I'm confident if the original directors from Dragonage orgins created DA2, they would've done a much better job in showing how fricked up Kirkwall was. Hell, I even think with dragnage veilguard the current writers don't want to go down the darkpath, so they'll make it as light and brightful as possible. "Show, dont tell" is an old problem in writing, sadly. But yes, it certainly would have helped to have a quest that for example had Hawke discover in shock that his entire city block, when looked at in birds eye view, resembled a giant ritual rune of blood magic

        Anonymous

DA2 was supposed to be just a spin-off rather than a full title, EA changed that and wanted them to make DA2 the sequel but didn't gave any extra dev times. They were given less than a year of dev times for DA2, the game was fricked from the very beginning. Most of the talents who worked on Origins probably got burned out working on DA2 at that point, so they left. Inquisition was supposed to be the true fully fledged sequel to Origins and was supposed to be developed alongside DA2. What could've been, eh?

I mean it depends on where you are getting the blood from. If you are slaughtering a dozen slaves to fuel your spell it’s pretty evil. If you are cutting your palm for a few drops of blood it’s okay

But that’s not how it happened. There is no maker. The fade and reality used to be the same. The veil is unnatural and not some divine edict against humans entering heaven. Go play the descent. There’s a bunch of stories of ancient dwarves discovering and fighting dark spawn. They think of them just as an annoyance that threatens trade on the deep road. They don’t become an existential threat until after dumat is corrupted. The dwarves also laugh at the whole chantry explanation and think dark spawn come from brood others and there is queen mother somewhere in the earth. TLDR dark spawn are creature in the earth but what makes them dangerous is when an arch demon takes control of the horde. The magisters clearly were infected with the plague and obviously have a connection to the old gods but we don’t know how they became dark spawn or even if they were the ones who corrupted the old gods or the other way around. It definitely wasn’t the maker punishing them and humanity though

Humans are literally larping Elven history because it's within their souls to do so. Andraste was a former host of Mythal, Shartan was probably Solas speaking to some poor slave from the Fade.

Is Flemeth supposed to be an elven god now? I thought she was an impossibly old mage of sorts.
I much prefer the idea of her representing the more wild and "barbaric" of magic the world as opposed to the tevinters.

She's the current incarnation of Mythal. That was always going to be the idea, though. Her grimoire back in DAO had Mythal's withered tree imagery on it.

I just assumed that Flemeth had fricked over more than her fair share of individuals, big and small, to become something beyond a mortal, not sure I like the idea of her always having been special like that.

Gaider spent like a whole year creating the DA setting before proper development on DAO truly began. Flemeth was always some kind of puppetmaster manipulating the world behind the scenes. Even in The Stolen Throne book, which released before DAO, it's implied she roped Maric into some kind of duplicitous deal for some reason.
And she's always been tied to dragons and the preservation of the setting's history, which relates to her teaching Morrigan about the Dark Ritual. Gaider put way more thought into things than you'd guess.

No that's what I mean, she's integral to Fereldan history but also making her the aspect of some such of an eleven god makes the setting feels small.

Yeah, fair enough. The setting is more complicated than that though.
Flemeth isn't a real, actual reincarnation of Mythal, just a piece of her soul that lives on. The overall implication seems to be that mortals imitate the souls that compose them, the same way that spirits imitate mortals in the Fade.
The mechanism hasn't really been explained yet, but I'm guessing it's a combination of the Evanuris manipulating mankind through the Old Gods and recycled souls playing out the same concepts they manifested in previous lives.

Eh, I do like that idea about somewhat possessive pieces of a soul changing people like demons do, still, Flem is much more interesting as someone that has achieved so much that she's above it all.
Ive always liked her charm when it came to talking down to people like the Warden.

                Anonymous

That's the other really interesting thing. Flemeth, whether due to Mythal's soul or not, really does seem to be above whatever happens, and have some kind of influence in guiding it.
Like Andraste, she's a "great unifier" or somesuch who seeks to return the world to a state of existential balance, which I think is what the Maker represents.
Flemeth seems to be the only character who has known what needs to be done from the very beginning, and has been guiding every major historical development in such a way that balance is restored.

Shit, she even comes to Sandal in his dreams and tells him the plot of DA4.
I'd imagine she predicted everything Solas was going to do and prepared for it. Although, I guess Morrigan will need to take her place now.

                Shit, that bodes terribly.

                Basically this.
Claudia Black has been a mainstay of Bioware games ever since DA:O. Mythal is central to the state of the setting, practically foundational.
I'm glad Solas is basically going to be our Johnny Silverhand, but he's just one part of the greater picture. Flemeth/Mythal is essentially more important than him in the grand scheme of things.

