I've never played thief but I love a good campaign for ancient software so have a bump anon
Just promise to return the favor next time you see a thread about Perfect Dark native PC port or something
I don't play fan missions, I would rather replay the actual game again.
There are FMs that achieve the same impact, if not better. Regarding this one - it's been developed by an already known group of creators, some of them have successful releases on steam.
Particularly, OP has most enjoyed DirkBogan's fan missions. Usually they feature crazy mapping with a lot of verticality and a neat, but not overly insisting story.
Posting the cover art because it's kino, can't wait to play it when I'm free.
>it's been developed by an already known group of creators, some of them have successful releases on steam.
Huh, any links? Genuinely curious.
Skacky is the dev of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin
he left wrath not that far into development lmfao
>fingerless gloves
Archers never really wore full finger gloves. They used thumb rings grips gloves with three fingers etc etc etc it gives you better grip. Also why are you posting some cringe D&D shit ITS NOT CANON AND ITS NOT EVEN REAL STFU IT NEVER HAPPENED
are you okay?
what a moronic mindset. what prevents you playing both except your idiot sperg bias?
You're missing out, man. I would say the Thief community has created not only great thief missions, but if you're into first-person 3D climbing and exploration, some of the best big, open, interconnected levels in all of vidya history. Sometimes you get burned when an FM gets highly praised and you think it sucks or has bad writing and voice acting or whatever, but the peaks are super high.
>You're missing out, man
What are the best mods/maps I should play?
Heist Society is a good one to start with because it's a straightforward rob-the-big-mansion mission. It's an old one but it still looks good. It's kinda hard to recommend FMs because there are a bunch of different styles and everyone has a type they hate, like some people hate city missions, some people think that's the best shit ever. Me, I like tomb crawls that are like oldschool Dungeon & Dragons shit.
translation: I am a fricking ignorant moron. The fandom has created so much ludo. BUT BUT LE THEIF 1&2 ARE PERFECT. Frick no dude the games were rushed and it shows for a lot of maps.
i love the game as well, but if there's something that machine for pigs taught me, is never trust 3rd party writers
FMs are a tradition. There are FMs you can play that are older than Thief II.

Everyone, feel pity for this loser fool.
I don't even hate FM's, but this is how I am too. I tried some but couldn't get into them.
Just give this mod a chance
Ok.
why you go there
Good stuff OP
holy shit no fricking way. thanks for tipping me off, anon. I didn't have any hope it was going to come out this year and haven't been checking the TTLG forums. I am 100% positive I am going to love it. I'm going to take a couple days off work and give myself a long weekend for this one, that's how hyped I am. Also playing it in the dark during the cold months, bundled up inside with headphones, it's going to be peak atmosphere and immersion, I'm practically drooling over here. Fanboy status engaged, I'll admit it.
I thought you were tricking me but no

there's another thread but the whiny homosexuals are in that one
lmao
Post more Thief memes
Good shit.
>got this email yesterday it was the only birthday congratulations I got
>this today
I'm gonna try it, it's been so long since I've actually replayed Thief.
Happy late birthday Anon
Happy belated birthday gay I hope you have a good year
Someone give me the QRD on this. I just clicked in here because I liked the le medieval spooky image. Is this like a Morrowind + Dishonored game?
It's a mod for Thief The Dark Project, anon.
it's weird to think that LGS was so reticent to release the modding tools
I think it's weird that despite how many years the Thief community has been at it, the AI is not well-documented. There used to be a page showing the AI vision cones and how it works but I can't find it now. Modders seem to understand it but the knowledge seems more arcane than it is in other communities, probably because Thief isn't open-source, but still.
Thanks for the heads up, OP.
niiiiiice
the time has come and so have I
OH FRICK IT'S OUT
>a new protagonist
Dropped.
amateurs doing Garrett impressions is much worse
Has no one really used voice ai to make Garrett lines for a fan mission yet?
hes fricking flawless actually.
Holy frick that's incredible. The VA for black parade is quite good, no complaints. But this is revolutionary tech for one-off FMs with Garrett.
Hi Stephen
Yeah garrets voice is amazing for AI, same with Dianne from hitman.
God I didn't read the title properly and when I realized what the mission was I started laughing really hard. That's black
holy shit my sides
damn that's impressive, and it's only going to get better
That's a tempting proposal.
