It makes sense now why Mike Matei had to keep reeling him back into doing AVGN before it got found by everyone online. Guess he hated his first two years in it's entirety (outside of the season specials and that Atari 5200 episode) as well.
That's one of my favorites mainly because I grew up with that piece of shit and most of his gripes with the game are completely valid and relatable, including wondering what the frick Pitfall Harry is doing when he dies. But also, James just did what makes the AVGN funny in the first place - focus on the game only and insult it.
No I hate episodes like this, it was literally just uninformative meme garbage and failed spooky time. I'd rather watch somebody like Game Historian talk about shit like this.
James is at his best when he simply rakes over a game and manages to act genuinely upset about them like , an episode I'd also rate in the top 20 if not 10.
I think they're not involved anymore, the recent episodes feel more like his older videos, he even got rid of the stupid open mouth reaction face thumbnails. And for some reason Youtube can't stop recommending me his Super/Virtual Hydlide video.
My least favorite Nerd review is the Taito Legends review, if only because it shows that gamers in the West only gave a shit about Capcom, Konami, Nintendo and Square and don't really care for much else
Honestly yeah. They're have been some mediocre ones since then, but the rest are all pretty bad after that. You can tell with episodes like the Sonic 06 reviews and the "Confused about Kingdom Hearts" video that he isn't even writing the scripts or playing the games anymore, or at least he wasn't for about 3-4 years there.
I feel like if AVGN retired with the earthbound episode people would look very fondly on james still in spite of the obvious drop in quality for a long time that had happened before that episode
Atari Porn Games was my introduction and still probably my favorite video he has ever done. I knew about Custer's Revenge, but I had no idea about the rest of them and was in amazement at how such a thing could even exist back in the early 80s. I had to take laughing breaks in-between a couple times. Ended up watching the rest of them on my Labor Day Weekend 2007 on my Wii's Youtube Channel while my parents were away. That was a great weekend.
