The Wii was fricking garbage

Inexcusably underpowered hardware, no HDMI, awful online, casual pandering, and forced waggleshit in everything. 2006-2016 was undeniably the worst ever era to be a Nintendo fan. Felt like they had given up on making serious games and just wanted to pander to soccer moms.

Point is it should have been an HD-capable console, moron.

It's absolutely inexcusable that Nintendo were still selling a console that couldn't output in HD as their current-gen system as late as 2012.

It was one of those classic Iwata-era moronation moments where they convinced themselves "HD is just a fad, it won't catch on" and promptly got left behind in the dust.

Good thing it wasn't. It's still a somewhat viable option for 240p emulation of 8 and 16 bit machines to this day.

Why do you keep bringing up brown and bloom? You realize Nintendo is currently releasing games on hardware MORE powerful than the PS3 and 360, and none of them are brown and bloom, right? Its not as if running on a HD system means you HAVE to make games like that.

If Nintendo had released a serious 7th gen console rather than the Wii, they could have still made games like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3, except they'd be better because they'd have far superior graphics and no waggle. And on top of that they would have also got more 3rd party support.

        >Point is it should have been an HD-capable console, moron.
It wasn't intended to otherwise its price would have went up and you clearly don't understand Nintendo's obvious approach for why they make consoles as extremely shitty and overpriced (yet still cheap compared to the rest of the market) as they are. The next console will probably be as powerful as a base PS4. Sounds shitty for 2024 considering even the PS4 for its time was shit right? Well Nintendo can use that to their advantage as they realized pulling back on graphics actually can net them an even bigger payback as its a cheap investment with even bigger returns and their games look noticeable better and they can get away with it thanks to their demographic. Making the Wii HD capable would have been moronic as a business decision and ultimately brought them zero benefits and even minimal benefits to the actual playerbase and developers.

It's more that Sony, Microsoft, and the PC market were taking the R&D cost, while Nintendo was basically resting on its laurels hardware-wise and relying on good games to sell its consoles. That worked for the Wii, but less so for the Wii U and especially the Switch because the hardware is starting to hold the games back. The next console needs to at least be able to play Nintendo games at a consistent native 1080p and 60 FPS, and have a durable controller.

I'm a zoomer, but my parents didn't buy me a console besides the Wii for a long time, so I played a lot of Wii right from when I was 4 up until I was 12 or 13. When I was real young my favorite games were Epic Mickey, Wii Sports Resort, and Galaxy. When I got a bit older I got Twilight Princess and I was addicted to it for ages, and my friends told me about Brawl which I also used to play a ton. There were probably days in 2015-16 where I was playing either one of those for 5 hours a day, only stopping when my Mom called me up for supper or whatever. It was fun.

First time playing Wii Sports with my family who hated video games and saw them as a waste of time. I said before in another thread, but seeing them finally "getting it" meant a lot to me. The whole Wii/DS generation was good for me honestly.

As far as favorite games though I love the Trauma Center games, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, the Galaxy games, and No More Heroes. I also liked Elebits, Warioware, Excite Truck and Excitebots, Battalion Wars II, Skyward Sword (seriously), Red Steel 2, Rhythm Heaven Fever, Let's Tap (for trying), Zack and Wiki, Madworld and a myriad of other games too. I didn't go into the Wiiware games, but I do have all 5 of the Strongbad games, Bomberman Blast, Jett Rocket, Outlast, the Bit.Trip games, LostWinds, Fluidity and a ton of others that I really liked. Virtual Console was also fantastic on the thing even though it eventually turned into drip feeds toward the end.

Yep proves my point, the Wii was a fad which was eclipsed by its competitors by the end of the generation.

To have a truly accurate picture you also need to include Wii U sales. The Wii U was a direct continuation of the Wii-era philosophy (underpowered hardware, controller gimmicks, waggleshit, casual-pandering) and it was a colossal failure. Iwata bet everything on the idea he could turn soccer moms into long-term gamers, and it was a total failure. Only when they course-corrected with the Switch, targetting serious gamers once again, did Nintendo start to see a sustainable level of success.

Yeah and thanks to that there is literally no reason to own a home console now, other than the rare (anti-consumer) exclusivity deals locking games you like down to one platform. Since 2012 most relevant games got ported to pc, and you can emulate almost all Wii U/switch exclusives without losing gameplay functionality because of said standardization. Modern home consoles thus have no reason to exist. At least when the Wii came out, what it offered in terms of gameplay potential (even if gimmicky) justified its purchase compared to the overpriced PS3 that had no games, and Xbox 360 that also had nothing to offer except inferior versions of PC games especially shooters

I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan. N64 was my first console. Stayed loyal through the whole of the GameCube era. I even remember being hyped for the Revolution when it was announced.

I never felt so betrayed by a company as I did in E3 2008 when they opened up with some stupid b***h spazzing out on stage advertising Wii Music. It felt like Nintendo were saying "We don't want our old audience anymore, we want the grandmas and soccer moms."

          Anonymous

Wii Music's issue was how it was presented leading up to release and the confusion about what it was. That ridiculous E3 showing of it ruined it forever. It's not really a "game" so much as a tool/sandbox thing for people to play around and experiment with their own arrangements in. It wasn't the best, but for people somewhat interested in making different, weird, cool, or otherwise interesting musical arrangements with well known songs, this was pretty cool. It was more for the creative types I feel. Also the Pitch Perfect games and the music conductor game was really nice.

That said, this game really could have benefited from DLC which Nintendo made Wii games didn't do. Having more songs would have gone a long way. Especially since Guitar Hero, Rock Band and to a lesser extent DJ Hero were still huge at the time.

Moved into a house last year and the previous owners left their Wii so I hooked it up and it's so fricking good.
