What are some fun challenge runs?

What are some fun challenge runs? Of course there are the universal ones like damageless/deathless runs, low level runs in RPGs, high score runs, and speedruns. Are there any game-specific ones you like?

Examples:
SMS hoverless run
FF5 four job fiesta
TTYD pre-Hooktail Pit of 100 Trials

This question makes no sense if you don't specify what game you want to finish.

There's no particular game I have in mind. I just want to know what unique challenge runs are out there.

Depends entirely on individual factors, such as your skill with a game, definition of fun, level of autism and whether you have a life.

There are thousands. You'll need to be more specific. See above. Also need to know other criteria, such as how many likes and upvotes you're hoping to get from them.

      >hey guys what games are good

How are you people not understanding the thread's topic? It's really simple.

All of the MGS games are fun to do a pacifist playthrough of. Some CRPGs have low int moron playthroughs that are drastically different like neverwinter nights and fallout 2

RPGs that allow for party customization are ripe for this. The FF1 4 White Mage challenge was probably one of the most public challenge runs of the late 80's. One I always thought was neat was the party of Fools run in Dragon Quest 3. You are forced to rely on the hero for everything, requiring a good deal more leveling than usual. But provided you can reach the temple of Dharma or whatever it was called and get the Fools to level 20, you can convert all of them over to Sages and become stupidly powerful past that point.

Wanna take down the 66 Demon Lords prior to Sheltem in Might and Magic 2? Each one casts spells that can Eradicate your party members, and they hit for hundreds or thousands of damage each swing. You'll need to be at a power level far greater than you'll need for anything else in the game, including the Mega Dragon you aren't supposed to be able to kill. I only pulled it off with some severe cheating, I dunno how long it would take to grind up those stats and gear naturally.

Back when you could get the Equilibrium gun-kata's mod for Max Payne 2(not the Hall of Mirrors finished product), I had fun trying to beat levels with only the directional gun-kata attacks. It was tricky since I couldn't shoot that much above or below me, but it made for a very different style of gameplay where I rushed to position myself for a gun-kata and hit it for the i-frames that came with it. It also felt badass to pull off a split-direction gun-kata, shooting someone in front of me at the same time I shot someone to the side of me.

Suit-only Silent Assassin runs of Hitman games have always been popular. Blood Money kicked it up a notch by making it possible to do it gun-less on almost all levels, unless you don't mind using explosives at the white house.

I don't know what's so special about this one. The special weapons are often nuisances, it's more challenging to use them properly. I don't like using the weakness system either because they feel like a last resort for really bad players.

Anyway, Mega Man X without using the dash is pretty interesting. I also wonder how many bosses can be beaten without even using the wall jump, classic style.

Low% runs in Metroid are fun. Fusion 1% and ZM 9% are the standard examples.

Glitch runs are pretty funny, especially if you can learn to consistently do few glitches yourself by fast inputs or key rebinding. Apart from memory corruption shenaningans. Those suck hard.

    >Metal Max series

    - Solo run (don't recruit other party members)
    - Rental tanks only (you're only allowed to use your main tank if the story requires it like at the start of MMR)
    - Human only, no vehicles
    - Human solo run. Final destination.

    >Resident Evil 1/2/3
    - No saving, no sprays (only herbs)
    - Knife only, final destination

FF7 necrosis mod is pretty damn cool. You start off the game with one pool of HP/MP. You can never restore any of it for the entire run.
For extra fun do it solo

no miss (no death) is the gold standard for arcade and console games, but there is also no bomb, pacifist, using weak classes, only using weakest weapon, speedrun, scoring, etc.

A game is almost always balanced where no death is possible and the peak of skill, but it might not be balanced around, or just be really unfun and tedious for other challenge runs.

I don't know if it fits your question since it's an unlockable mode rather than self-imposed, but my favorite challenge in any game is REmake's Real Survival mode. I suppose you could add your own restrictions to it to make it harder.

Swordless run on the original Zelda is pretty fun, although you'll want to use save states when you have to deal with back to back rooms of Darknuts, since their hit registration with bombs is practically RNG and constantly trying to restock if you run out is a total slog.

Any "self-found" mode or challenge in an online RPG. In other words, don't trade for anything with other players, and go get it yourself.

Obviously there's Nuzlocke, which I am surprised no one has mentioned.

In DKC2 if you input the code B, A, RIGHT, RIGHT, A, LEFT, A, X (BARRAL AX) into the cheats menu, all the DK barrels in the game are removed.

Beating God Hand while keeping the "Kick Me" sign intact, which requires the player never using God Hands or God Reels all while making enemies stronger, unlocks a music CD.

Punch Punch Guard Break, High Side Kick spam with enemies near walls, heavy use of Axe Kick and Mid-Air Roundhouse Kick for crowd control. That'll get you around pretty much anything. The hardest parts of the game are Gold&Silver, the second Stooges fight and 8-1. For those you just have to pray.

Yeah I know and abuse most of the cheese, I guess it's just a skill issue for now. Guess I shouldn't feel too bad then, Gold and Silver is where I got stuck on Hard.

I know its the meme, reddit answer, but Pokemon Nuzzlock shit or whatever its called, BUT only if you customize it with your own rules.

I like to go back to them and do:
-each city is a "checkpoint" i can save my game at upon reaching.
-I can catch one nig in every "Route" and "screen transition" (buildings, caves, floors), but if I dont, i cant go back.
-KO is death, but just store in PC box in the morgue.
-if for whatever reason the game forces a party swap, you must take it (usually only done in the later games when someone gives you a mon) You can not swap out your party in the PC unless you need to replace a dead.
-I have to get into an encounter i cant run from in every chunk of grass (not connected to other patches) and fight every trainer along the way > if doing either of these requires a HM move, they are optional, but if I have someone who can gain access to them, I have to)
-item limits of 5 potions restocked per town, 1 of each debuff cure item, 10 pokeballs as max I can have*, no repels. As the game goes on, once higher level potions and balls are added, I can get them, but in smaller amounts (10 pokeballs, 5 great balls, 1-3 ultra) and adjustments to stock on potions(5 potions, 3 super, 1 hyper, later game as effect goes down, increase regular potion limit to 10)
-*this limit does not count for items picked up off the ground. So if i have 5 potions, if I find a 6th, thats fine, thats like a bonus, but i cant buy more then 6 when i reach the next town. same for "banned buying" items, so no buying repels, but if i find one, thats ok to use. Revival items can be found, but not bought and give you a free revive of a dead guy in your party or PC morgue.

Adds some interesting spice to some old games.

I just wanna do a couple of ordinary 1CCs: Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the highest difficulty setting, Battletoads without warping. One day I'll get around to it.
