I don't understand why younger generations find this sort of thing so unsettling, Like I came into work on a day off, and it was just me in an empty building where there were normally people. I actually found it pretty nice and relaxing. The stillness and quiet was great.

You go in Bob-Omb Battlefield, Cool Cool Mountain, Bowser in the Dark World and the door to the basement, and also there's two coins (that are shitty 3D models instead of sprites for some reason). Toad is just off-screen to the left, the staircase is on the right.

To be fair, the music in Peach's Castle isn't exactly what I'd call "cheery". It actually sounds kind of empty IMO, which may be part of the reason why so many people are creeped out by the castle.
Don't worry zoom, I'm with you on that. It was scary back in the day too. Playing Mario 64 in the dark at midnight was like having fun in a horror movie. I had no idea what freakish ghoul was going to be waiting around those janky ass doors. Same goes for most N64 games at night honestly. Fricking cryptic ass polygons.
I know what you mean actually. Seeing those boos appear seemingly randomly in certain hallways, having their haunted level show up out of nowhere, the fact that levels would totally change per star, it was kind of an eerie game to be sure.
I don't know why but upscaled 6-7th gen grafics make me so hard, when everything is crisp and sharp with minimum blur or smoothing effects, I fricking love that esthetic.
Mario 64 had bits that were actually scary for kids. There's no need to pretend the entrance hall or the front lawn was scary.
