That applies to a lot of RPGs, but KCD has a lot of ways you can approach a quest, that's what makes it fun to me, also I don't think you should play RPGs for the combat.

It doesn't need any special kind of combat, same as most games don't need dark souls combat despite morons wanting every game with a sword have soulds combat.

It doesn't work 95% of the time. You can't tell from which direction the enemy is hitting to do a block/counter attack and the combos just don't work at all.
That's a lot of of words to say "I'm bad at the game"
