Last time I picked up a new job, I just did an internet search; "FFXIV 6.3 BRD rotation". Icy-veins has been a reliable site that usually pops up.

This anon has got it as well. If sitting in front of a target dummy and just following a flow chart or video doesn't work for you, then try Palace of the Dead. It's been awhile since I've done it, but I used it all the time to 'slowly' adjust to new skills. Having to learn in a more practical setting can work wonders. Seeing abilities and skills unlock as you level up can help learn the intended flow of a job.

FF14 players conflate annoyance with difficulty. The more buttons a spec has, the harder (and thus the cooler they are for playing it) it is. If you ever mention that maybe having less more meaningful buttons instead of bloated action bars of combo abilities that do literally nothing that couldn't be accomplished by merging the abilities into one dynamic button, you will get called every variation of moron they can think of.
They say this while using an addon that turns their static, non-interactive 2 minute rotations into a single button by the way.

BLM I get, since mechanics can really frick you out of casting, but why MNK
MNK difficulty is overrated, you just have to track two timers, and the burst can be a bit weird. Optimising around downtime is more interesting than on other jobs but noobs see some advanced tech and think that means it's hard to do the basic rotation.

You can skip the potion and it looks daunting because you're weaving ogcds but you're not doing much else most of the time during an opener anyways.

Im a SAM main so I could answer any questions about why certain things are used when, how to account for drift (2 gcd - 4 gcd depending on SKS) optimal time to use enpi/hakagure, optimal time to reset Higanbana, how to use a finisher combo for when things are about to die, why Gekko first, optimal True North usage, etc...
Though keep in mind you can easily clear content without learning all the advance shit, I just find the game more fun learning about it and using it
You don't really memorize it as this esoteric chart. I mean some people probably do but if you know your abilities you know when to hit them. Like you make sure you've got buffs up before you hit your biggest attack. Simple as.
Read what Meikyo Shisui does, and everything will make sense. It's just

Its not hard to do so. Its just memorization. Even if you screw it up a few times you should be able to recover and still do decent DPS. Unless you're running the hardest content in the game, you'll probably be fine. Even then you can probably still screw up your rotation a few times and succeed so long as you don't frick up the fight's mechanics.

All of the above plus, for learning a new job I recommend queuing into low-level dungeons to get the basics down and then move your way up. Especially for newer classes that start out off at a high level.
Alternatively, you can do something like Palace of the Dead solo starting at floor 1 to practice your job, since it starts you off at level 1 and you quickly level up as you move up the floors. PotD caps at level 60 but that will give you the basic rundown of most jobs.
Thanks anon I'll give this a shot. My biggest issue is understanding all the skill names. It's a bit overwhelming with so many and knowing when to use them. I know I could probably just spam random buttons like others here suggest but I would like to at least play the game somewhat optimally.
play healer. you can clear the entire story by pressing 2 buttons. spam heal the same move and your dps rotation is 1 button over and over.

Take it slow, and one step at a time. Trying to rush and overwhelm yourself is a good way to get demoralized and burnt out.

The only time normal roulette content is fun is when half your team is brain dead and die during normal raids or alliance raids (except the EW normal/alliance raids are piss easy and even in week 1 people weren't dying to them)

FF14 was built on the WotLK model of gameplay, for better or worse. Wall to wall AoE pulls and bosses with predictable set in stone mechanics. The middle ground between when WoW was soulful kino and when it became mind numbingly tedious.

you and all the people quoting you make a mistake: what you consider "hard" or "competent" and what most of the ff14 player consider the definitions of those words are two vastly different things. the vast majority of players freestyle their rotation, have no clue about aoe or rotations, and only have a vague notion that they shouldn't stand in bad circles (and they have barely any excuse to stand in them in the first place unlike dps tryhards who sometimes get hit by them out of greeding uptime). the deeper you dive into the community and the more people you get to know the more you realize just how fricking bad the general playerbase is in pretty much any game but ff14 really has an elevated number of morons on top of that.

they have their own mechanics, like healplans, swaps. Tanking p10s is more involved than dosing or, because if you frick up your additional mechanics, there is a pretty good chance everyone dies.

if you are a returning player just look up your skill rotation then do a lvl 50 dungeon with npc teammates, then a lvl 60 dungeon etc all the way to lvl 80 and you will easily be up to date with game mechanics

People were confused because it wasnt hard it just hit hard so healers had to pickup slack and people needed to just minimize how badly they did the mechanic, not do it properly. LFR was such a fricking shitshow and so was heroic because people would LITERALLY brute force their way through the mechanics (especially the portal shit)
Machinist AoE is hard because depending on the number of mobs there is 3 different AoE rotations, however their AoE is weaker than other classes, made up for the fact they have top-tier burst and amazing movement and defensives

Unless you're doing savage raids or ultimates, you don't need to do your rotation perfectly. Hell, that fricking Russian wizard guy managed to beat P8S while just doing the Warrior 1-2-3 combo. I think he finished P5S-P7S just using tomahawk.
As long as you are doing your regular combo and using your cooldowns as soon as they become available, you're doing more damage than 60% of players.

