and I'm tired of pretending it isn't
>customizable characters who level up, get gear
>atmosphere, not an "OMG mindblowing" story yet told well all the same
>High level of vocabulary, but reading/cutscenes are optional
>causes internal conflict with player, bcuz need to be Vulcan Math autist to progress, but get unintentionally attached to characters anyway. Then they die.
Thoughts /vrpg/ ? I welcome dissenting opinions but plz use brain b4 typing
I'd call it an RRPG (Reddit RPG)
A trifling RPG, but an RPG nonetheless.
I wouldn't call it a Reddit RPG because Reddit will ban you for telling everyone true, verifiable facts about H.P. Lovecraft.
Shitposting is a slow and insidious killer
>Reddit will ban you for telling everyone true, verifiable facts about H.P. Lovecraft
Like the fact that he secretly had Welsh ancestry?
>Welsh
SAVE ME Black personMAN!
>Reddit will ban you for telling everyone true, verifiable facts about H.P. Lovecraft.
Or you get banned for "THIS IS THE FIFTEEN THOUSAND FOUR HUNDREDTH AND NINETY-EIGHTH TIME WE'VE HAD THIS DISCUSSION AND WE, AGAIN, DO NOT GIVE A FRICK THAT HE CALLED HIS cat Black personMAN"
>Reddit will ban you for telling everyone true, verifiable facts about H.P. Lovecraft.
and Ganker will ban you for telling true verifiable facts about Lewis Carroll
1 no
2 maybe bcuz they added a Romance option, roided out the graphics, and dumbed down the difficulty to babby mode
Where's the real time combat?
Why aren't you manually controlling one guy to travel across the screen and button mashing?
Why isn't your friend playing with you?
It's not even a roguelike, you're just playing a campaign with permadeath for your characters.
Red Hook doesn't know anything about what a dungeon crawler is. Now Klei on the other hand, they do.
Yes, and?
>but this one felt like too much of a timesink and not even in an enjoyable way.
That's because it is a time sink. The darkest dungeon is the worst part of the entire game and you need a guide, and good dice rolls, to make it "fun".
>Yeah - it's possible
It really isn't. Don't listen to those idiots who watched some streamer play a modded game or alt F4 when the entire enemy squad is grouped together in initiative and focuses on one character because lol, that's RNG baybe.
Lepers are fine, they just need an ACC trinket. Their targeting is bad, yes, so they can't go to certain zones later on, but their damage is basically a Bounty Hunter but without needing to set up a mark.
>Lepers are fine, they just need an ACC trinket. Their targeting is bad, yes, so they can't go to certain zones later on, but their damage is basically a Bounty Hunter but without needing to set up a mark.
Nah, like you said, the issue is that they can't apply their big damage to the ranks you actually care about doing big damage to 95% of the time. The leper's great in the farmstead where you care more about racking up the most kills possible as well as on certain bosses like the swine/crew, (although pretty much every setup is good against the swine and the crew isn't that hard in the first place) but for the vast majority of the fights you'll be getting into over the course of the game, the leper won't be able to do shit to the priority targets that you really want dead ASAP (bone courtier, bone arbalest, cultist witch, madman, brigand fusilier/brigand cutthroat if the big guy is taking up the first two ranks, the old crone in the weald, the fungal artillery, swine drummers, swine wretches, pelagic shamans, bone trumpet man, violin playing jackass in the cove, motherfricking swine skiver, hateful viagra or whatever she's called, etc).
This video is kinda dated at this point but it still sums up all the main reasons why the leper is so underwhelming most of the time, plus it's funny seeing him get so pissed off at how bad of a class he is kek

>lepers are fine, they're basically [other bad class]
It's a trade-off for having really good damage burst and self-sustain. They are a selfish class, but really good at what they do and really good for final chapter bosses as well. Like with any class really; just be smart about which mission you pick and what's your party comp is like.

