      >super: not designed around the new control scheme. difficulty is not really there, but can still be challenging at times. items aren't as important so you rarely use them. still fun to use the whip.

Full whips controls massively devaule subweapons as the whip can now just basically do everything. Super Castlevania 4's levels are based on Castlevania's levels which aren't designed for multidirectional whipping
Chronicles is a better CV1 remake (it has multi directional whipping but only downwards or down diagonal when you're in the air which is at least better than 8 direction) and Bloodlines is a better game.

        >Full whips controls massively devaule subweapons as the whip can now just basically do everything
Sub-weapons are still useful in 4, especially the knife, axe, and the cross, but yes the whip does mean you'll use them less. The bigger problem is that 4 overloads you with hearts, so you never have to worry about sub-weapon usage.
        >Super Castlevania 4's levels are based on Castlevania's levels which aren't designed for multidirectional whipping
What the frick? 4's levels are NOTHING like 1's levels, they're all completely different. Half of 4 is spent outside of the castle while CV1 starts in it. Have you actually played 4 or are you just spouting shit from the egoraptor video? Chronicles is a better remake yes but that's because 4 isn't trying to be a close remake, it's a complete reimagining.

          Anonymous

          >What the frick? 4's levels are NOTHING like 1's levels
Are you fricking stupid? What he means is that the levels were designed for monodirectional whip controls and he's right. IV's whip breaks the game because the levels weren't properly designed with it in mind. The whip feels like a last minute addition, it simply doesn't work right.

            Anonymous

The enemies, sure. But the level design is clearly based around the whip and having the ability to move while in the air. The level design is absolutely nothing like CV1. The amount of times you have to swing with your whip or the spots where a lot of tight platforming is required like the chandelier section are clearly built around 4's movement/whip than 1's. 4's level design is most likely built around more heavy platforming because they knew basic enemies where easier to handle, so more emphasis was placed on platforming as the game's challenge.

Bosses in 4 are also built around the whip. The dragon's heads move way too fast to work with a one-directional whip, and the gold bat, gaibon, and death float above you a lot which means you have to whip up to hit them most of the time. Wiggling the whip around is also one of the best ways to deal with projectile spam since Simon's hitbox in 4 is so big.

I think the stupid one here is you if you can't see how 4 is nothing like 1 in terms of level design.

            bro
the game was designed with the multi-directional whip in mind, you act as if being a spiritual remake of the first magically means it was always intended for a straight whip. this isn't the game being "broken" by a core tested and designed mechanic, that's just the game inherently being easy and expecting you to whip at these spots and directions. they just made an easier CV game, simple as that.

Not really. The game as a whole is a retelling of Castlevania but the actual levels feature vastly different settings and far more setpieces. You DID play both games right?

While Chronicles also features some brand new locations, it also borrows much more music and level inspiration from Castlevania 1 than Castlevania 4.

      This.

I get people preferring Super though. Super plays differently, but it's not necessarily bad. Play on the second loop and it will definitely kick your ass despite the directional whip.

Bloodlines felt cheap to me the first few times I tried it. Very small amount of invincibility, and not a lot of weight to whipping and killing enemies. The boss rush theme also kind of gets old for Castlevania. It works for one-off stages like in Rondo where Shaft is the entire stage, but in Bloodlines it gets kind of annoying. Limited continues is also weird for Castlevania. Once I finally forced myself to get through it and beat it, I can appreciate it a little more. I don't think I'd rank it higher than Super overall, but I appreciate it being harder overall. Super at least steps up the difficulty once you get to the castle.

Bloodlines was ass after Germany, that part was the part that made almost quit the game, that and the fact that the game never actually tells you how to whip swing,
But bear in mind that Bloodlines has limited continues, CV1 and 3 didnt, so you could slam your head into a wall and power through it, Bloodlines doesnt give you that luxury, so it FEELS more brutal.

You can search "(game) manual" for almost any old game and have the first result be a direct link to a scanned pdf. Especially so when it's a game that was on the Genesis Mini and the manual is hosted on Sega's own website.

Wrong. Konami did it with all their 16 bit games because of the rental market.

Japs couldn't rent games so they could afford to be easier.

Westoids could rent, so the made the games harder. That way it was cheaper to buy them instead of making multiple rentals.

Simon is so big in IV that he becomes unwieldy for the shitty platforming and annoying bosses in the final sections and you die alot to stuff you shouldnt have. It's a fun game, but no where near as good as other entries and Bloodlines indeed mogs the shit out of it.

I don't like SC4 but I love the boss rush at the end. Gaibon and Death are some of the only fights in the game that feel like they were designed with 8-directional whipping in mind, and Death and Dracula are basically the only times in the entire game where whip-flailing is useful. The real late-game bullshit in 4 is the Frankenstein bridge that randomly kills you.