>Narrating:.. thankfully the guards aren't too bright
>Benny voice: Huh?!
I still have too many other FMs to go through and my backlog and a bunch of other shit and there's no time.
Where can I buy time?
Before every mission
>They didn't crowdfund to hire Stephen Russell as Garrett and/or Benny again
Don't care.
Is AI not up to the task? Might not be perfect but it's a godsend for modding games with voice acting.
>AIslop
Eat shit, homosexual.

ya gay
No one actually feels this way.
I do. A big part of why I like Thief are the memorable performances by the voice actors. It's not the sole reason I like it, but having none of that now feels like a big step down.
I guess I meant "no one who would be interested in FMs anyway" feels this way. But I suppose that means you simply aren't at all.
They got Dan Thron for something.
I dont think they legally can?
I don't know whether there is any legal element, but people have asked Stephen Russell about recording lines for FMs before and he politely declined.
I think it was their design, to create something that can stand on its own
Damn, that is impressive. Comfy gaming to ya
Thanks, yeah it's pretty cool. It might not be the most powerful handheld PC out there, but features like that put it above and beyond the competition for me.
The MC isn't Garrett you moron
Literally the first line in the synopsis
no fricking way, thought this day would never come.
I'm afraid to even start it up, the expectations are too large at this point
me too anon, me too. like I need the perfect evening to play it
whoa a horse
I wanna get into these games, is the steam edition good? Anything I should
Anything I should know?*
The +^%#^ is a b***h to get through
Steam version is just like release physical copy iirc. All you need is TFix for both games and you are ready to go.
There are some extra steps on pcgamingwiki that I would recommend doing like EAX support and higher refresh rates if you have such monitor.
Thanks anon
Does thief work on the deck?
Link OP...
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152429
https://www.thiefguild.com/fanmissions/26275/thief-the-black-parade
It does on Linux, but I'd imagine it's not gonna be a pleasant experience with a controller
Wrong. Played a fair number of fan missions on the Deck and it plays fine. There's numerous good community layouts that take like 5 minutes of getting used to before you're able to settle in for some comfy taffing.
Hmm. I don't own sdeck though. How you have enough keys? These ones I use constantly.
lockipick 1
lockpick 2
Lean forward
Lean left
Lean right
Creep aka lower speed
Sprint
Crouch
Item selection left
Item selection right
x8 (or is it 9?) Select weapon & arrows
Drop item
Use & aim
Hide weapon
Jump
Hide item
Map
Objective list (probably accessible through esc key?)
>lockpick 1 & 2
R5 and L5
>Lean forward
Click right thumbstick
>Lean left & right
L4 and R4
>creep, walk, sprint
All handled by enabling joystick mode
>Crouch
Click left thumbstick
>Item selection
Dpad left and right and left trackpad as an item wheel while holding down R1 for mode shift
>Select weapons
Left trackpad as a weapon wheel
>Put away item
Press B
>Drop item
Hold B
>Use & aim
R2
>Hide weapon
X
>Jump
A
>Map
Y
>Objectives

That's just the layout I cooked up myself, might be open for some fine tuning. Steam input is some cool shit
He prolly just has equipment on fake scroll wheel input + few in your list are redundant like player movement / speed when you have analog input on deck + weapons can be bound by function -> analog stick axis to make a fake weapon wheel (you just rotate the stick to get 1-9 key values).
This leaves you with 11 other keys to bound, meaning any standard controller when deck has paddles on its back.
You can push tapestries aside like curtains now when you get close to them
>it's actually fricking out
THIEF BROS WE ARE SO FRICKING BACK
not seeing a switch for this painting panel in cattermole manor
Screen?
I think this panel must open on this painting, the map says there is a lucrative score in this manor.
Don't think that's a panel. Protip: if you swing a weapon at something and it doesn't interrupt the animation and play a sound, you know it's plain geometry and not something movable.
I see, I thought I could see an edge to it but I guess not. Looks like I'm seeing things. Doesn't interrupt and make a sound either.
Holy frick that's impressive.
