The future of Mario RPGs

Realistically, where do we go from here?
I think the only thing set in stone is Mario & Luigi being dead, since I don't see Nintendo deciding to revive the series on their own without Alphadream. As for Paper Mario, will they keep forcing the new formula with Sticker Star 4? I think Stockholm syndrome is starting to set in with people defending the latest abomination, so they wouldn't even be wrong keeping it up at this point. But the real wildcard is the SMRPG remake. It seems inevitable that will be well received, so is it possible that it will get a follow up (let's ignore that Paper Mario and SSS were supposed to be the unofficial sequels)? Or even influence the current state of PM? To make things even more confused it seems obvious at this point that the Mario Mandate is no more (if it even existed in the first place). So all the limitation that castrated the RPGs are gone.

Mario RPGs are some of the few that require actual skills. Wanna compare M&L, where if you can't dodge you die in 2 hits, to the standard attack/attack/attack/attack/heal FF gameplay loop?

"normal" RPGs fricking suck. We still haven't gotten anything with the pacing of Superstar saga where
      -enemies die very quickly
      -YOU die very quickly
-bosses are either killed in 5 minutes or less, or you die
-there's actually a good deal of freedom
-super moves actually take skill to execute, aren't just some resource dump
-super moves also don't take absurdly long to pull off, looking at you Partners in time and Dream team

Trannabe is going to continue fricking over Paper Mario. Don't mistake the SMRPG as a sign of things to come. This contrarian does whatever he fricking wants, and he isn't going to be joining in on the festivities. Hell, he is more likely to double down than admit he was ever wrong.

like its so basic but its miles ahead of whatever the frick rubberman in the actual game is. a fricking straw doll but with rubber bands? I don't know. I'm so fricking tired I don't even want an RPG anymore I just want a game that looks like it has any actual effort put in instead of looking like a asset store shitpost hobbled together in an hour

Not really. Just Paper Mario, and maybe a couple of tiny games like Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash.
Most notably, he has produced all the Retro games, and the moment they asked for more freedom and cut ties with Tanabe, they entered a decade long slump with jackshit being made. Coincidence?

You forgot Fire Emblem which put Waifu mechanics above all and can only make games with passible gameplay or passable stories, not both. Or Advance Wars, which died because he couldn't add waifu mechanics and had to have it's remake shopped out to fricking wayforward.

Super Mario RPG will do well and convince Nintendo to make or commission more original Mario RPGs. I don't think they'll go back to the Mario & Luigi name though, they'll be called something else, maybe even Super Mario RPG 2 and so on if they keep collaborating with Square Enix.

Paper Mario finally excises the pointless remaining RPG elements like turn-based battles and becomes full-on action adventure with a focus on exploration and puzzles.

There are a few issues you aren't considering
    >The mario mandate exists only in Tanabe's head
    >Tanabe is the director of PM
    >Tanabe is an idiot
There will never be a good PM game again unless Shiggy himself comes up to Tanabe in the lunchroom and kicks him in the balls. Best case scenario is they give Mario RPGs to another company.

Imagine if the game was just called Mario Story outside of Japan too. We would have avoided this entire Paper homosexualry that snowballed into a catastrophic abomination that killed the series. Such a tiny decision doomed everything. I'd go back in time to kill the NoA homosexual localizer who had this bright idea.

With how great TTYD was, it was the beginning of the end when that chest made jokes about Mario being like paper. The homosexual devs thought that was pretty funny and kept doubling down on the joke with each new release. Meme tier humor truly ruins things.

Localisation should be fricking gutted. Devs need to start hiring bi linguals with knowledge of both cultures to oversee translation to stop localisation teams from poisoning the well

I wanna say it started with Kirby's Epic Yarn, and the choice to go all in on paper. Nintendo's papercraft games are mere shells of the games they're based on.

Crafted World was a modern take on Story. You can argue that it was a bad idea to begin with, but there was no point in making another Island clone after WW.

Extremely minor stuff. It's the title that shifted the focus later on. Of course if it was called Mario fricking STORY, nobody would have thought "It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?".

The one you're thinking of is called New Paper Mario, I think it was abandoned but it makes for a pretty good preview of what a official remake of 64 would look like since it removes any originality from the original game, one example of this is anachronistically turning the Star kids into Lumas.