I can see why people like it, but so much of the game feels like hallways and it feels like the devs just fricking gave up at making interesting levels past the first two. The bosses are all pretty good, but I never want to replay it considering how much of a slog some of the levels feel, they're all painfully easy too, even moreso than 4 imo. 4's easy but it's level design puts more emphasis on platforming along with using your whip well, and 4's final levels feel more difficult than anything in Rondo for me. (Frick slogra though)

Bloodlines I think is the objective best classicvania, good interesting levels, good challenge, I just wish some of its boss fights were better, but at least they (mostly) go by pretty quick if you know what you're doing. 3 is also pretty great though the overuse of stairs makes some parts annoying. 1's also pretty great and very tightly designed for a early NES game.

also Curse of the Moon 1 and 2 are great and if you like classicvanias (specifically 3) you need to play them.

Well she's right. Ultimate/Conan Simon is a shitty rip-off of Frazetta art for the cover that homosexuals like James Rolfe think is what the character was supposed to look like. Simon's in-game sprite matches up to his red-headed manual illustration quite nicely, and Ayami's design actually does look like a recreation/re-imagining of this design. IE Simon's ACTUAL design. Also, frick the homosexuals, Ayami's Simon is 10x cooler than the Conan shit, he actually looks like an interesting character.

don't play the chronicles version (even the original mode in the psp remake is botched). it doesn't hold a candle to the x68000 version. you can play it with MAME or px68k but you need to plenty of work to get the original mt32 sound because only MAME supports midi emulation and MAME isn't really user friendly for the uninitiated.

I also loved the whole bridge-doll house-mirror house section. Fake Simon is one of the weakest designed and easiest bosses in the series but the level is great. The Werewolf is one of my favorite bosses in all of Castlevania too just for how far it goes with interacting with the arena.

The game was clearly designed to be baby's first Castlevania, but I agree on the Werewolf fight, and there were tons of great levels like the ice cave, and the play room. Funny how different Chronicles feels, I can beat X68000 in one try without even losing a life, but I usually game over at least once on Chronicles (no matter what mode I'm playing).

          >they actually made it to be super hard because they thought only hardcore fans would buy an x68k to play castlevania though?
IIRC when the game loops back to the beginning it ups the difficulty. A new game is so absurdly easy it isn't even funny (played via X6800 emulation, which was a royal pain in ass to set up). But when I play it via Chronicles, it feels completely different to play. I think maybe "classic mode" might start at the X68000's fourth level of difficulty rather than the first, but even then something about it feels off compared to the X68000 version, like the controls have some sort of delay, or the timing of the stages is different. Like I said, even in Arrange mode I usually game over at least once, whereas I can run the X68000 version blindfolded. It's super weird, like a gameplay Mandela effect.

most people who praise castlevania IV are those who have never played it at launch. the rule of thumb back then was if you paid $50 for a game which you can beat in a single sitting then you were scammed and SCIV was awful because of this, it just wasn't value for money. it was a game made for a more casual audience but it was not for the original castlevania enjoyers. It's not more engaging though. All it does is throw more enemies at you on-screen while your movement in that game is more limited. It's like every game of it's era.

                >movement is more limited like every game of it's era
Late 80's games are very experimental, some of them have limited movement like you said but a lot don't. Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Mario, etc. are all games that don't limit the players movement a lot, although some have smaller limitations like how in Ninja Gaiden, your jump immediately slows down if you to try to move backwards while you're in it.
The thing about a limited moveset is that IS engaging. Having to struggle with the controls and persevere is engaging. It requires creativity on the level of player to figure out what to do in x situation since there is no easy way out. Compare that to castlevania 4, where you can use the whip for everything, very sad!

you know people these days don't like games which doesn't bend over backwards for them. the players don't like to be challenged unless it has some sort of RPG mechanic which mitigates some of the difficulty as they play through it. the death of actually difficult videogames is a tragedy.

well I really don't know how to break it to you. there are several people here who would. I actually prefer replaying a lot of castlevania games over SCIV.

your entire argument is moronic since pretty much every NES era konami game was easier in Japan, they only made them harder in the west to stop rentals

so ? the argument would be still be valid if you are not Japanese which is the likely scenario for anyone posting in an english imageboard.

    Classicvania: SC4 > Rondo > Bloodlines > 3 > Dracula X > 1 > 2

Metroidvania: SotN > HoD > CotM > AoS > All the games I haven't played

    This is the correct order.

SC4's main problem is how frickhuge you and the whip are. You threaten a massive chunk of the screen with your reach at all times. You can also whip through walls, which comes in handy in quite a few spots.

I find 4 harder than both rondo and 1, I honestly don't get why everyone memes about it being easy. Bloodlines and 3 (if you don't use grant) are probably the hardest classic games imo. That said most of 4's difficulty is in the final levels.

Maybe it's just because I'm more ass at platforming than combat in these games but I still get tripped up on 4's final levels while I can 1cc 1 and rondo pretty consistently. I feel like a lot of the rabid hate 4 gets is people overcorrecting for how much some people jerk off 4 I feel that way about rondo honestly, it annoyed me how jerked off it used to be when it honestly is pretty lacking level-design wise.

Seriosly though, how do you get past that platform in Ninja Gaiden without taking damage?