I've never touched a thief fan mission. What do)
it's settled then
Install thief gold gog, install tfix latest version, put .7z FM file into your FM folder. Run the thief.exe, now it should ask you what fan mission you wanna play, select 'the black parade', click start and you're set
Install TFix Lite because even the most vanilla TFix install changes some shit that according to some Thief 1 mappers fricks with the vision of their FMs. Skacky is one of those and he would crucify you if he saw you playing his shit with TFix.
I think TBP is configured to override most of Tfix's unwanted changes, but nonetheless it is probably best to at least disable all the optional components upon installation for good measure.
That's the thing. Even if you leave everything disabled TFix still messes with things to add stuff that weren't in the original games. Thief 1 purists will tell you you don't need anything other than NewDark and Tfix Lite is the moron proof way of going about that.
I know all about it, but a look in the mission archive shows they included duplicates of all the stock game assets which should override other mod assets. There might be edge cases, but that should avoid the worst issues.
What does it frick specifically? I only notice the enhancement pack and a view model change.
Nevermind, I found how fricked it is. Yeah it's pretty fricked all right. Get tfix lite
It makes a number of changes to the design of the original missions (minor, mostly intended to prevent going out of bounds but sometimes affect gameplay). The optional thief 2 textures are desaturated in order to work with T2's colored lights, which means they look like shit under T1's colorless lights and they aren't any higher quality. The enhancement pack fricks with object dimensions and causes things like utensils and plates clipping into tables. It disables the ability to mantle on objects, which is how it was in olddark, but it can ruin newer fms that were designed with that functionality in mind.
There's probably more, but part of the problem is that few of these changes are documented.
Is there any way to unfrick my thief install after tfix aka install tfixlite or newdark and remove full tfix?
Best to do a fresh install tbh. If you do Tfix Lite, make sure you update the paths in install.cfg or the game won't start. Plain newdark is a bit tricky because there are some settings in cam_ext.cfg that need to be changed to prevent stuttering but I don't recall them atm.
Heard gog ships with newdark or tfix lit. Is that enough or do I need to update it?
Gog uses tfix lite with newdark 1.26 which is compatible.
Thanks bro
For reference, though, here are instructions for how to install the latest version of plain newdark and configure it to play fan missions (with optional dromed setup for anyone so interested). Assumes a Steam copy of the game, but should work with other sources.

There is fricking so many to pick from I would not rec playing this first. Play something older work your way up the ludo scale.
here's a good video for people who are completely new to Thief FMs

Thanks. I'll go with what this one says, check out the top rated ones, and download the one in the OP as well.
>Mission count: 10
>Size: 1.58GB
Holy frick, when was the last time with something this big? Death's cold embrace in 2017?
DCE is gr8 (thanks for the reminder to replay when it snows) but since it reused maps so heavily, T2x is a closer comparison.
I actually downloaded it and set up tgold and angelloader and everything and fired it up.
Boy oh boy the character models look like ass. Why can't something be done about them after all these years. It is immersion breaking. I started playing thief missions again but only TDM missions.
So glad I'm completely unfazed by early 3D graphics
I like it, besides adding high poly models to an old game like this is just gonna look jarring
The authors are moronic and forced the low detail ones meant for people running the game in software mode. If you boot up the original game you will have better looking models from 1998 that don't have triangle feet and roblox hands.
The author of the mod, the french gay is also an antifa. Ugliness is part of their stuff.
it's dark outside, i'm buzzed, gonna shelve the latest nicked mission about a library to start this. it's been a long time coming but here it is: probable disappointment. we'll see, jaded middle age is a b***h you homosexual ass zoomers.
I'm a jaded frick myself and FMs like this are what keep my spirits up. I was bitter as hell a few years ago, but the TDP 20th anniversary contest dropped and I had a blissful weekend of mainlining the good stuff. Makes me feel like vidya is still good and there is fun stuff to play.
yeah i've had fun lately catching up. dark mod still has no truly great missions, iris doesn't qualify. this one has a horse, that's novel. no other game is as comfortable to boot up and play, that's for sure.
>Makes me feel like vidya is still good and there is fun stuff to play.
when the best shit to come out, year after year, is thief fan missions then you know video games aren't good at all.
>dark mod still has no truly great missions
Melan and Spoonman disagree.
