if you go ranger to any degree you get a bunch of stupid magic bloat filling your bar and almost no relevant fighting skills, all three subclasses don't fit his character
yet everyone calls him a ranger, he's supposed to be a ranger, but he does not thematically use bows or dextery. obviously you could just mix barb/ranger split in some degree, but the issue of ranger being a shitty fighter/druid caster hybrid still exists
ranger is a mix of a fighter and druid. its not an archer to the point the main ranger guy in the setting drizzt is a dual wielder in your face kinda of a guy.
the archer subkit is an archer
fighters with high dex are archers.
whats really fricked is that in bg1/2 ranger and paladins(a mix of a fighter cleric) gain there caster spells at like level 9 but you cast those spells as a level 1 druid/cleric not as a level 9 paladin/ranger so every spell that scales with level which is most is practically useless.
You go full fighter or fighter9/thief3 and he functions mostly like his default BG2 build. Improved Extra Attack is just too good, only the Extra Bonus Action comes close.
D&D rangers were all about copying Aragorn, and Minsc in particular liked to wade into melee dual-wielding. >but no Rage

just make like 3 guys with bows and grab xan to cast chaos. you will shit all over the game difficulty wise.
as for what to do to complete game the ingame journal practically tells you step by step what you need to do to beat the game. bg1 released far past the point of confusing old video games. if you didn't beat it chances are you just simply got bored which is understandable as the sequel is far more entertaining no matter what Ganker secondary's have to say. a lot of quest text is just uninteresting paragraphs vomited into your mouth and the main quest is just kill a bunch of bandits until its revealed by pure chance the guy who tried to kill you earlier was behind it all.
give bg2 an honest try you might like it far far far more.
I struggled (and I’ve played BG2 multiple times). I finally finished it a week or so ago and was enthralled. Just go in without any mods, don’t okay EE, and just accept that the interface/graphics are going to be outdated. It’ll grow on you.
Also, just take it easy, explore, and don’t stress being a completionist.
how far did you get? the opening is very rough until you have a full team with helmets (to avoid crits) and armor. once you do assemble a full team it's a lot more fun.
i'm only a couple of hours into BG3 but i'm not terribly impressed so far, a 4-man party feels too small.
Once upon a time there was a great community mod that made it so much better and also unified 1+2 into a near-seamless game.
Too bad it only works with the old GoG version, before the EE abomination came out.

Minsc isn't a character in NuDnD. He's just a vehicle for Boo. They essentially turned him into squirrelgirl from comic books.
