It is weird to think of a console “gen” where one console launched 2 years after the other.

the Switch, SeX/S, and PS5 are all in the same gen. the SeX/S and PS5 most likely would have come out around the same time as the Switch but both MS and Sony delayed them by releasing a mid gen refresh with the XboneX and PS4 Pro. no gen should last 8 years.

un squadron is terribly overrated but it is basically one of the 3 shooting games on the SNES that doesn't regularly slowdown when there's more than 2 enemies on screen. It doesn't hold a candle to any of the excellent shooters on Genesis.

it's a casual platformer that lets you jump after you fall so baby boy doesn't lose a life despite the game giving you dozens of them by the third world. You only like it because it's a pack-in game by shit-tier brit jank devs. It was Nintendo's "we're cool too! See!" reaction to being BTFO by Sonic. I found it to be very of its time. The levels are constructed much like NES games, blocky level designs, very little if any free flowing lands and if there were any they were basically straight slopes. The cut back on content and mechanics from SMB3 was a shame, it felt like a downgrade and the music was nothing to write home about. At least it gave us this.

Dont get me wrong, sonic is some cringekino, but they were never actually good games. From the beginning of the g*nesis era the controls were sluggish and awkward. Hell the only sonic game with good controls was lost world and it still managed to suck somehow.

SMBs physics are very rudimentary, the slippery awkwardness of Mario makes a little challenge but very few platformers of even that generation were inspired by it. That's the surprising thing, despite Mario having its own model few games were inspired by it. Really Sonic brought us DKC, Mario 64, Umihara Kawase, Ristar and so much more. Mario um...well he brought us more Mario?

Implementing physics like in Mario takes effort. Mega Man games were made in like 4 months for a few bucks.

                >Implementing physics like in Mario takes effort
Yeah, but recycling it for the next 4 games sure didn't. You're doing a great job proving my point. Mario came out, had its own simple physics (slippery movement) but few games were inspired by it. Go play all the big ones, GnG, Castlevania, the Mega Man titles, Ducktales, Chip & Dale, Ninja Gaiden, Bionic Commando, find out how many are inspired by Mario yourself. I've already done the research because I've played all these games. The answer is:
                Nothing of note.

Because 95% of games are multiplatform these days. Back then, Genesis and SNES were so different that putting the same game on both systems was pretty uncommon. Even in cases here it did happen, the two versions often played very differently.

    >Yamauchi's first priority is fixing the disaster in the U.S. market, where Nintendo's share of the 16-bit machine business plummeted from 60% at the end of 1992 to 37% a year later, according to Goldman, Sachs & Co. With surprising candor, Yamauchi lays part of the blame on his son-in-law, Nintendo of America Inc. President Minoru Arakawa. When Sega started running comparative ads in 1990, Nintendo failed to respond. In effect, says Yamauchi, "Arakawa allowed Sega to brand our games as children's toys. It was a serious mistake".

People forget another PR disaster was Nintendo cucking on Mortal Kombat. The SNES was already heavily censored in the west, especially compared to the Genesis- no blood, no alcohol, no religion, no sex. But most people didn't have a firm comparison at the time to notice. But then Mortal Kombat happened, which had its whole sell be ultra-violence. On the Genesis? You had blood. On the SNES though? Nothing.

            Anonymous

Once Nintendo walked back the censorship for MK2 and 3 they outsold the Genesis versions. Voting with your wallet worked in this one instance.

            Anonymous

The funny thing is Genesis blood was still locked behind a cheat code. But everyone knew that on Genesis, it had blood. Not on SNES. This made Mortal Kombat a Sega game for the rest of the generation even though they were all on SNES.

            >Really Sonic brought us DKC, Mario 64, Umihara Kawase, Ristar and so much more

This was when console wars were a lot more interesting. No matter how much people argued, there were a lot of games worth playing on both systems and a true gamer would have both. Still amusing to see people argue over both versions of Aladdin. Nowadays, it's just a matter of which machine has slightly better features for playing multiplats over the other. Oh, that vidya box has quick resume but the other one has a controller rumble gimmick. It's fricking boring in comparison.

It's crazy how much superior the Genesis sound chip was. Artists today are STILL making tribute to it, using it for new music and writing new music just for the Genesis. They simply don't do it for the SNES. Why? Well, let your ears tell you why:

Same game, same developer, same song, holy shit the difference is jarring.

      Anonymous

The Genesis used FM synthesis, which has a potential evergreen quality, if you like the sound. The SNES was rudimentary sampling, which is prominent today, but the technology has rapidly rapidly exceeded the limits of the SNES, so it's basically an entirely different sound.

I don't care much for Sonic 1 or 2, but S3&K is a lot more fun to replay than SMW or Yoshi's Island.
Yoshi's Island is pretty disappointing to play now, it's so slow and kiddy, Yoshi has no physics and it's mostly just a boring collectathon. (I only bring it up because SMW is older and closer to the NES, so maybe more unfair to compare to Sonic)