Not really he acknowledges it would frick over all elves by cutting them off from the fade and their knowledge stores but in his estimation consigning them to such a fate was better than the evanuris. He wasn’t trying to create paradise. It also appears he changed his mind as of trespasser. This is not great. They played this hand way too soon, unless we are going to be '' betrayed '' by Solas AGAIN no matter how much we build a connection with him, which would just be lame. They should have reveled in his villain-y for much longer, and I don't want them to make him even more supposedly sympathetic.

I was expecting some sort of cooperation at some point in the game with Solas, but I expected something way further into the game, not literally in the first section of the story. I can only hope a massive Fen'Harel boss fight will still take place (with Lost Elf playing in the background).

I like the idea, but I'm hoping it won't last for the entire game. I'd hope that, unlike Johnny, Solas will eventually stop being a voice in our head and reenter the waking world somehow.
                >I was expecting some sort of cooperation at some point in the game with Solas
That would be based, and I hope it happens. But Bioware still needs to pander to all the rabid stans who want to kill him for whatever reason.
                >Fen'Harel boss fight will still take place (with Lost Elf playing in the background)

The Veil mutes everything. No magic will ever be as strong as he knew it to be.
And, it's understood that Tevinter ripped everything they know from the bones of Elven civilization. They've only ever just been a simple imitation of greatness.
Even their gods were just fixations on sleeping proxies the Evanuris created, but that hasn't quite been confirmed explicitly, yet.

Elven propaganda. In thousands of years, the greatest human nation of mages without a doubt will have had some arcane inventions of their own.

That makes sense in theory, but the Veil changes it all.
Pre-Veil, magics was as simple as breathing to the Elves.
              >the greatest human nation of mages without a doubt will have had some arcane inventions of their own.
Naturally, they should. But their gods were wisps of what the Elves once were. They were even taught Blood Magic by whispers from the Evanuris.
Just refer to the party banter between Dorian and Solas. There's a lot they share, but Dorian is ultimately forced to realized that everything he knows was stolen from Elves.

Sure, according to nu-Bioware's writing team.
They'll do whatever gay shit they want with abandon because the standard has fallen that far.
Gaider left the franchise 10 years ago, and, somehow, he was the gay glue holding the whole thing together.
It was always his setting, after all. Weekes is a good writer in certain contexts, but DA isn't his.
Really, don't build your expectations up for Tevinter to be vindicated in this game. They're absolutely going to be a strawman stand-in for modern politics. They literally created a new rebel Tevinter faction that exists to be Tevinter but "good".

                >What do you assume would have happened had we visited Tevinter during the old Bioware times?
We never would have and never did because Tevinter wasn't relevant to the stories that old-Bioware decided to tell, and that was purposeful.
Tevinter has always been important lorewise, and DAI/Trespasser only made that truer. We've seen glimpses of Teviner culture through Dorian, Calpurnia, the Venatori, and different codices, but the way it's being portrayed in Veilguard is absolutely a dickless copout.
You talk as if video games haven't changed in the 10 years since Inquisition released, so don't call me the dishonest one. Pretending that Veilguard is a natural 1:1 procedure from a game released in 2009 or even 2014 is just spineless lie.

The final scene of DAI is literally the inquisitor announcing they are going to tevinter to get the archons help fricking Solas up. This is right after you disband the inquisition and tell the southern nations you are done with them

Yeah, Trespasser was always pointing to Tevinter. That was always the plan.
I'm saying that no previous DA game portrayed Tevinter to any great tangible effect because it was never important plot-wise. What are you saying?

DAO DA2 and DAI all came out in a span of 5 years. The old BioWare that made DA was definitely intending to explore tevinter. The andromeda and anthem disasters just derailed the whole thing

Yeah, I agree with that. That's just the truth.
What I'm saying is that the Tevinter we're going to get is absolutely not the Tevinter that old-Bioware would have given us because of the amount of time that's passed.
I'm not even sure we're really disagreeing. I'm just saying that I wish we were getting 2009 Bioware's vision of Tevinter and not whatever Veilguard's is, because this one seems devoid of all the inhuman ugliness that made Tevinter interesting in the first place.