Lady Leicester was fricking mind blowing
Haven't played that one. I think the last really good TDM mission i played was Perilous Refuge.
idk about you guys, but after taking a break from TDM, it seems like a recent update turned up the default sensitivity on guard hearing
It was always fricked. But it's a non issue since you can adjust both guards hearing and vision sensitivity. Sight I can tolerate but their hearing is way too good even on challenging.
>not owning an orphanage filled with your personal army of little thieves

I'm playing the first mission right now, it's been really nice so far, a lot of details and good atmosphere

the second mission looks nuts, GOTY confirmed
Maybe 2023 wasn't so bad for games after all.
>Faces of meth: before and after
ah damn
Why are you posting a version that only ants can see anon? And for that matter why the frick didn't you fix the white bits around the edges? Here's a better version, have some goddamn standards next time
I really need to play more FMs.
TDM issue is its hard to know whats great, whats good, and whats utter shit.
Regarding Fan Mission quality? Thiefguild.com has a rating system, which at the very least can help you filter the poorly made ones
issue is I find people more forgiving with it, where thief 1 and 2 FM are taken more seriously due to how long its been a thing.
I also think that it is probably much harder to design a tdm mission, since it requires making the mission look good, which IMO is a way more demanding task, than it would thief1+2. The engine is made to work with high res textures and more difficult geometry and anything less would make it look like a Minecraft with shaders.
Probably fan missions with the most... Nvm, scratch that. It is explained on their site
>controversy is calculated using standard deviation method. *more controversial* means more versatile/extreme ratings, while *less controversial* means more similar ratings
is calculated using standard deviation method. *more controversial* means more versatile/extreme ratings, while *less controversial* means more similar ratings
Oh, that's tame.
Kek some of these controversial rated fms
Idk, still less boring than mages towers for me
Good god I can smell the 2004 on that FM
You were close, the site says 2002
Yeah I was aiming for late 2001-2004 era, maybe 2006 at the very latest.
are those missiles from the rickenbacker in system shock 2? wtf am i looking at
FM name?
Osama Bites the Dust
https://www.thiefguild.com/fanmissions/1948/osama-bites-the-dust (NO download link)
https://thiefmissions.com/info.cgi?m=binladenhuntV2 (with DL)
I'm looking at the site now. What the hell is controversy rating?
not sure, nta, but maybe its either edgy or pure shit? I dont think TDM censors creators. Or it could be buggy as frick.
Lady Leister, painters wife and Iris are mega kino.
Penny Dreadful 2 is peak thiefkino and the best revenge mission since Assassins.
Holy shit, I had completely missed it. Thanks for the heads-up.
I wish I could enjoy this game
why cant you? Yeah Thief gold has some shit missions and weird design philosophy, but Thief 2 is pure kino. Even 3 isnt that bad, just a b***h to get working right. It also had the perfect send off if anyone attempted to make Thief 4, thank god that never happend.
I find Thief 1 increasingly better than Thief 2, it's literally just the added levels in Gold that suck fumes. The undead levels are still stealth levels - they're just a different type of stealth requiring a different approach
I cant really disagree, ive come to love thief 1 more and more, but 2 is just fricking amazing for pure Thiefing. 1 did mix it up more, and Constantine mansion is one of the best levels in the series, its better than the party one in 2.
Trail of Blood is the most kino level ever made though.
Spent like 4 fricking hours in that amazing mission.
>Trail of Blood is the most kino level ever made though.
For me it's my 2nd playthrough when I really decided to explore every area in that level thoroughly when this happened:
>What was that noise?
>Wait, what the frick? Did that tree just move?
>.......
>Must've been my imagination anywOHFRICKFRICKFRICKFRICKFRICKFRICKFRICKFRICK im dead
its a huge curveball for 2 since 2 lowers the supernatual/monster stuff A LOT from 1, but its so gorgeous, it felt less stealthy and more of a exploration+pacing refresher.
It's amazing that they made a whole enemy to be used only in one part of the game, that most people would miss entirely. I assume it was just a reskin of the SS2 rumbler but still.
the best part is, its only near the finale, well, at the finale.
I agree, that was the issue with HL1/Goldsrc maps/mods vs HL2/Source maps/mods, way more work to make the latter look good.
Yeah same, first time through I didn't even know Treebeasts existed.
>Trail of Blood is the most kino level ever made though.
