Wait, so GW can make restrained designs without too much clutter detracting from the silhouette and basic design of a miniature?

Wait, so GW can make restrained designs without too much clutter detracting from the silhouette and basic design of a miniature? These are great

Why the frick have they spent the last ten years covering everything in shite then?

    >make money selling other things
Shit's not complicated. Buy the things you want, dno't but the things you don't. Branch out from the gw ghetto if you want more variety for cheaper. Play the games you want with your friends, with the models you like. Live the good life.

As far as I understand it, the old Forgeworld sculptors got yanked from making FW products and instead have been tasked with producing the sculpts for all the GW “specialist” games. That’s why stuff like Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Aeronautica, Kill Team, whatever-the-frick-hex-AoS-Is-Called-This-year and Titanicus all look great, whilst 40k proper is a shit covered nightmare. There’s a handful of designers who still understand the value of restraint there- GW will probably do their best to bench them in time.

The specialist games sculptors are contracted out (as are some of the game designers), FW sculptors used to be contracted out. Some former FW sculptors got contracted to work on specialist games. There was no "yanking" the sculptors from FW, they were never directly employed by them in the first place.

    >GW can make
Companies don't make things, artists working under direction from management make things. Different artists and different management goals produce different results.

this is an important distinction because.... ?

If the company a few years down the line gets fans clamoring for a particular style in art or a model, they will often be unable to replicate it, or make new models consistent with the previous ones, because they will be using different artists each time. just look at the shit show now as an example.

Because it answers your question of why different models from the same company look different. You need to keep track of who is actually working on products. When all the talent leaves a company the output is going to change even if the brand remains the same

they look better than most aos sculpts but are basically still soulless with impractical warcraft armor and nothing compared to warhammer empire miniatures

Between sudden passion for witch hunter (3 unrelated kits in a year) and Frankensten zombies i think a GW designer just got inspired by Inistrad return that came around the time those would have been conceptualized

      >Inistrad
they're clearly based on mordheim, they even have the old witch hunter dogs in it and a warrior priest type of character. The undead warband in mordheim was also just a vampire, a necromancer, and a bunch of zombies/ghouls

So even when GW makes things you like you find a way to spin it into more whinging and self-pity? Oh well, I guess it’s all the fault of those terrible “wokes”, right?

Clutter detail is very cheap to add, but makes the figure feel more bombastic and expensive. So they can charge more.

This. I’m so tired of models that make the characters look like they fell into a vat of glue then took a roll in the contents of a goth’s handbag

GW skirmish games ave always had better design than their main lines, smalle scale means there's room for subtlety.

Specialist games are mostly like this, it's 40k and AoS which are clusterfricks.

Single Warbands for Underworlds are actually reasonably priced, (within the GW portfolio that is)

approx 25€ from a store that offers discount is not too bad.

Because Mantic and similar companies began to catch up to GW selling similar products, and GW panicked.
Their solutions were to a) make more specific, copyrighted models in their mainline games, b) make the minis as comples as possible to deter third-party bits companies and recasters and c) keep creeping the scale to make older models look weak and weedy next to newer ones (a trend that they'd been pushing for many years prior, to be fair).
They're more willing to make "old-school" minis for niche games with a smaller model-count since they're not risking as much profit there anyway. Underworlds numbers do not approach those of AoS/40K.

That is some severe tactical rock-ing on the bottom left

Since they're meant to be characters for a skirmish game I think tactical rocks are fine.
It's when generico infantrio have them that I start to raise an eyebrow.

Is this the first time you've seen an Underworlds team? They've been doing what you're describing with WU for years now. Even brought back the meme of faction/team symbols integrated into belt buckles/bracelets/etc that they used to do in the 90s.
