I'm starting to believe that's the case. It's short but extremely good. In fact I think that being short is actually a good thing about this game

It's one of those games that has very tight pacing and almost zero downtime, which I love. Alien Soldier is another game like that.

Might be, but NES has a lot of reqlly great games. It's one of the goats, though.

Also starting to believe this is the case. I realized how much better it is compared to every other castlevania a few years ago, its the game I go back to the most, the most fun to try to 1cc. I love rondo too, but like someone above mentioned, the pacing and length are perfect.

SMB 3 is fantastic, you get no arguments from me on that, better than super Mario world even IMO, but it's a slog... The game is long as frick unless you're using whistles to blow through the game and even then... Castlevania on the other hand is literally perfect.

All the naysayers need to go back and just try it again. Its such a great build up to the end as well.

SMB3 is the best game on the NES if you have modern sensibilities

SMB3 is obviously one of the best games on the NES (and IMO better than SMW), but CV1 is also at the top with it

Castlevania 3 mogs it easily. You just think it's the best one because it's a hit game from prime days of NES and was featured on Nintendo Power.

Not OP but I've never played any NES CV game before around 2010 (born in 1991)
CV3 is impressive visually (and the music is amazing in the Famicom version), but CV1 has better pacing. CV3 has parts that are just not fun such as having to backtrack in an action platformer

i like it better because of the arcade game length
cv3 is a better game because its the same game++
but cv1 has that cool arcade factor and add in some damage boosts and instant kills and youve got a super cool game to play

Also the best NES game of all time is DuckTales. It is also the best Capcom game of all time.

Nothing comes close in terms of the level design, balance of length, pacing and joy of finding secrets. Not even SMB3.

If there is a greatest NES game of all-time, that may be it. Other contenders are:
    >Super Mario Bros.
    >Life Force
    >Mega Man II

      >Life Force
I suck at SHMUPs but I feel like I still have to try this one
      >Mega Man II
I just finished X4 but I'm afraid this is going to filter me

        >I suck at SHMUPs but I feel like I still have to try this one
Life Force is tough, but fair, unlike Gradius.
It's way, way easier that than game, so please dive in without fear, but you still have to pay attention. You won't be no-deathing it for a while, maybe never.
I used to be able to no-death it, but now, ehh I just can't spend the time to do it. It's fun, though.

        >I just finished X4 but I'm afraid this is going to filter me
Mega Man II is easy, vrbro. It's probably the easiest one of them all.

You people are idiots. Why does there have to be a "best" NES game? Are you all 5 years old

The whole internet is like that.
      NPCism is a real thing.

It's especially ridiculous given that there's so many different genres, themes, and styles of video game, even on just that one console. It's hard for anything to be "the best" when other games can fit different moods more appropriately. The world is too vast to reduce everything to just one choice and say "we're done thinking".

Not to sound too normie but Legend of Zelda gets my vote. The freedom to go wherever you want, secrets, music, 2nd quest, etc etc. It also(to me) feels like an old skool dnd session put onto a NES cart. Castlevania 1 or 3 are really great games in its own right and I wouldn't fault anyone for picking as their #1.