I get goosebumps everytime this exchange plays out.
I didn't know about these things for the longest time and nearly had a conniption when I found out during my last replay
People missed them the first time through? I immediately saw them when I got near the end.
There's literally no obstacles or (seemingly) enemies in that last bit, you can literally bunnyhop your way right to the end of the mission in that last section.
Who runs through missions their first time without slowly exploring and looking around? I ran to an exit if I was being chased at the very end.
It really is only in the last section of that particular level. Like you can almost see the corpse from the moment you enter that area. It's very easy to stumble right into the mission end without meaning to there
Dude came right at me while I was there and I sprinted for the exit NOPEing the frick out.
Uh, I should replay 2 one of these days.
Not him but I've been going in the reverse direction, and honestly have warmed up more and more over time the Gold missions specifically. One thing I think some of The Dark Project's levels fall into is an overuse of symmetry. Like compare the layout of Cragscleft to the Bank. At least that's how my preference has drifted over the years. Doesn't stop The Sword and RttHC from being some of the GOATest levels in games.
>warming up to mages towers
its bugged out 4 times for me.
AI I think so, models/animation? Frick no. It just has more thief design vs thief 1 being a thief stealth game and a weird monster dungeon crawler(with stealth)
up to mages towers
>its bugged out 4 times for me.
Well that sucks. Are you running the current version of TFix? That's honestly never happened with any Thief OM before for me.
always, whats happened is each time, 1 tower I cant ever get the key or rune or whatever, bricking the map.
>models/animation? Frick no.
I'm like 99% sure the models are better in Thief 2.
maybe new ones but not the other ones.
To be honest I'm literally mostly referring to Thieves Guild which (for me at least) does literally everything wrong that classic Thief levels can do wrong. Plus, I dunno, Mage Towers is kinda boring (and it suffers from that symmetry problem you're talking about too.) Song of the Caverns is great though, no arguments about that here
Everyone agrees thieves guild is the worst of the worst. Its boring, its tedious, its ugly, and dogshit.
I've perhaps gone insane, but I've learned to kind of like Thieves Guild at least in terms of challenge (aside from like 1 guard in front of Rueban's house that I SWEAR TO GOD is placed in an uneven direction just to see you more easily). There still isn't any good writing, the color/aesthetics are trash, and the environments are just drab and empty, but it's not the worst experience in TG for me. That's Escape!
the lost city is the worst imo
shit is just too samey, and a slog
>if anyone attempted to make Thief 4, thank god that never happend.
What do you mean? The Dark Mod's great and even Dishonored's a pretty good spiritual successor
Thief 1 > Thief 2
hell
Shadows of the Metal Age > Thief 2
I won't elab further
>Shadows of the Metal Age > Thief 2
nah
T2X is awful and ugly.
posting in an epic thread
Why are these campaigns usually made for Thief Gold rather than Thief 2? Are the modding tools just not as good in 2?
more fun physics for me personally. They are virtually the same though, hell, System Shock 2 has the same stealth mechanics as both but it has no light gem so its hidden.
Isn't 2 the same thing but with better enemy models, animations and AI?
Most missions are for Thief 2 because it traditionally had better tools, but nowadays they're about the same and if you want to
use Thief 1 assets, making the mission for Thief 1 saves the trouble of having to port everything over.
Is it possible to recreate the bunnyhop in Thief 2's dromed?
With newdark installed, you can add "jump_speed_boost 1.4" to cam.cfg or cam_ext.cfg (i either will work). That restores the bunnyhop.
lol holy frick thanks man
Idk if I just missed it in some install tutorial somewhere.
most (not all) high quality missions use a very high quantitiy of custom made assets
as other anons have said, actually most FMs are for Thief 2, but T1 has been getting a lot of love in recent years. T1 has different ambients and textures, and it also has no colored lighting (unlike T2) which gives it a starker colder look IMO.
So you run FMs for each game through the game's launcher. What about the dark mod? Is that just it's own exe that you use to launch mods made in it?
>So you run FMs for each game through the game's launcher.
That's right.
>What about the dark mod? Is that just it's own exe that you use to launch mods made in it?
First of all, The Dark Mod is a free standalone Thief game recreated on a doom 3 engine (which was updated frickton). It has it's own mission downloader & selector which can be accessed through the main menu.
