I liked it but it definitely lacked a lot of what makes a Zelda game. My personal biggest gripe was the lack of progression. All the iconic items of previous games would have fit perfectly in this game like Pegasus boots for a dashing ability, roc's feather for higher jumping or just a hookshot.
There is also so much opportunity for new items like climbing gear to not lose grip when it's raining or an advanced glider.
Even the bigger dungeons where pretty underwhelming.
I really liked botw but I don't want the series to abandon everything else and I don't see why we can't have both.
Not to mention how boring it is to get all your powers in the prologue and then never again get anything new ever.
It would've been a lot better if you unlocked shit gradually, perhaps even based on koroko seeds to emphasize freeform exploration.

What's there to think about in PLA? There's no abilities or held items anymore and they gutted status effects and buffs. Just hammer away at super effective moves.
It still had all the endless unskippable story exposition though. And instead of trainer battles you had to throw magic baubles at glowy Pokemon to make them calm down.
Yes.

How is it faster to battle them than just throw some mud and a pokeball? Or just ignore them entirely. I'm not advocating for how trainers are either. I'm just saying PLA is also shit and the capture mechanic doesn't make it a good game.

They have really low catch rates unless you throw a Heavy Ball behidn them

Yeah, so do that. They're stunned from the mud anyway and the AI is moronic.

So you should just capture them as fast as possible then. Ok, battling them is slow as frick so I'll just throw some mud outside of battle to soften them up.

if you're underleveled you have no shot of beating them. Just catch them outside of battle, its less risky, gives you more items and you will probably get more XP since nobody in your party is gonna get knocked out in the process

for all of botw not benig a zelda game skyrim wishes it was botw so desperately
it's a game
it came out like 6 years after it so that's not the biggest mark againt it but still
I don't get why people complain about open world when it just expands the immersion Zelda is known for. >"Dude I can't go past this invisible wall, I wanna see what's over the horizon!" >"Fine ill program it where you can go past it." >"What the frick there's nothing to do, put the invisible wall back!!!!"
the open world isn't the problem, botw is literally the only game ever to back up what an open world promises
they just forgot to put a zelda game in a decent opern world
OOTs design is very different from ALTTP. Youre pretty railroaded on dungeon choices up until spirit or shadow. Absolutely nothing like the freedom ALTTP gives you.
>Absolutely nothing like the freedom ALTTP gives you
does it? I always did the dungeons in order.
ALttP numbers the temples so you know which order to do them. It's the same shit.
You can do the dungeons in any order after you get the hammer. I rush the titans mitts in thieves town to get the tempered sword as soon as possible before I do the other crap. There will never be another game like ALTTP.
ALBW scratches that itch, but ALTTP did everything right.
>you can go in any order you want! >if you do X, Y and Z >also you need to go into a dungeon and leave it >also also the boss of the dungeon with titan's mitts doesn't take extra damage from the red sword >so if you play super inefficiently, you can go in whatever order you want!

you have to be delusional to think otherwise
about to start the original zelda for the first time.
is it doable on a blind playthrough or did it relied on cryptic shit you needed game magazines to figure out?
It is doable without a guide. The game is usually pretty good about giving hints. I recommend reading a scan of the manual before playing for the best experience.
There were plenty of Zelda games in the 3D format that followed Ocarina of Time's example. I like the older 3D games, but it's nice having something different that goes back to the series' roots. BotW was great but was lacking in a few areas such as the small amount of actual dungeons. Overall, I like the new direction they are taking. I feel like it handled the open world aspect better than any other game I've played.
Me, because the last 2D Zelda game was 3 years ago, the last 2D Zelda game that wasn't a remake was 7 years ago, the last 2D Zelda game that wasn't a remake and wasn't multiplayer-focused was 9 years ago, the last 2D Zelda game that wasn't a remake, wasn't multiplayer-focused and was completely original was 13 years ago, and the last 2D Zelda game that wasn't a remake, wasn't multiplayer-focused, was completely original and didn't have gimmicky controls was almost 20 years ago.
BOTW formula is a blank slate. The only thing that needs to be ditched is the Ubisoft exploration towers, from there they can rebuild the Zelda formula in this sandbox environment. That is my hope, but part of me feels like Nintendo is going to be complacent and copypaste BOTW because the consumers don't know any better.
>old-school Zelda formula
Oh, you mean that formula you homosexuals were all b***hing about and saying how stale and hand-holdy it was before BOTW came out?
>we will never go back to old school Zelda formula because of OOT >we will never go back to old school Zelda formula after ALTTP >we will never go back to old school Castlevania formula after SOTN >we will never go back to old school RE formula after RE4
And that’s a good thing. Although you will probably get more 2.5D remakes for a while which is also probably for the best because a lot of people skipped them growing up
Best case scenario, open world Zelda becomes a 3rd type of Zelda that gets made regularly. Like how we occasionally had 2D Zeldas on handhelds along side the usual OOT type games.
Honestly don't see what they're going to do differently for the open world in future installments to make it worthwhile. Every game being a new tower, seed, and shrine grind is going to get old even faster than the previous formula. Maybe the sequel is taking so long because they underestimated the filler problem.
botw was good
that's subjective. Thing is, there are many games like BOTW, but no games like old-school Zelda (outside from indies)
>outside from indies
Name one
An indie Zelda like? Blossom Tales comes to mind, but I'm sure there are lots more.
>these do not count because I said so!
Many such cases.
they don't count because they don't have the same production values. Nothing agains indies but I'm gonna miss my AAA old-school Zelda shit.
I liked it but it definitely lacked a lot of what makes a Zelda game. My personal biggest gripe was the lack of progression. All the iconic items of previous games would have fit perfectly in this game like Pegasus boots for a dashing ability, roc's feather for higher jumping or just a hookshot.

