Three Kingdoms had a really good Diplomacy system. Just a shame the DLCs weren't good and base game campaign was meh.

Yeah Rome 2 really is the start of the cancer in the serier. Provinces, unit hp, forced generals for armies etc etc. Not that the games before were perfect but they didn't at least stubbornly stick to the moronic design designs the way they've been doing since R2
The thing I hate about HP is that it doesn't even match how it worked on tabletop. Most units only have 1 wound, and having more than 3 is rare even on powerful lords. It's basically the same as old school total war. Things are reliant on not losing combat, toughness and armour saves to no die.
No, that was Rome 2. Is Rome 2 any good now? I bought it back in 2016 and never played it.

At least there's a chance for some new games that might eventually be good, the franchise would be dead and buried if it weren't for Warhammer.
The fundamentals are still shit but it had a truck load of DLC bloat, bugfixes and some systems were changed since release so it's worth at least taking a look at, there's also a big mod for it, Divide et Impera, which a lot of players swear by and pray to at night so that might be worth checking out as well.
I still don't like it, it always feels like a better game in my head than it really is, but there's actually something to it now instead of it just being an unplayable pre-alpha. It's like the reverse of what happened to Empire, which they never touched after some bugfixes and instead made Napoleon, similarly, they made Attila to compensate for Rome 2 but they actually ended up abandoning Attila and tried to fix Rome 2 instead, which is also something that wouldn't have happened without Warhammer keeping the franchise afloat.

GW is a joke, they nuked their franchise before it got big with Vermintide and Total War and now they're desperately trying to cash in on the hype that has mostly faded by now, by selling decades old plastic molds for hundreds of dollars that weren't selling even when they were new...
Warhammer Fantasy was shit game by 8th, and replacing it with a skirmish game was smart. Killing the setting though, that was dumb and driven by greedy IP lawyers.

No, everything bad about this franchise really goes back to Rome 2. Arguably Empire, but Empire at least had good ideas to match it's moronic failures, hence why games like Napoopan and Shogun 2 could still be good. But Rome 2 is a travesty, and it's system continue to frick with the game. Every single thing that's bad about Warhammer Total War is a Rome 2 problem.

If it wasn't for matched combat, weird things like 1 province France (I get the design philosophy but it doesnt work in total war) and all the bugs it would have been a good game. Most of its systems aren't inherently bad like Rome 2.