>First of all, The Dark Mod is a free standalone Thief game recreated on a doom 3 engine
So yes to my question?
Yeah, pretty much. Think of it as of GMod but with a built-in mission downloader
Most complicated and robust missions with custom scripts, models and so on were done for Thief 2. People go for Thief 1 if they want to capture that gritty medieval steampunk aesthetic that was unique to that game, something Thief 2 has unfortunately lost, mostly.
Sick. I'll try it out later, thanks for the heads up.
this sounds pretty great, and it also reminded me that I never played the original thief, which I think I'll do so now, thanks OP!
Patch it with either TFix Lite or NewDark. Don't use full TFix it fricks up and changes a buncha stuff, mostly for the worst. And even if you say 'no' to all optional changes in the installer it will still change a bunch of stuff regardless. NewDark is the way to go and TFix Lite is basically the moron-proof way of getting it working.
Have fun
thanks for the advice frens
find the modern control scheme on steam guides, they make all the difference
So what's the best way to install this.
There are so many fan mission loaders and everything, and I don't want to mess this up.
Any pointers?
open cam_mod.ini
remove ; from ;fm
thief.exe
simple as
>Get the gog version 1.26nd
>Inside the thief gold folder you have a file named cam_mod.ini, remove ";" symbol before "fm" in line 10
>Now it will launch a fan mission selector every time you run thief.exe
>run it, there will be a popup to set up a folder for archived (as in file format, like .7z, .zip) fan missions, set it up
>put the desired fan mission into the folder
>close the game
>relaunch thief.exe
>it werks
Fricking awesome, it's going to be a comfy holidays.
artful
This actually looks really good with my Reshade for Thief 1.
Check it out--it's the only Reshade in existence for this game as far as I know.
https://www.nexusmods.com/thiefthedarkproject/mods/2
maybe I don't know what a "reshade" is, but shouldn't you be showing it off with original textures?
replied to the wrong post, I meant the nexusmods screenshots
This is without the HD Mod, the mod itself has its own textures, and is in fact incompatible with HD Mod.
I am uploading an update for it tomorrow to work better with this game.
are there any annoying undead missions
What's there to be annoyed by?
Join us. Join us now.
How old is this image? I feel like this kind of art went out of style in 2005.
I haven't played an FM in years. Gonna have to do that.
Holy frick I thought this would never come out, finally Ganker coming through with actually relevant vidya news.
thief skelly missions are actually far more scary than most horror games I can think of - classic or modern. probably because garret sucks at defending himself so it's like a survival horror to begin with. the mantis beasts are creepy, the zombies are well done, the wraiths fricking chain rattling is loud as hell, and I think the sword is probably the coolest level because of that one secret into the trickster's realm
A lot of it comes down to the excellent sound design I think. Hammer haunts are some of the spookiest sounding enemies in any game.
What's with the frick ugly low detail character models? Why are they forced when these maps would bring any toaster to its knees? And the constant conversations are annoying.
Holy frick the second mission is kino already
Holy shit
didn't think it would ever actually come out since that french dude went to work for arkane
Has anyone finished the second mission? Where can I find the golden clock?
It makes a ticking sound that can be heard from adjacent rooms.
Directly: It's in the narrow, tall landing at the top of the stairs in the foyer, next to the room with books and a fireplace
Found it, thanks! What did you think of the first two missions?
i really need to beat gold still. i saved at the start of song of the caverns.
jesus christ SHODAN made the level
what possesses a man to work seven years for free on a mod that will ultimately be played by 10 neckbeards and forgotten a week later?
It's fun.
I hope this thread hits the bump limit, not just because of the Black Parade release, but because it's the 25th anniversary of Thief The Dark Project
Asian girls!
Does Dark Mod use Thief 1 as a base and operate from there? Can search for fan mods in-game?
The Dark Mod and Thief have nothing in common, they're not the same game at all. TDM does allow you to search for missions in-game, but Thief doesn't.
Thanks, yo's.
dark mod is thief gameplay recreated in the doom 3 engine. completely independant. dark mod has an in-game mission browser/downloader but no rating system. go to thiefguild.com/fanmissions to sort by rating.
Oh Thief bros I never thought we'd be back
>my thread gets 10 replies being mean