How can you be sure?
>There will never be a Pokémon game made with a modicum of effort because of SwShit
PLA is the first Pokemon game with effort since gen 2.
gen 3*
they've gone on record saying that gen 4 is where they said "Ok this is going to be a long franchise now what are we gonna do about it"
Gutting out every mechanic and making it so you can throw pokeballs in real time. Wow.
>removed unimportant shit and actually improved the base gameplay instead of mindlessly copy/pasting the previous game
yep
They definitely didn't improve the battling, it was far worse.
min maxing passives == better gameplay
>I HAVE TO ACTUALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING? N-NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

noooo the game didn't let me hatch eggs by biking around like a mindless NPC or let me battle mindless NPCs with 3 magikarp
What the frick was his problem?
>>We will never go back to the old-school Zelda formula because of BOTW
Same, but with dark souls and elden ring.
This hurts me.
I don't hate Elden Ring but it feels like so many steps back in level design and combat compared to Bloodborne and Sekiro.
Is BOTW the best selling Zelda?
Yeah
I didn't realize all the other Zelda's sold like such shit
They actually sold very well at the time. The industry really ballooned in the last ten years. That's why it's sterile shit now.
1M sales used to be a major milestone for older consoles zoom zoom.
Oot didn't even outsell ff7 or ff8 until the 3ds rerelease
>They actually sold very well at the time
This. If you do a game_copies / console_sales ratio, they sold insanely well.
>game_copies / console_sales ratio
Has anyone done that before? Can I see it.
>there are many games like BOTW
What open world adventure games have BOTW's modes of traversal?
It sold amazing. The original Zelda was the fifth best selling game ever until the end of the generation.
are you an absolute fricking moron or what?
Industry is much bigger than it was 15-25 years ago.
gotta look at the installed base when considering game sales

What's the "old-school Zelda" formula to you OP? Because Zelda fans themselves can't decide if the 2D Zelda of the N64/Gamecube Zeldas are peak Zelda.
BotW is as close to “old school” Zelda style as you can get. A big open world to explore at your leisure and discover as you go
The only problem with it is that the dungeons all suck ass and there are no memorable bosses
>the dungeons all suck ass and there are no memorable bosses
So, like oldschool Zelda?
Yes and here's why it's a good thing;
Frick you.
>We will never get a FF7 Remake thanks to FF7 Remake

Never is a harsh word. Yes we will get bigger and weaker designed worlds out of Japan for a decade but that shit will collapse at some point.
>we will never go back to the 80's sword and sorcery aesthetic of the first 2 zeldas
We also never went back to the ALTTP formula because of OOT, ALBW was the one exception.
OoT was basically a 3D remake or ALttP though. Unless you mean 2d, then you're still wrong anyway.
OOTs design is very different from ALTTP. Youre pretty railroaded on dungeon choices up until spirit or shadow. Absolutely nothing like the freedom ALTTP gives you.

I think BOTW sucks but 2 could fix the issues 1 has and be pretty good, maybe.
What about the Link's Awakening remake?
At the rate BotW2 is coming along I'm not even sure if we'll ever go back to the new school BotW formula of zelda
Best case scenario, open world Zelda becomes a 3rd type of Zelda that gets made regularly. Like how we occasionally had 2D Zeldas on handhelds along side the usual OOT type games.
Wasn't BotW meant to be a reimagining of Zelda 1?
Zelda was never that good. Zeldagays should kill themselves for being acting like a bunch of whiny petty c**ts like FFXgays or Sonicgays.
Honestly don't see what they're going to do differently for the open world in future installments to make it worthwhile. Every game being a new tower, seed, and shrine grind is going to get old even faster than the previous formula. Maybe the sequel is taking so long because they underestimated the filler problem.
