If you consider the final area before the RAYs fight where you have to fight a bunch of Arsenal Tengu with Snake to be a "boss," it mirrors Psycho Mantis with the Fission Mailed screen and Meryl swapped with Snake (complete with being able to hurt and kill Snake by accident).

I think the idea was that his suit somehow makes his blood flow better or some shit, making his body bigger and perform better, which is why he turns into a blood fountain during his boss fight. Basically, kogenius pseudoscience as always.
source? i've literally never heard of this before, i thought it was generally agreed that it's the suit getting bigger and not him, and the yelling like he's going super saiyan and the blood gushing out at the end is just to be extra dramatic
There's an optional codec call (I think with Otacon during the final fight) that explains it. Some technobabble about the suit having artificial muscles that contract at certain moments to diffuse impact damage and give Solidus super strength.

That would've been neat if that was used to explain why Solidus could be old enough to be President when, according to the timeline of Solidus being made after Solid/Liquid, he was turning 30 and how he was commanding child soldiers in Liberia when he would've been about 15. He wasn't a clone, but he was "created" to be a copy of Big Boss.
You'd have to retcon some other shit but it would've been better than Big Boss in the first Metal Gear bring a one-off imposter that overall ended up being totally inconsequential to the series storyline.
