      Sonic & Knuckles was a stand-alone game.

It's literally the second half of Sonic 3. They couldn't fit it all on one cart. Look at the sound test screen on Sonic 3 if you need evidence.

          That's like saying Sonic 2 isn't a stand-alone game because it's a sequel to Sonic 1.

            Anonymous

No, that's not the same thing at all. Sonic and Knuckles was developed as Sonic 3 from the start. They split the game into two parts due to memory limitations. This is common knowledge and the devs have talked about it quite a bit. It is literally Sonic 3 part 2 and always has been. That's also why all of the S&K levels are listed on the Sonic 3 sound test screen.

except it isn't. It's a concept called 1 for the price of 2.

Except both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are complete games on their own. They both stand on their own and thus are both stand-alone games.

Just like movies that were cut in half to sell 2 movies are complete movies. It's an irrelevant observation and point you are making. It's a rare thing to happen in media, but it does happen and you're either being obtuse on the subject or woefully ignorant about it.

the intended way to play is to play S3 base first, beat big arm, and then lock on s&k and continue from there.

It's a cool game and Lock On was a neat gimmick. I wouldn't consider it the best game of the 90s though.
What I do like about it is what it represents - this is SEGA at it's absolute peak of popularity and cultural influence (in the US at least). Everything would come crumbling down for them right after this game was released.

Super Metroid and FF III beat it handily. You could make a strong argument that DKC and Mega Man X are better as well.

It's my personal pick for best gaming year. If you look at everything that came out, there's also tons of great "B titles." Not to mention there were about a dozen viable systems in total, PCs were showing they could do action games, arcades were still relevant, magazines had gigantic page counts, and the next gen consoles loomed on the horizon. It was a very exciting time and in my mind is the last year that feels truly "retro"

My all-time pick for best gaming year is always 1998.

            >Baldurs Gate
            >Ocarina of Time

I'm not sure about the achieveing part but this has always been my favorite sonic game. It's baffling to me that sonic 3 has a better reputation.

It's a letdown after the great Sonic 3. It's not quite as shoddy as Sonic 1 tends to be, but damn if Sandopolis doesn't drag on and on. It also made the original mistake of having non-robotic enemies and supernatural, mythical elements. The utter gayginess of 3D Sonics would take from those aspects of S&K in spades.

      >letdown after the great Sonic 3.
I have nothing against S3 but it is absolutely the weaker half. Together it is the best Sonic game ever made but separated I R8 S2 over it.

I wish they had the flying battery in S3. I don't think they had the balls to end S3 on ice cap zone though. Launch base zone in style is a decent "ending" to sonic 3. It's a fairly flat area though. I'll say too, bumping launch base as the intro to S&K? Could have been pretty damn interesting. It also would put some water in S&K which its lacking.

It gave you something to do as tails in S3 as tails can swim. Still, I think they straight up didnt realize there's no water in S&K. Still wild to think all but Marble Gardens has water in S3. The bubble's air supply mechanic is worthless in S&K.

It's a great game, but not as groundbreaking as the original nor as unique as something like Sonic CD. What -is- seldom mentioned is the Windows version soundtrack, which can be enhanced with the right MIDI patches.

always loves s&k3. One of the first games I got all the emeralds and got the secret last level.

I also like the hacked version that puts the levels in the right order, so you snow board off a door you stole from the flying battery.

    >It is confirmed by the original game's staff that Flying Battery Zone was originally intended to be played between Carnival Night and Icecap, but was moved around late in the development of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic 3 Complete features an option to restore it to that position, with a suitably altered night sky, and a further optional change to the indoor color scheme to match the unused save screen icon from Sonic 3 (which has also been restored). When moving from Flying Battery to Icecap, the snowboard sequence (as Sonic) involves the broken exit door from Flying Battery, as it was also once planned. Mushroom Hill also takes its name from the Sonic 3 level select, "Mushroom Valley", and a new transition takes you from there straight to Sandopolis if Flying Battery is moved away from its normal position.
Had no idea about the stage order being moved around until this thread and had to look up more about it. Neat!

It could be played as a stand alone game, with just the second half of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. It also made it one of the harder Sonic games. Could obviously be locked on with Sonic 3 for the complete experience. And it could be locked onto Sonic 2. Sonic 3 really came out early in 1994, while Sonic and Knuckles came out near Black Friday and the Holiday season 1994. It was almost like a reminder to purchase Sonic 3 as a holiday 1994 gift, and get Sonic & Knuckles with it.
