Not on steam. Go download the PC ports of the original trilogy, emulate CV, and THEN you will be ready for the games on steam. Just buy REmake and RE4.
REmake is a remix of RE1, like maverick hunter X is a remix of Mega Man X1. The difference is the REmake is magnum opus tier and MHX is kind of an asset flip. Capcom handles remakes very differently than most companies, they aren't the same games.
RE1 and REmake are two very different experiences and REmake also plays on the expectation that you did play the original, so that it can frick with you. Both games are worth playing and I suggest playing RE1 first because it's a lot easier and way more lenient compared to REmake.

Either never played the original or just moronic. Even in the very first room in the remake, it fricks with players that played the original.
In RE1, if you try opening the front door, a dog would jump scare and before the player closes it, but in the remake, the dog actually gets through and you have to fight it in the main hall. There are a bunch of cheeky shit they did to subvert expectations.

I'm sorry you're a zoomer who wasn't born when REmake released to fully appreciate it
Play RE4 as a stand-alone game, use the RE4HD project mod on the Steam version of the game. It's crazy fricking good and also stays faithful to the original visuals.
RE5 is only good with a friend, alone it's ok. And RE6 is straight out bad.
If you want to get into traditional RE, play either REmake (Resident Evil 1 on Steam), or the old Resident Evil 1 (not sure what is the best version of it right now, maybe emulate the PS1 version or play the DS version). Both are worth playing, and playing the old version then the new one is also a great choice to see the evolution. REmake is not just a reskin, it's a new game loosely based on the original, so don't think you'd be playing the same game twice whatsoever. After that you might wanna branch out to RE0 (in the line of REmake) or play RE2/3/CV (classic REs).
I haven't played more recent RE games so I won't comment on those.
The Wii version with a wiimote is fricking godlike, probably one of the best control schemes ever. This is also an acceptable way of playing RE4.
If he has one, this is the best option. If he doesn't own a Wii, which is likely, the PC options a very close second. I suppose the VR would be a distant third, and the numerous console ports the 'I have no other option' choice.
Play RE4 about 1/8th of the way through, then quit, then play RE1, then play 2 and 4. Then pick up RE5 and drop it halfway through. Then pick up RE4 and finish it, then on to RE7.
I'm in the same boat, 3 hours into the RE1 remake, apart from the tedious backtracking and the limited saves it's alright. How similar are 2 and 3 because this amount of backtracking and the limited saves is pretty annoying
>casual zoomer modes
I'm not the biggest fan of the limited saves but I'd rather deal with that than play in one of these modes. Honestly the worst thing in 1 is the movement speed, walking that slow to go to the other side of the mansion and having to sit through the door animation every time
Limited saves really is not that bad. I would keep a timer and just save once every 20 minutes and I finished the game with like 10 ribbons left over on Hardcore
>exploring a small area with intricacies that make you have to think about your inventory and plan out routes is bad
Go back to playing Ubisoft games anon.
Haven't touched any, I mostly play Team Ninja games. I don't mind the limited inventory space, it's mostly this

Don't play the fricking remake. I swear to God if you have the slightest amount of taste you absolutely CANNOT get through it because it's so bad and every fiber of your being is yelling at you to turn it off.
REmake 1 2 and 3 have many of the same issues even through a camera perspective and control evolution, because of a fundamental failure in design philosophy. They're way too slow, as in much slower than even the PS1 games, enemies are bullet sponges, gameplay is thrown to the wayside for atmosphere that doesn't work. Re1 is to REmake 1 what Doom is to Doom 3. Just play the original versions.
>You are in the original lmao
I know because RE1 is a tech demo. Being able to cleanse the entire mansion of all zombies is absolute baby mode and destroys all tension. There is zero risk management in the original game. Just accept you want an easier more casual and campy romp through a spook house and stop pushing your awful opinions as fact.
It literally is, cry baby. It is the absolute larval stage of what RE would later be. REmake is made by the same exact devs and is the result of their fully realized vision and accumulated experience.

This is wrong actually, the game had to be censored. That's why shotguns no longer guarantee one hit kill headshots, they couldn't have that many heads exploding in HD.

I know everyone knows to play RE games like this now
but if you actually played them in the '90s people just killed everything and if you find all the bullets you can still beat the game. I honestly never even learned to play an RE game in the "modern" dodge everything way until I watched shit on youtube in like 2010
I've already started it at this point, may as well finish it. I'll keep that in mind for 2 and 3 though
Limited saves really is not that bad. I would keep a timer and just save once every 20 minutes and I finished the game with like 10 ribbons left over on Hardcore
It's not enough to make me drop the game or anything, apart from that and the backtracking it's pretty decent
>tedious backtracking
Are you out of the mansion yet? The safe room on the West side is basically your base of operations. You generally want to get at least 2 key items before saving, don't bother picking up herbs unless you are on your way back and have free space or need immediate healing. If you don't know where your going keep keys on you and exhaust them asap so you can chuck them. And hopefully you aren't playing Chris on a first playthrough.
Not out of the mansion yet, and yeah that room is where I've been basing myself out of. I've just killed the dog to get the imitation key. >hopefully you aren't playing Chris on a first playthrough
I am, I didn't think I had any option, at the beginning when it gave me the character select option it was just two versions of Chris
>I am
Yeah, Chris is very rough, Jill is better when you are learning. It's fine, though, just keep going. When and if you do try Jill it will be like night and day though.
I did read that she has 2 extra slots which I'm sure would make things easier but at this point I'll just keep going
>I've just killed the dog to get the imitation key.
You are ankle deep at the moment. The mansion opens up quite a bit very soon.
My only issue with the remake as opposed to the original is that it is more restrictive in where you can go in the initial moments but it gets much less linear quickly.
I read it was quite a short game so I assumed that the whole game would be in the mansion. Yeah it felt extremely restrictive, I think I even managed to lock myself out of an item box at the beginning as well so I had to restart from an earlier save
>I did read that she has 2 extra slots which I'm sure would make things easier
A lot more than that. She doesn't use old keys and has a lock pick which doesn't use a slot and gets incendiary grenades to erase corpses without needing a lighter. Jill playthroughs are A LOT smoother.

