Most, if not all of those were released too late in NES’s life to really have an impact in America. And also, the 16 bit Dragon Quest games were better than the 8 bit ones for the most part.
It’s not just the graphics, the games themselves were better. Just being to talk to an npc or go up a flight of stairs without having to open up a menu first made them superior.
Only because NP hooked an audience early with free handouts of the first DQ game, but it didn't stick around by the SNES era and Final Fantasy usurped the top spot.
DQ’s biggest problem is that it never had an FF7. It was only after that game exploded in popularity that people started pretending as though they had been playing the series since forever, even though FF 2, 3, and 5 didn’t even make it to North America originally.
DQ8 was their FF7 moment. I think it was even the best-performing DQ stateside until 11.

That was PURELY because of the FFXII demo western copies had. That was a common practice back then when publishers thought a game wouldn't sell otherwise; just slap a demo of a game people actually care about and instantly boost sales like how Zone of the Enders was only a hit because of the MGS2 demo it had.
Because they were all delayed for years. DQ3, the king kahuna of JRPGs, took until 1992 to launch in the US. Four years after the game's Japanese launch and two years after the debut of the SNES stateside.
I think that was the plan, but the first four games fell way, WAY below expectations, given DQ's popularity in Japan, they expected the same in the US. I guess it also harmed the fact the anime was "too violent" for US TV standards, the plan was to air it too and nobody wanted it, things fell through and it ended up airing in latin america as "Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Fly", Fly being Dai's rename since it sounded too much like Die for the US TV market.
They're both good. The PS2 remake is one of the only remake in existence I may recommend to someone to play over the original. Or rather, it's the only remake I've played in my life which I didn't feel was inferior to the original in substantial ways.
The game have been fully translated since long ago I remember burning a copy and playing on a PS2 around 2017, only problem I found where the descriptions for the new museum items, besides that the game didn't have any problems.
Fun fact about about the three party mechanic in the original SNES version, apparently they made it that way because most kids didn't use the party change command in DQIV so they forced a three party in battles so kids would change characters more often.
New /vr/ knows shit about games, III, IV and V were always the 3 favorites here until the rule change >that one based contrarian that liked VI the best
It's just your average DQ game without any extra twist other than the dream world. It's good but people tend to prefer others in the series.
Frick those who pretend VII is better than VI though.
It does the Link to the Past thing where you’re constantly going back and forth between two different versions of the same world, only with worse pacing. The overall story and characters are actually really good, but many of the individual episodes in the story are pretty forgettable.

VII is just VI on steroids. The highs are ten times higher but the lows are ten times lower.
I love Dragon Quest IV too anon! I played the SNES version though. Its incredibly innovative in terms of storytelling too, with the whole different charcters for each chapter thing. The Torneko chapter was the coolest thing ever.
Sprites were too basic for western tastes.
I bet popular magazines would have placed it on the same category as Mystic Quest.
FFIV wasn't all that popular either.
Whay the walk is so slow?
It's weird to think how different the western JRPG fandom would be if this was released in NA.
>It's weird to think how different the western JRPG fandom would be if this was released in NA.
it wouldn't have made a difference
dragon quest 1-4 were all released in the US and no one gave a shit

if you dont like 8bit graphics art style you dont belong on /vr/

Yeah but JRPGs didn't start to build an audience here until the SNES days. The NES games hit just a bit too early
Not true, Final Fantasy sold at least 500k in the US and FF and DW games were constantly in Nintendo Power's top.

Probably not. Western JRPG fandom was mostly a result of 3d hype with FF7 leading the way and by FF10 it had mostly died off.
>Western SNES
Are you implying the SNES is twice as western than it was right now?
You are mommy's special snowflake, and you earned this gold star. 🙂

What version do you guys prefer? The original snes or ps2? I got like 75% through the snes version and lost my save.

DS remake was good too. Since I played the original, I picked the new girl.
I like the PS2 version for the music, its absolutely delightful.
DS
SFC PS2 and DS are all very good, but I have a preference for the visuals and music of the original
I've only played patched SFC and liked it. I'm glad it didn't have all the silly puns DQ games are known for.
Rate muh team

>Slime knight

>Healslime
Were the PS2 fan translation efforts for DQV ever finished beyond 75%, though?

I love this bloody game. It's probably my favorite of the NES series honestly. Why does it never get love on here?

I never played 6. What's the QRD on why it's considered lesser?

I want to puff puff

>SNES
Oh wait no actually I just remembered, I played the smartphone version. The SNES one was DQ3.
based Super Famicom enjoyer
4 was on the NES/Famicom

Playing a game with 8bit graphics is just too much for me. : /
I'll stick with PSX/PS2 DQ games.
