In terms of design, in no lasting way really. The industry eventually outgrew over-relying on cinematics.
On the other hand, the lack of proper competition for Nintendo would probably have forced some sort of stagnation.

What would the cutscenes be like? Machinima-based?

I'm more interested in the parallel universe where FF7 was released for the Saturn as God intended

Segachads are too based to believe in God. The Genesis' name was used ironically

Would have ended up like Panzer Drgoon Saga, a game that everyone pretends to love but no one played.

      Agree.

Also I doubt it would have made that much difference, it's a single fricking game and it's not even that good. If it wasn't for this game another game would have been hyped up hugely for the PS1.

Sure the N64 would have been more successful, it wouldn't have suddenly killed the PS1. Lasting effect for even the next generation would be highly dubious. It was one game, and if I'm interpreting it right it was also on the ps1 right? And FFVIII was on the PS1 and not N64 right? If that's not the case then OP would have to redo the whole thread (which as pointed out is fricking moronic to begin with).

      >another moronic "another moronic" poster

No he's right. It's moronic in every possible way.

What if SMB3 was on SMS? A big thread talking all sorts of shit hmm? What if Halo was on gamecube? What if MGS was actually good? We can spend all day going through these ridiculous hypotheticals.

          not really
square specifically asked nintendo to develop a cd based device, nintendo fricked up and square jumped ship immediately
the development of ff7 STARTED with a cd based device in mind

the main difference is that the N64 would have fared better against the saturn in japan
the psx would have still won worldwide because developers REALLY wanted to push for CDs

The only real alternate history is Square on the Saturn.

It doesn't, because nobody is willing to buy a multiple set of 64mb cartridges at an extreme price for a crippled version of the game.
FF7 was built around disc media.
