There are different kinds of gatekeeping, some are good and some aren’t.

There are different kinds of gatekeeping, some are good and some aren’t.

If someone asks if you have any tips to get past a part that they find difficult and you just shit on them, you’re not “bravely keeping casuals from ruining the game”, you’re just a dick. If you want to be a duck then fine, but don’t act like you’re anything but. The person in this instance wants to overcome the challenges of the game, they don’t want the game to change to cater to them. The type of gatekeeping you should do is against people who DO want to change the game.

It’s the same as the difference between making fun of a fat guy who wants to “normalize obesity” compared to making fun of a fat guy who’s trying to lose weight.

Pic unrelated.

yes he is, because good gatekeeping is important if you want longevity to a thing without getting flooded by fricking secondaries or worse.

Pretty much, if a gate of skill or expectation of competence kept you out then it's not anybody's fault nor responsibility you didn't meet it.

        >it's not anybody's fault nor responsibility

Point to anything I said that implies it’s someone else’s fault or responsibility if someone is struggling with a part of a game.

    >someone that is looking for exploits or secrets to make the game easy is not a casual
Of course they are, some guy wanting to play with the drake sword or look up the easiest way to accomplish something is absolutely a casual and ruins communities, if they can't be bothered to figure things out by themselves or simply practice to get better is someone who is shit at games and possibly just moronic.
How is hanging out with the mentally disabled a good thing?

If you need to change my words to make an argument, why are you arguing to begin with?

        Anonymous

What tips can someone give you that you can't figure out yourself by simply playing the game, learning from your mistakes and getting better? Nothing.
So all that is left is things like how to get the Drake sword or other balance breaking things.

What does it matter to you if they spend the time to learn everything or not? You can say something as simple as “try playing defensively” or nothing at all if you want. Either way, you’re not keeping the game from changing by shutting in this person, which is the whole point of the OP post.

    >The person in this instance wants to overcome the challenges of the game
no they don't, they are a fricking casual who is asking people for an easy way out or the optimal strategy, not using their own brain or skills to try and figure out a solution, they just want to utilize the work someone else already did. Frick all casuals.

this thread is the reason why you should always gatekeep videogames and tell people to git gud and kys every time they ask for help

    >If someone asks if you have any tips to get past a part that they find difficult and you just shit on them, you’re not “bravely keeping casuals from ruining the game”
no, that's exactly what you're doing, and you should be applauded for it.
    >The person in this instance wants to overcome the challenges of the game
if they're asking for help they don't want to overcome the challenge, they want to bypass it.
    >It’s the same as the difference between making fun of a fat guy who wants to “normalize obesity” compared to making fun of a fat guy who’s trying to lose weight.
more like a fat guy who's trying his damnedest to find french fries that are healthy instead of just eating his fricking salad.

Imagine if “gatekeeping” in any other skill in the world was like video games:

    >someone tries to learn piano
    >“can someone tell me how to hold my hands so they don’t cramp up?”
    >“LOOOOL look at this CASUL!! Figure it out yourself homosexual!!”

Sound moronic? That’s because it is, and so are you if you do it. Go on, try out your mental gymnastics to explain how this is “totally different”

if you honestly need help in figuring out how to not frick up your own hands then you deserve to be laughed at, yes.

also even if your analogy was functional, the music industry is still flooded with talentless c**ts who can barely play their instruments. so yes, gatekeeping would absolutely be a good thing there as well.

        > also even if your analogy was functional

Thought you could sneak that one by, huh? You didn’t prove that it’s not functional in the least.

Ask how I know you’ve never learned to play an instrument.

Explain to me how the frick you are going to get a hand cramp on piano that's not either stretching your hand out to do some bullshit interval instead of rolling it, or playing for ages in a shit position and ignoring the strain on your hands like a moron. Because I figured out how to do it right while being literally disabled.

You’re right though, gaming skill is far less important, which is why it’s funny that you would hate keep it harder than musicians gatekeep their skill.

What about people who are good at the game and yet want to change it regardless?

I’ve beaten every dark souls, demon’s souls, sekiro and bloodborne (several times some of them) and I’m pretty good at them if I say so myself. Mostly because I’ve been playing action games all my life. And yet I 100% think most of them do need an easy and that if they got it it would be nothing but good.

The trick to not being gatekept is to realize the gate was never real, no matter how much some people want it to be.
