I believe in HGSS the game is actually "faster" as the girl because you get less dialogues that as the boy, so if your friend was into speedrun autism that may be it
I remember XY made a huge deal about the character customization but when it came out the male character literally had like 1/5 the clothing options, I swear there must have only been 4 or 5 shirts meanwhile every single girl I saw on PSS was wearing something completely different.