OP is an rpg
I generally like roguelikes but this one felt like too much of a timesink and not even in an enjoyable way.
Losing one character's worth of progress is standard for this genre but losing an entire party to a literal diceroll is just too much.
DD would be much more enjoyable (with it's somewhat high character lethality) if there were more springback mechanics - like I dunno, reliably resurrecting some of your dead guys with le unspeakable nightmare stuff, or ACTUALLY GOOD recruits in lategame.
The way it sucks now is that losing characters in lategame is less
>"Oh no, what horror, what emotional impact!"
and more
>"Oh no, I'll have to grind gear and levels for the new expendable shmucks for the whole weekend"
>JuSt DoNt TaKe CaSuAlTiEs ItS pOsSiBlE!
Yeah - it's possible if you use only specific optimized compositions, with only specific skill builds and trinkets, doing only specific missions. The game stops being an adventure and becomes a static algorithm. This kills all enjoyment except "numbers go up".
There is actually a rare event now that will bring back up to 3 dead characters as a town crier free recruit.
I know - that is why I specified RELIABLY. The event is rare so may never fire off, and most likely fires off only once or twice across the whole playthrough - and it gives you a choice of 1 guy out of 3 picked randomly from your entire graveyard, so most probably not your lategame PowerLepers but rather some of the scrubs you lost in the early game.
>Lepers
now i see why you are struggling.
>zero mobility
>zero stun or CC
>can't do shit to affect the back line
Lepers are the worst class Anon
Lepers are pretty decent by midgame, just have a rough start.
the springback mechanics are game knowledge based. If you know what you're doing levelling isn't a big deal. The mistake is getting attached to a "favorite team" instead of learning how to make weird comps work.
Honestly, this game filters even non-casuals but that's part of the reason I like it. Like, finally, a fricking challenge with actual penalites for making mistakes! I haven't had a single death or party wipe without being able to identify a mistake I made.
>inb4 "muh RNG"
Casual shitters are too arrogant to use the run the frick away from this fight right now and leave the goddam dungeon button, which the game points to and says "you will need to use this"
>If you know what you're doing levelling isn't a big deal.
It's not some arduous undertaking - it's just a grindy timesink, doing the same things you already did in the same way you did them previously, multiple times.
> I haven't had a single death or party wipe without being able to identify a mistake I made.
Agreed - there is a lot of space for optimization, but I feel that optimization kills most of the fun - it makes most skills, most compositions, most missions and entire classes obsolete.
You don't have to do it at all. Unless you MUST replace your four Super Mega Awesome Best Friends party, which you're not supposed to have. You don't take on the endgame dungeons with a single instance of 4 characters, you take them on with 20-ish maxed out characters, knowing you'll lose a few troops in the porcess. If a hero dies then you run and use a different, smarter comp
If you have a full maxed team of 28 with 1 or 2 of each class, and a good trinket supply, there's no reason to replace dead heroes at all besides lack of learning from mistakes
>You don't have to do it at all.
Refer to
>JuSt DoNt TaKe CaSuAlTiEs ItS pOsSiBlE!

