The only thing it has going for it is combat, and Ganker has already gone over how repetitive it is, and how simplistic it is because only Ibis, Balteus, and the final bosses are challenging. The environments aren't engaging, 2 of the stories are bare bones, and the 3rd is tacked on by idiots.
AC6 is an exceptional mecha game, which is why it got nominated for Best Action Game.
I want Fromsoft to lose this GOTY title, and then take what AC6 is, and then build better, with a deeper level design, multiple biomes, and a more engaging story. AC6 is the root of the perfect mecha game, it is NOT the final form, and should not be rewarded as such.

I think the year IS good, but not in a way that presents itself well in GOTY awards. The year has a shitload of solid 7/10 - 8.5/10 games, many more than previous years, but very little above that. So if you're looking at GOTY nominations, it'll seem shit.

Alan Wake 2 is the only game on this list that actually uses videogames as a medium to an substantial or meaningful degree. Which means it won't win, because gamers and morons on Ganker don't think of videogames that way, and they're ultimately still homogenized formulas that exist to trigger people's dopamine more efficiently than toys.

You know that people only want games for trying to fit properly into whatever specific and narrow box of arbitrary characteristics they have chosen to value.
I liked when labels, notions, and preconceptions didn't exist as much. Where games like Classic Tomb Raider couldn't easily be fit into a genre because it made it. And nothing to come after has ever played like it. When Silent Hill 2 proved that videogames itself, as a medium are special not simply for its gameplay, but the almost tangible experience it could instill, an experience that simply wouldnt be the same as a movie, where you were navigating and trying to understand a strange world and strange circumstances. When games like Prince of Persia Sands of Time thought it would be cool to make the character and story feel more personal and lively by having the Prince narrate the story himself and insist that "No No No, that's not how it happened" whenever he died. When Dark Souls 1 decided to try and make a robust, and cohesive hostile enviroment, where every push to the next bonfire managing your estus and navigating dark complex areas, felt like fighting for your life to progress. To find something new, to satiate that curiosity and sense of discovery and continue to press on through harsh conditions, and varied structures filled with a number of unique traps and enemies always ready to greet you.
Today. TR would be called clunky, slow, boring. SH2 a moviegame. SoT is marvel/disneyesque and DS1 simple and tedious.

I think Baldurs Gate 3 will win it to appease the HORDES of normies that pretended to play and love it. It was horseshit, a major step down from Divinty TOS 2 which I played a few months earlier, the combat in BG3 was awful and the characters were all snarky and hateable.

It's just a really great platformer with no fat. Every stage was fun to play. The difficulty was reasonable, they didn't baby it down like in NSMB, instead offering easy mode characters that you don't need to play as.
Nintendo has been very sparing in releasing this. Not counting Mario Maker, there just hasn't been 2d Marios for a long time and this is the best one since the SNES

as somebody who does enjoy platforms but also the other genres in the GOTY lineup I would say that Wonder is a great platformer where the other games are mediocre in their categories.
Zelda TOTK had a lot of baggage and tedium, it also tread a lot of the same waters that BOTW did and I don't think it can really be judged on it's own without the context of BOTW. I enjoyed playing it but I wonder how my opinion would differ if I hadn't spent over 100 hours in that world already

It "released" this year. Played it twice went it came out as early access, went through act 1, didn't come back to finish it off, especially after I heard both the other acts were weaker. Not as great as people have been making it out to be and there were better options for turn based gameplay.
