They basically scrapped the original 3ds manufacturing with the 'new3ds', but couldn't take advantage of the stronger hardware present because otherwise then you'd have a clusterfrick of game/hardware compatibility.
I could see switch 2 basically being the switch as it is with a dock that has its own hardware, allowing for more wii-u like design options, but also not removing the switch 'portability' factor.