It's simply ceramics.
One mod I wanted to make was one that would make hunger tiles give a much larger health boost if you ate provisions, turning them from RNG "frick you" to RNG double-edged sword.
Yeah, that would be a nice change.
Don't recall seeing a mod for this either, only hunger removal.
i felt the same way too, and quit at the end. then a year later i got drawn back into it, and decided to unleash my inner speedrunning autist - i got gud and enjoy the game on a whole new level now
you really do need to get deep into each class, and treat your party as lovable but disposable heroes, but you don't lose to much if you GIT GUD
Thread OST:
It's not even losing characters. After a while you get good enough at planning a fight that you never lose anyone and STILL its massively grindy because you can't take a character into the last dungeon more than once so you need at least 6 fully leveled up parties which is just playing the same game 6 times. Its moronic.
>6
there are only 4 story-relevant endgame dungeons.
also you dont level individual parties from level 0-6, instead you level your roster as a whole since you dont have access to high level skills and equipment.
>get gud at planning
This is why I hate roguelites, souls, and other fake difficulty games. Their fans sincerely believe the games to be difficult. They don't recognize their power-creep as a design feature inevitably achieved by grind. They think their skill improved.
The skill you develop while playing these games is bullshit tolerance. You slowly learn to just sigh and carry on. It's like your mind gets shattered and your heart gets crushed, and you learn to plod on regardless because what else are you going to do with your life.
ouch. Grim my dude.
One detail anon, veterans of the Darkest Dungeon grant XP bonuses to parties they're in and I THINK they have looser restrictions on what quests they will go on.
You get +50% xp for every veteran, but they're still restricted to champion dungeons so realistically they can't help anyone below lvl 4 or so.
I just modded the restriction out because it's dumb.
There's also a bug that is trivial to exploit where you can bring any character anywhere.
How do you get wiped to one dice roll? The only way I see is chain heart attacks, but if you ever get to a point where someone dies and everyone else is at 180 stress , that means you chose not to press the retreat button and got punished for going all in instead of cutting your losses earlier.
I don't mind the penalty of losing a party if you frick up as such but there's two issues with it
>The midgame has basically no new content and is just about leveling your team until you can enter the endgame, therefore losing a party means losing a huge amount of progress
>Level mechanics that don't let you bring low-level characters to higher level dungeons to level them up faster
I just modded out the level restriction so I could take low level to higher, and vice versa, because it's just a pointless extra wall that slows down progress.
it's mobile tier
It's a dungeon crawler rpg, sure. You make choices not in dialogue options but in gameplay. Is there an ongoing argument whether it is or isn't one? It would be more important to ask if it's a good one or even if it's a well-made game at all.
It's not a RPG, but it's a good game and a roguelite dungeon crawler done right. Its turn-based combat shits on jarpigs too.
yeah duh it's an rpg. I hate the roguelike fake-dificulty -> grind pattern. You also have kids who think "getting gud" means playing until you are higher level.
whose role do you play?
>DD2 has random gay romances that you can't disable
pass
>Well throw another one on the woke pile of shit I'll never play, fricking why lol
Who are you quoting?
I'll never understand why you rightoids are such snowflakes
Once a game starts forcing politics to me, I think i'm entitled to not pay for their product, it's an absolute insult.
>demoralization
Oh yes, I also notice poverty, inflation and socialism on the rise, surely that must mean it's a good thing.
Anyways, is this bait or something? Is almost as if you were trying very hard to get your side to be even more hated.
Based af.
They really told the homophobes "go back, youre not welcome here".
You didn't notice that DD1's names were all drawn from the same pool did you?
>RNG homosexuality
AAAAAH SAVE ME ANCESTOR
>turn based rngfest with 4 homies in a row and endless grind
it's West-made JRPG
Battle Brothers is more of an RPG than that. BB is a better game, too.
Not really. It's less of an RPG than Endless Space 2.
Darkest Dungeon is also a legit bad game that almost entirely relies on the art, narrator and mood.
>customizable characters
Ah yes, you can equip up to 2 trinkets, peak roleplaying
>level up
Not really part of roleplaying intrinsecally
>get gear
That's not even in the game
>atmosphere
Not really part of what defines roleplaying neither
>well told story
see above
>High level of vocabulary
Try again
>characters die
Do you even know what roleplaying is?
I love it, but I don't grant it the statues of RPG on the virtue of there being 0 roleplay.
Just like JRPGs, it's something else.
>its a rpg because customizable characters who get gear
Fortnite is a rpg.
Do people actually think that Darkest Dungeon and by extension games like Wizardry aren't RPGs or are they just memeing
Mostly memes but there are a couple of delusional Monte Cook followers constantly screaming about the superiority of Infinity Engine RPGs
Do people really think that Among Us and by extension games like Witcher 3 aren't RPGs or are they just memeing

I know you're baiting, but if you can't see the writing on the wall you're either massively deluded or moronic.