        There are 2 ways
        1. keep the spin slash from the previous level (this is extremely easy as long as you don't break the second to last candle on that level and get the boomerang)
        2. abuse the spawning mechanics by inching towards the witch until she disappears out of nowhere

Use the spin slash from the previous screen. Winning at Ninja Gaiden is all about knowing the item and enemy placement.

i think that really is the gist of it. 1, 3, rondo, bloodlines, and even the ninja gaiden trilogy are pretty forgiving for the first level or so, and then they ratchet up to facefricking if you don't play it careful and know what you're doing. 4 eases you in pretty well and by the time the big boy shit comes out to play, you're versed for almost all of it except the spike at the very end, and that's just expected since hey, end of the game.

no. good games have a better difficulty curve. 4 really sucks at that. the game is a snoozefest till the last stage and then suddenly cranks it up to 11. the boss rush was the best part of the game.

      >I feel like a lot of the rabid hate 4 gets is people overcorrecting for how much some people jerk off 4
That's the thing though. There isn't any rabid hate for it. It's universally agreed to be the best classicvania game by a large margin. It's because of that, it becomes a target for any dorks on internet forums who have problems with anything about it. If Rondo or CV1 were considered the best, they would have torn those to shreds as well if not worse for all the stupid shit in those games too.

        >It's universally agreed to be the best classicvania game by a large margin
I'm pretty sure you're just falseflagging or baiting but 4 was always sort of disliked by a lot of fans while having others that loved it. Rondo for the longest time was considered the absolute best (even by those who didn't play it because it was jap only for a long time) then it got more accessible in the west and got its reputation changed.

Honestly 1 and 3 are the ones I've seen the most consistent positive reaction to over the years where opinions haven't really changed on them.

Nice revisionism. It's one of the best selling games on the fricking console while literally no one even played Rondo until the PSP remake.

It only sold 500k while CV1 and 3 both sold over a million. Also nice reading comprehension moron, I said Rondo was sucked off so much in the past BECAUSE so few people actually played it.

I've been playing castlevania 3 today, and the entire game is cool as frick but I got stuck on stage 7. It's complete bullshit. I finally found the pattern to avoid getting hit by the falling blocks but I just couldn't jump to the platform because blocks kept falling. I ended up getting softlocked, picrel

    >Upon Super Castlevania IV's North American release, the game was acclaimed by critics. Nintendo Power gave the game four overall scores of 4.0, 4.0, 4.5 and 4.5 out of 5. Among several items, the magazine cited the game's graphics, music, and action sequences as positives. In 1994 the game was reviewed by Sandy Petersen in Dragon #209's "Eye of the Monitor" column. In 1992, Entertainment Weekly wrote, "Vampire noir: dark, earthy colors; ominous, almost subliminal sound effects — and when your hero swings from chandeliers or dispatches monsters with his iron flail, a spine-tingling sense of impending doom."
    >Super Castlevania IV has been praised in retrospective reviews as well. In a 1997 Castlevania retrospective, GamePro said it "is still one of the all-time best games". It was named by Nintendo Power in a 2006 issue as the 66th best game made on a Nintendo system. It was ranked 27 in the last issue. Official Nintendo Magazine placed the game at 70 on their list of the 100 best Nintendo games ever. Game Informer's review opined that it "perfect[ed] the classic formula" due to its whip and less stiff gameplay. It also praised its use of Mode 7. In a review for the release on the Wii U's eShop, Nintendo Life wrote "Unlike many of the other 16-bit platformers of the era, the game has a mature and distinguished feel to it", and concluded it was the best of the original Castlevania installments. In 2018, Complex listed the game 13th on their "The Best Super Nintendo Games of All Time", writing: "Next to Symphony of the Night, this is the best Castlevania game of all time. The control is perfect, the progression is perfect, and even the ramping up of the difficulty is flawless, as it gets difficult in all the right spots. Also, it has the best soundtrack ever." In 1996, GamesMaster ranked the game 55th in its "Top 100 Games of All Time". Several publications have lauded it as one of the greatest video games of all time.

Just make a new 2D Castlevania where you can whip in all 8 directions. Why the frick is that so hard? Even ripoff Castlevania games like Bloodstained follow the NES formula which is annoying. I don't want to fricking play NES Castlevania or Metroidvanias. I want SUPER CASTLEVANIA 4 style gameplay that's still linear like the classics but better gameplay like 4. Just give me more control and more freedom when it comes to the controls and the whip but make it more challenging as well. Why doesn't anyone ever do this shit.

It copies literally every trope from CV2, but goes out of its way to circumvent most of the frustration.
For instance, villagers still lie but there's an item that shows exactly what part of their statement is the lie. And the invisible holes in the floors of the mansions can be spotted because they look slightly off color.
Stuff like that. But it does really expect you to know Castlevania 2's legacy to get the references and puzzles.

I've played every Castlevania including Kid Dracula and Haunted Castle multiple times. Super Castlevania is still the definitive game to me. Also the N64 games aren't nearly as bad as people claimed and I was lied to.

I went through almost the whole series last year (skipped a few oddballs like Haunted Castle and stopped before Lords of Shadow) and was pleasantly surprised by both N64 games. I ended up really liking Dracula X too, which people love to shit on but I think is really ingeniously designed.