                Anonymous

Not totally disagreeing. I don’t think old BioWare intended that tevinter was a total hellscape of inhuman ugliness though. Everything we heard about tevinter was basically propaganda from societies that hated and feared them. Dragon age has always been pretty good about showing how the good guys also fall victim to their own preconceptions and how forces for good like andrastian religion are also riddled with inconsistencies and even outright lies. I’m sure we would get to tevinter and see yeah it’s got slavery and a lot of corruption and decadence but also regular ass people trying to survive blights and qunari attacks and pissed off that arrogant southerners blame everything on mages

                >Everything we heard about tevinter was basically propaganda from societies that hated and feared them.
I would agree, but we do know that Tevinter was so bad that Dorian chose to flee it, at least during the DAI base game. I guess you could say that was mostly because of his father, though. But whatever the case, it's supposed to be objectively a worse, more oppressive place than Ferelden or Orlais, or anywhere else that we've explored to this point.
                >regular ass people
Who would that be in Tevinter, though? Anyone who isn't a mage is considered to be garbage, and the rest are slaves.
The most interesting thing about Tevinter is that it's implied to be a modern reflection of Elvhen society, where magic is the coin of the realm and anyone without a proper command of it is Vallaslin-fodder. And this is either because of the influence of the Old Gods, or for some other similar reason.
Guess I just want to see the setting be presented properly is all.

It’s a case with grass is greener with Dorian. He grew up in tevinter and resents all its flaws because it’s so close to home. Despite that he spends the entire game shit talking the primitive cultures around him and goes back to tevinter to reform it so obviously he loves it and thinks it’s a valuable enough culture to change. We hardly know anything about normies in Tevinter but the vast majority of people aren’t mages and tevinter cities are the largest in the world so they have to have some sort of functional society

I hope that's all the case. Thedas has been a legitimate setting under Gaider, and I'm fully expecting it all to be disregarded in Veilguard for the sake of mass appeal. I'm expecting the worse, but I hope I'm wrong.

It would make sense for individuals and small bands to exist but not whole factions. Slavery in the Imperium is how things always have been and as far as they are concerned how they always will be. Fenris even says that every time there is a revolt everyone "unites in the face of sedition". Plus they are stuck in a forever war with the Qunari and all their neighbors are at best hostile because of religious differences so there is no time to think about anything other than defense.

The Veil mutes everything. No magic will ever be as strong as he knew it to be.
And, it's understood that Tevinter ripped everything they know from the bones of Elven civilization. They've only ever just been a simple imitation of greatness.
Even their gods were just fixations on sleeping proxies the Evanuris created, but that hasn't quite been confirmed explicitly, yet.

maybe even if solas is right, and the magic is weaker now, tevinter mages are cool enough that even with weaker magic they can do that much? imagine what they'd do if magic was at full power

                Anonymous

Again though, it's reiterated throughout the lore that Tevinter was "built on the bones of Elven civilization" or something like that. And early Tevinter was absolutely guided by the Old Gods, which are just extensions of the sleeping Evanuris.
Tevinter is as close to Elvhenan as a post-Veil society can be, but it's still blinded by the Veil.

Tevinter wanted to claim they destroyed the elves but it’s not true. Also the old gods are not evanuris, they are literally dragons. Half the old gods are dead too and solas tells us the Evanuris are still alive

                >Also the old gods are not evanuris, they are literally dragons
The Old Gods aren't *literally* the Evanuris, but they're pieces of them. The longstanding theory is that the Evanuris imparted pieces of their souls in the Old Gods, the same way that Corypheus invested a piece of his soul into the Red Lyrium dragon to achieve immortality.
Solas says that the relationship between Corypheus and his dragon is an imitation of something "truly great", which probably means that the Evanuris achieved something greater with the Old Gods.

Flying Tevinter shit makes no sense, lorewise. Solas said that was strictly the domain of the Elvhen and all fell apart after the Veil.
Our base this time is in some pocket dimension in the Fade or something.

I like how Dragon Age has always tried to portray the issues around magic/mages in a nuanced fashion without fulling supporting or condemning any one side of the debate but everyone still pretends it treats the mages like dindus even though not even Inquisition, the most “woke” entry so far, sunk to that level. Much like how everyone acts as if the game wants you to think Anders is perfectly right and justified even though that’s very clearly not the point and you’d have to actively ignore the majority of associated dialogue to get that impression

I still don't understand why instead of having DA2 be an expansion of Origins, a side story like Awakening, they decided to make it the sequel, narrow it down to one city and 5 combat maps, and retcon a bunch of stuff that didn't need to be retconed.
Not to mention the faux-edge compared to the grittiness of origins.
I don't understand why Dragon Age is a franchise in the first place considering how tonally different Origins, 2 and Inquisition are from each other and how the narrative is completely unfocused from the original premise.

Don't forget Tevinter also has Templars, they just answer to the mages and more a police force for the lower class mages. How about that city they had that is just a giant ritual circle where they literally just abused and tormented people enmass as an experiment to thin the Veil which to this day allows demons to more easily posses and terrorize people.

