The skins do have a trait that influences gameplay, but you don't have to use the visuals.

King isnt a good dps, he is an amazing shield breaker and has the attack role which is important as you need 2 attackers for the dps buff
Samir is the best carry at launch but has low shield break damage so she needs a shield breaker
Nemesis amps electric characters, which Samir is thus the combo results in the most dps possible with dps buff, a shield breaker and a carry being amped by support

It saves it into a new preset each time you click Complete, you can see all your presets from the Share menu.
So you can actually make many characters and then choose from there ('copy character ID') once the servers go live.

So how does this game work? Is it like genshin where you roll for characters to use in combat and can bring 4 in a party? If so what's the point of the main character customization if you will never use them?
you roll for weapons that some come with a character, characters are like skin, so instead of using 4 characters you use 3 weapons and can change you skin at any time
The weapons and characters come in a pair, you pull for both at the same time.
The characters are essentially a "skin" that you can use to optionally replace your custom char with. Can change them at any time, and it's purely visual.
So you can take 3 weapons with you, and have 1 appearance.
That's an interesting take. Seems like the best of both worlds for people who want to use their own MC, although I wonder how they will be incorporated into the story.