FFXIV is artificial complexity. The moment you realize most of your abilities are the exact same fricking thing just on a new button, it'll click. There are way too many buttons in this game. I had 3 sprouts doing the lvl 50 ultima fight for roulette and everyone died except me as the whm so I was actually challenged for once with reviving everyone and doing damage as the ultima timer was ticking down. If I had used the lb for ress we would have wiped. When I got the drg up i told him to limit break but he didn't know what that was so turns out i could have done lb3 ress. Somehow managed to get all up and finish the fight before the nuke went off. First time in forever being starved on mp and making weird noises whenever I got to pop lucid dreaming. I wish I was better at recording stuff.

All this tied together provides strong evidence that zodiark hunters have now started hunting endwalker detractors for low cows.
2,Bridging between their tactics and capabilities, it has been observed that they are able to utilize ambush tactics in both Ganker and threads they have specifically set up to lure in the players of the faction they targeting. They have done this previously multiple times, and are now doing this with endwalker detractors. On top of this, the zodiark hunters seem to be able to raid discord servers and seen in the archived threads. All of this indicates that there are in fact multiple organized individuals engaging in these activities. The revelation that these individuals are in fact a cabal of discord kiddies turning Ganker into their own lol cow hunting ground is indeed a troubling one.
3.The mental health of these individuals seem to quite dire. one of these individuals have projected the image of their 15 year old dork ass self unto me. Me who they have also (falsely) compared to a Zodiark trancer. This is a disturbing discovery. Now one could say they’ve changed, as after all that’s something people occasionally do. But there’s a problem with this theory. They have been doing this for years. As previously stated, the incidents with the zodiark trancers had started from 2020 to 2023. And they have been doing this with a absurd amount of dedication, to the point where one could even find them scouring the threads for anyone who seems like a detractor (presumably me). And I as also had said previously, they will go after anyone who talks about the the decadent state of XIV, and block off discussion in order to get a response. Meaning, they are going hostile after innocent users just for their cheap thrills
4.And speaking of cheap thrills, they’re true motive has of course been revealed. As previously stated, they are lol cow hunters. They are not anti trancers, nor do they have any serious beliefs. Uhhhh no, moron, of course they don't because you only do the opener right at the beginning of a fight and from that point on the cooldowns are lined up for you so you hit them as soon as you see them come up and you're already naturally under party buffs because the other people in your group have also hit their party buffs when they came off cooldown. This is only not the case in rare circumstances when a boss jump mechanic delays your reopener a bit.

Casual player here (only did some 70 and 80 extremes and some level-50 MiNE stuff for the experience) and I learned my rotation by reading my spells and thinking critically. Granted, I asked some friends I raiding with about the party buff timing stuff for different fights, but as long as you're generally on your shit with your rotation and fight mechanics (and aren't terribly geared) it's not too difficult to get purple. It legitimately is just competence.
I think the problem here is expectations. We're likely underselling "competence" by your context. For me it's: don't drop GCDs (drifting a bit is fine,) hit raiding timings, don't frick-up fight mechanics, generally show-up with recommended gear.

I can confirm. I have purple parses in basically all normal fights, and green with a few blues on savage. And I just raid with like tome gear, no pots, and sometimes food (basically when I remember to stock up or someone gets me free food)

The only thing you have to remember is your opener, everything is from there on is pressing 1-2-3 and hitting your oGCDs when they are up, waiting for your burst window again which is easy to track since everything is on a 2 minute window now.

I can't give up Legacy controls so that was a big black mark on wow when I tried it.
Also all the classes share animations. Like Survival Hunter and Ret Paladin had the same animations. Warlock and Mage had the same animations. Unironically makes the game feel like a shitty budget mmo.

Haven't played WoW in a while, but there are a lot more PROCs and RNG that keep your rotation fluid. Paired with the better netcode it's a lot more stimulating, even despite generally having fewer regular action during combat than XIV.
