Many levels feel convoluted for the sake of having a maze. There is no Romero's genius in level design. Not a bad game, but not great either. It is OK. Quake 1 is superior.
I played this not long ago. Shocked to realize I wasn't really having any fun. I don't think it's because classic Dooms are bad games or anything, but they're just so simplistic. I even calibrated myself by playing Quake 1 afterwards, and I still had a blast with that.
That's mostly the space bases. When you get to Hell you finally get Arachnotrons, Mancubi, and more Cacos. The space stages are the weakest part since it often likes to put you in a hallway as you ping pong yourself from left and right walls dodging Baron/Hell Knight fire balls.
Aside from the HK spam, the lack of Archies and Revenants really hurt this game, but it's pretty great regardless. The Lost Levels especially are very good since they were designed with PC controls in mind.

Yeah, Doom64 is actually good
Doom 64 is the second best Classic Doom, behind Plutonia Experiment.
I remember you could remap every button to be everything.
Thanks for reminding me to do my annual DOOM 64 run, OP.

Explain this.
KEX Engine
No, this is.
Doom 2 RPG and Wolfenstein RPG are superior. If anyone has an old working Iphone/Ipod Touch/Ipad model, those two games are a must play

Doom 64 EX is still the best version.
That's fine and dandy, but what is the thinking man's Coom?