The greatest and oldest cope of them all
Ah yes state enforced disorder and unnatural ways of life is surely the key to a stable society. There definitely won't be a backlash as people are pushed further and further from the natural order. You're totally safe and sound forever.
>I-It's not hard... I'm not bad *sniff* *sniffle* I-I just don't have the p-patience for grinding. It's all RNG! I'm not bad! I'm not bad! *chokes back tears*

Homosexuality has been observed in 450 different animal species while homophobia has been in 0
>the greatest and oldest cope of them all
Religion?
Yeah its a pretty old cope.
>even though i cant stop you my book character will punish you someday... maybe... but i got 0 proof besides book saying so.
Homophobia has been observed in 1 if you include humans in animals.
>b-but male animals engage in domination behaviors
>that means being a homosexual is heckin cute and valid
Humans are not animals. homosexual sex is disordered and disgusting. There's a reason the vast majority of people have an innate disgust response when seeing 2 men kissing. Those who don't have that response were molested as kids or broken by internet porn.
There's plenty of proof for God, but you're a midwit homosexual who has never read Aquinas.
>b-but male animals engage in gay sex
>that means being a homosexual is heckin cute and valid
So now youre moving goalposts from it being natural to it being cute?
>There's plenty of proof for God
Post it then.

Give me 1 reason to read it.

t. middest of wits
You know who else thinks that non-chosen humans are nothing more than basic animals?
The subversion has been going on for a while, but I still can't understand why some people seem to prefer to agree and believe we are mindless beasts. There is clearly more to being human. A casual glance at recorded history, mostly that it was recorded at all, proves there is more.
I don't get why people get so upset at the suggestion we're classified as animals scientifically. No one said we're literal beasts, it's a biological classification you insecure fricks.
Modern science is gay. I'm not an animal.
Weren't you banned, Farquaad? Are you evading again?
The Ad Hominem fallacy is not an argument.
You really shouldn't use natural/unnatural as an argument for why something should exist or be acceptable, regardless what it is.
All kinds of fricked up things and extreme behavior is observed in all forms of life throughout history.
>homophobia has been in 0
You also shouldn't pull numbers from your ass.
You absolutely can't tell if, when and why animals would treat other animals worse or even kill them for that kind of behavior.
Besides, they would die and not spread their genes anyway. Making them a failiure of natural selection.
>homosexuality is bad because its unnatural!
>*gets proven wrong*
>You really shouldn't use natural/unnatural as an argument!
???
>A series of paired-samples t-tests was performed and found that sAA responses to images of same-sex kissing (t(98) = 3.124, p = .002) and universally disgusting images (t(98) = 2.128, p = .036) were significantly greater than sAA responses to the slide show depicting everyday items. This result held across the full sample, regardless of individual levels of prejudice. The results of the current study suggest that all individuals, not just highly sexually prejudiced individuals, may experience a physiological response indicative of stress when witnessing a male same-sex couple kissing.

it's totally natural and normal, goy. they're just like us!
There's no choice, therefore there's no roleplay.
Not an rpg.
Next.
Is XCOM an RPG?
Honestly it looks like it was made by monkies that had never played an RPG before but only heard what they were like
>Basic biological classification is now "gay"
So we should stop classifying humans as male or female too, right?
I find it more of a chore than an RPG.
It looks okay I guess.
True.
Why do people refuse to admit DD is a rpg?
What do you roleplay as?
It's as RPG as FF tactics is.
homosexuals?
On my video game role playing board?
I was thinking about getting this on sale but this trainwreck of a thread convinced me to never touch this game with a 10 foot pole.
If Darkest Dungeon was a JRPG, threads would be more tolerable because there wouldn't be mentally ill WRPGgays surrounding it

Yeah but then the threads would be filled with moronic weebs arguing about dubs, shipping, censorships and their troony strawmen.