The original ideal of the circle is what needs to be reintroduced, a place where mages can not only be protected from each other should the worse happen but also from the ignorant masses who want to have someone to blame for their woes. Unfortunately that would take nuance and writers who aren't just trying to make shitty real life commentary about oppression.

The last '' reset '' they did was cutting off all the live service elements. Unironically, yes.
                >Where the Maker has turned his face away is a Void in all things.
                >A hunger. A cage. A yawning Void.
The Void (The Black City) is basically a place devoid of God's love. The ancient Elves called it a "place of nothing". It's the antithesis to the creation that the Maker begets.

I thought the Chantry believed the city was where he was and it's vacant due to the transgressions of Tevinter magisters. Maybe the area around it is hell but I always got the impression they viewed it as a potential heaven

They believe it was heaven and then turned to hell due to the transgressions of the magisters, that their footsteps literally blackened it. Then that the maker got mad, turned them into dark spawn, and bailed on Thedas

                Anonymous

That's how the Chantry knows it, but they're piecing together a story a few thousand years after the fact.
Human history, and by extension the beliefs of the Chantry, is a muddled misremembrance of the Elves' downfall.
The area around it is "The Void" or "The Abyss" depending on which text you're reading, but the Black City itself is a true perversion of nature and the balance of the universe itself, most likely the Void or absence left by the death of the Titan at the center of the earth.

He's not dead, he's "left". I'd go way too far into loregayging to explain, but the Maker isn't a being, he represents the natural order of the world and the creation that it begets, before the Evanuris subjugated the Titans and literally corrupted creation itself.

I wonder if the titans were who the elves were fighting in the war that made the evanuris. Or maybe it was the old gods

That's always been the popular theory. It was definitely not the Old Gods, though. Elves and the Evanuris are of the Fade, like the dragons of old were. It's most likely that the Evanuris created Red Lyrium (and by extension the Blight) by creating their Orbs from the Titans' hearts, as in

It was the evanuris fighting the Titans. Mythal killed one and they mined their corpses for Lyrium which propelled their ascension

No the blight comes from a queen broodmother somewhere deep in the earth

That's what I was referencing. The "Queen Broodmother" is probably the first Titan ever corrupted when the Evanuris killed it, and maybe the actual "Queen" or Mother of them all. There's supposed to be a Queen dragon, after all, and there's opposition in all things.

unless the seperation is what's causing the blight and when the barrier is lifted, the black city will be cleansed?

Solas created the Veil to stop the Evanuris from destroying the world in the first place, so I think the Blight predates that, but obviously it didn't make anything better. Definitely put the Titans to sleep. It contained the Blight for a while, until the Evanuris whispered to men through the Old Gods.

And the Chantry says he'll return once the Chant is sung from all "four" corners of the earth.
Cole knows everything. Listen to his banter and he basically explains the fabric of the universe.
At one point, all things "sang the same". Red Lyrium has an "angry" song, and it's different from regular Lyrium. Discordant.
Andraste was said to sing all throughout her campaign against Tevinter.
Once everything sings in harmony again, the Maker will return, and creation will begin again.

Well, the Andrastians are right in the sense that the Black City represents the world's unmaking.
They don't get every detail right, but they understand the ultimate effect. The Black City is the seat of the Blight, and once it's opened the world will be doomed.

Broodmothers are female ghouls. Human-hurlocks, elf-shrieks, dwarf-genlocks and qunari-ogres. For the last part they had to make a story where some qunati made a colony somewhere in the korcari wilds and the darkspawn killed them and snatched some females. Btw that also makes recrauting female wardens a moronic idea or at least sending them to the calling instead of killing them/having them kill themselves when they start deteriorating.

A lot about the grey wardens is moronic. They were literally some worn out soldiers who accidentally stumbled on a way to kill archdemons and the credibility they got from that has allowed them to persist despite having self destructive customs

I mean we always knew we were going to go there. It's been a key part of the lore since the beginning and it's everywhere in the fade and with a game about destroying the fade, it'll show up. It's the classic case of the reapers in mass effect where the mystery is more exciting than the reality but it could be done well.

It has already happened with troony character creation and being able to disclose your troony status in some dialogue options (which has been confirmed). How did we come to this? You can't even choose your sexuality, which most people would probably rather have so they won't end up accidentally flirting with the same or opposite sex.

Not all mages are crazy monsters and it's stupid to pretend that they are. But the story's themes are completely at odds with itself because of the rushed ending. They mechanically needed enemies and another boss fight so they just made every dumb-ass mage immediately turn into a demon regardless of how little sense it made.

Jowan was considered a poor excuse for a mage who turned to blood magic out of desperation, but it's not like using it is like flipping a switch that just exists to turn you into an abomination in two seconds flat.