I don't really think the RE games are very hard, the challenge is clearing them quickly in subsequent playthroughs, and Jill and Chris have wildly different routing obviously. I recommended Jill because her strength is that she has to backtrack far less, but Chris actually physically runs faster and is more likely to pop heads, so I think both runs actually even out to be about the same in the length. It's sort of interesting but a discussion that involves a lot of spoilerly stuff. But yeah, I suppose Chris is harder I guess.
>I've just killed the dog to get the imitation key.

Maybe play RE1 remasters, RE2 and 3 are too old, play RE2remake, decide for yourself on 3-make, it's eh. Maybe wait for RE4remake, your choice, but I suspect it'll lose the charm, so original is very good.
It's weird how Remake 1 is suddenly shit now or inferior to the original even though it received nonstop praise for decades.
It's easy to spot contrarian zoomers
I got the PC port from steam on sale because I'm too much of a brainlet to torrent. But I did manage to go through the steps to get the re4 hd fan project installed. It looks really good
I personally would start with the originals and work your way through up to 6, then go back and play the remakes then play 7 and 8, since the remakes are cannon now. Also prepare for burn out if you try playing all the RE games in like a week. Try spacing them out, especially the older ones because they are very slow to play and can be pretty confusing with puzzles running back and forth from room to room and inventory management. If you play Code Veronica play the PS3 version if you have it since they updated the graphics in like 2012 and looks so much better than the washed out grey color pallet in the original/2016 re-release on PS4
Play the DS version of RE1 as it has the Rebirth mode which is kino
Play RE4 any way you like it
Play RE2 normally then the remake, it's a very good one at that.
RE3 and 5 are optional
Always skip 6, just get to 7 and 8
How do I get into REmake
I get to the first zombie after the dining room, take damage because it's too hard a corner to turn, aim, and down the zombie before it bites me, then I quit because that was bullshit
Literally just run past like 90% of the zombies you encounter. Basically only kill them if they’re in the way since most of them just respawn when you get half way through the game. Also only kill them if you have the ammo for it, if you can’t spare the ammo do not bother. It’s also good to play on beginner mode to get a feel for how the game plays and where to go/where items are located if you’re having trouble with normal mode
You're supposed to play most franchises in chronological order, yes I'm a chronogay deal with it. Playing remakes without having played the originals ruins much of the fun. I would suggest the original PlayStation trilogy the get a taste of survival horror and action. If you really really don't like tank controls, RE4 is a great start, but it helps to know who Leon is as he appears first in RE2. Important characters like Jill, Chris, Leon, Claire, Wesker, appear in the original trilogy and they form the backbone of the later games. For me, the OG trilogy is the definite Resident Evil experience.
Also, download Duckstation for Playstation 1 and Dolphin for Gamecube emu and get ROMs on Vimm
Original trilogy:
Resident Evil 1 (1996) (original, not Director's cut)
Resident Evil 2 (1998) - don't forget Leon B/Claire B playthroughs
Resident Evil 3 (1999)
(There are PC ports of these, but I am not sure if they are worth it, Playstation is the integral experience IMO)
Gamecube/Dreamcast
Resident Evil Code Veronic (2000) (DreamCast)
or RE CV X on GameCube (updated extras n stuff)
Code Veronica has an HD version (2011) on the ps3/x360, but you will have to check if you want them or just emulate them.
Steam ports/remasters:
Resident Evil Remake (2002) (the famous GameCube remake ported to Steam)
Resident Evil 0/Zero (2002)
Resident Evil 4 (2005)
'Modern' era (on PC and consoles):
RE 5 (2009)
RE 6 (2012)
RE 7 (2017)
RE 8 / Village (2021)
Modern Remakes. I would play these after playing the originals.
Resident Evil 2 (2019) - Remake of the 1998 original
Resident Evil 3 (2020) - Remake of the 1999 original
Resident Evil 4 (2023) - Remake of the 2005 original
Why, you start with the Netflix adaption of course! This is the main villain of the series, Albert Wesker, delivering one of his classic lines from the games.

Not really, unless you care for the plot, which is somewhat better than any mainline games. You should definitely play Revelations 2 though
How does Rev2 not have online coop
it is a shame
but the coop in raid mode was ok
I never did either.
If you do end up touching 6, just play Leon's campaign and skip the rest, it's trash
The don't play the remakes shitposting has somehow made me not like the originals any more.

1,Remake,2,2make,3, 3make, CV, 4 with hd patch, 5, 6,7,8
