I tried played 2 for the first time twice right after I finished 1 and I couldn't get through it. It feels way too long and bloated compared to the streamlined story of the first game.

2 is a comical ant beating meme spewing pop culture referencing tactical game with a post apocalyptic backdrop
the memes in 1 were pure easter eggs whereas in 2 its the core content and makes the whole atmosphere a joke
I remember journos in my country hating on f2 for lacking variety and creativity compared to f1. I personally enjoyed it way more. It did feel like a bigger, better version of a recipe that just worked.
"Nerd culture" became so fricking mainstream and is hated so fricking much by people that grew tired of it that now even the old stuff with nerdy pop culture references gets hated on as a result, that's all it is. By today's standards yeah it would be bad, but these games weren't made today which is the part people here forget.
