Sure the N64 would have been more successful, it wouldn't have suddenly killed the PS1. Lasting effect for even the next generation would be highly dubious. It was one game, and if I'm interpreting it right it was also on the ps1 right? And FFVIII was on the PS1 and not N64 right? the development of ff7 STARTED with a cd based device in mind
the main difference is that the N64 would have fared better against the saturn in japan
the psx would have still won worldwide because developers REALLY wanted to push for CDs
The only real alternate history is Square on the Saturn.
It doesn't, because nobody is willing to buy a multiple set of 64mb cartridges at an extreme price for a crippled version of the game.
