Creation of ESRB had a liberating effect on American publishers, now that they could add more risque content in M-rated games without a risk of moral panic breaking out about "toys for children". If anything, a great historical failure of ESRB was the marginalization of AO rating as a "frick you, we will not sell it in our store under no circumstances" black spot, the same thing which happened to NC-17 rating for films. Had the AO rating get more traction in the 90s, maybe the gaming medium would be much less stingy about questionable content today.

Early surround sound era was actually the best in gaming history. Nowadays the best you get is music mixed for stereo MAYBE and the rest is lazy positional audio procedurally generated by the engine in exactly the same way from game to game.
