Did dragon age rip off the witcher (books) or is this some archetype with a name?
I’m guessing archetype since there are things that sort of rhyme with it like the watchers on the wall in ASOIAF, but I don’t know the name for it.

DA was a direct result of Bioware shitting their pants over Witcher. There was not-so-subtle butthurt posts on the bioware forums by developers/mods anytime Witcher was brought up. Lead to the "This is the new shit" marketing and them trying to up the blood and gore levels to be more "mature" like the witcher.

You moron, Dragon Age: Origins began as an adaptation of "A Song of Ice and Fire" and was later retooled.

One million copies in a year for a fully voice acted game, with more than half of those sales being in Poland.

Dragon Age: Origins sold 3,6 million in a year, for comparison.

And another American who lacks reading comprehension. I wrote explicitly it sold well in Poland and Russia, because every Slav with a PC bought it. Outside of those two it sold like shit.

It didn't? Also irrelevant to Bioware ripping them off.

I don’t remember people really shunning Wardens outside of the first game, and that was just because of Loghain. Usually Wardens are respected.

      This.
Lorelet forgot a Warden commander tried once to take down a Ferelden king so they aren't like there.

None of these elements are particularly original or creative. You can look into D&D/fantasy settings that predate both these games by a lot and likely find all kinds of mysterious orders fighting for the good of mankind while also being viewed with suspicion, having secret rites/joining rituals, and dying alone while fighting monsters.
