS1 magic it will never happen again. Not from Miyazaki or any other dev.

IMO it's just the 'open-air' formula, From peaked with the run of bloodborne, DS3 and sekiro, those games are literally just the same formula but they each style it in their own unique way, they tried something different with the open world but it just doesn't mesh with this type of game, just make more deliberate, smaller areas that have more attention and care put into them instead of huge generic grass field before huge generic castle into huge generic field into blah blah blah
