Don't you mean speculation? Only morons are hyped for things companies pay for.

If they can whine and dine them better than the other possibles they'll get it and they won't if they don't.

None of need to care about it either way.

It's going to be between TotK, Starfield, and BG3. By the time the awards roll around and marketing hype for Starfield and BG3, I think it'll be down to TotK and Starfield. Between these two, it'll basically be a coin flip.

      >and marketing hype for Starfield and BG3,
Forgot to add "dies down" at the end of this. The main point was to say it'll come down to Starfield and TotK.

Journos love BG3 because it was the rare success story of a privately owned publisher releasing something that wasn't goyslop to satiate the demands of shareholders. It will be a contender for sure.

TotK is good but now that the honeymoon period is over ppl are admitting it's just BotW 1.5 the flow has worn off.

Delusional, it will be either Starfield or BG3, and only if Starfield actually is worth all the hype. BG3 is so hot right now it's making its waves even on Tiktok outside the gaming sphere

        Anonymous

BG3 is hot right now because it literally just came out. Give it a month and no one will care. Starfield will be held back by th failure of the Xbox

          Anonymous

that'll be 1 month longer than the ToTK hype lasted lmfao. The wave of youtube videos calling it a disappointment are already dropping, people are already calling it "BoTW 1.5".

It's a disappointment, not a bad game, but absolutely a disappointment given the development time behind it. Even the general is already fricking dead KEK. It just didn't have the legs bOTW had because it's literally a DLC

Deep down I have this feeling that it'll still win GOTY. Game journalists aren't exactly smart, so why would they actually pick a worthy contender for goty?

            Anonymous

A sequel on the same console never has the same legs moron because no one will buy the sequel unless they played the original but not everyone who bought the original will buy the sequel. Also as the generation goes on, the competition increases as more and more games are released. So software sales for each indivudla game are goimh to average lower.

That is a small bubble you have, the majority of people are still calling TOTK the GOTY.

            Big yes, huge maybe not.
I doubt it gets more than 20m players which is a far cry from something like skyrim for comparison.

Skyrim was lighting in a bottle, those levels of hype wont be reached again from Bethesda. From software is the new Bethesda in terms of Hype, but I concede that Starfield looks very promising

        >right now
This is the key part. This same kind of "hype" has existed for RE4R, TotK, and every other "major" release when they recently released. Especially here on Ganker for some reason. Also, people are already dying down on BG3 now that the post marketing dollars are drying up and the "IT'S SO GOOD THAT OTHER DEVS DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO" clickbait/drama type articles aren't getting the clicks anymore and you're starting to see people calling it more of an 8 out of 10 kind of game all things considered. Not saying you personally won't see it as a 10/10 game, but that once the honeymoon phase is over (and it looks like it's beginning to happen), it'll be just like TotK and the others where people who are more honest and balanced about the game start overtaking the people riding the hype.

          Anonymous

There's a twist though which makes your point not exactly valid: BG3 wasn't hyped up before it's release, all these others you cited were. The hype exploded after the game was launched, which can attest to the quality of the game overall, and that may make it so it's remembered afterwards.

As controversal as it was, it DID get very important marketing at a very important time. Nobody cared about BG3 or what it was doing until the "bear sex" scene. It got memed like nothing else did this year in games and was on every gaming publication, all over TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, etc, and even some non gaming publications. This eventually molded into a political shitflinging contest between "the left" and "the right" and grew way beyond just the game and happened right in the midst of a time where both sides are trying to prove themselves right ("go woke; go broke" and ESG being big examples), which is GREAT free marketing. This all happened so close to its release that the attention elevated it WAY beyond what it otherwise would have been.

I'm not at all saying BG3 isn't a good game. That said, it definitely benefited from lightening in a bottle free PR and marketing from striking the right nerves and getting the right attention at the right time.

That's true, but it's a good thing that it got the attention it got. DOS2 was already GOTY material, even if it had a silly story, the gameplay and world interactivity were beyond stellar, but it was too niche to earn any award, same with Pillars 1, which IMHO had masterpiece-quality atmosphere and story.

                Anonymous

It wasn't even nominated for GOTY that year yet somehow Horizon got and PubG got nods. BotW ended up getting it obviously, but I'm not upset about that one since I felt like it did earn it and deserved to be nominated. Divinity 2 DID get a nomination for best RPG but lost out to Persona 5 though. How much of that came down to quality vs. name recognition though, I'm not sure but it probably did play a role in it at least a little bit. I'm saying this and I didn't even care for DOS2, but that's because I learned I'm not a big fan of CRPGs in general. What DOS2 did do though was bring that genre back from the dead which I say is VERY impactful.

It's a spiritual flop. It has no lasting legacy beyond being a rehash of BotW.

It's going to have Galaxy 2 syndrome just like it was predicted by a few before it came out. TotK basically renders BotW obsolete if you're going in purely for gameplay since, mechanically and otherwise, it does everything BotW does, adds more mechanics, has a MUCH bigger play area, more tools to play with, and more. Compared to BotW, TotK is the absolutely better video game, but in terms of impact, because it is effectively BotW 2, it will never hit the same feeling and overall industry wide impact that the original did.

Which is exactly why it's going to be interesting to see the GOTY winners this time around. I think TotK will still a good amount, but it won't be a landslide for basically every major publication like BotW was. I see Starfield getting the large majority of the ones TotK doesn't get, and Baldur's Gate 3 getting the ones neither Starfield nor TotK get.

Totk will not be a galaxy 2 because the switch successor won't bomb so people will keep buying it unlike on the Wii u. They'll probably do a 4k BotW collection eventually too which will push it even more.

          Anonymous

But Galaxy 2 came out on the Wii. Your post implies that Galaxy 2 suffered because it came out on the Wii U which was a commercial failure.

            Anonymous

As a console gets old people start moving on. By the time galaxy 2 released a lot of Wii owners were not playing Wii anymore. Then the Wii u came out but it bombed so galaxy 2 sales just tanked. The switch 2 will be successful so many more people will buy totk for years to come.

              Anonymous

While I don't think the Wii U failing (or existing at all) had any impact on the lifetime sales or impact of Galaxy 2, I do think it was a mistake to not put Galaxy 2 in 3D All Stars. To me anyway, Galaxy 2 is the more fun, repayable game between it and Galaxy 1, but since Nintendo didn't think to put it in 3D All Stars, most people won't get to experience it. Not unless they emulate on a PC or have a Wii or Wii U. It's very unfortunate.

I expect nintendo to do another 3d all stars with galaxy 2, 3d land and 3d world for the next anniversary in 2025.

Japan used to make some great games like persona 5,dark souls 3,FFXIV,FF7R,BoTW,Animals crossing,Sekiro,Nier Automata,Xenoblade 2,DE,Super smash bros uli, Lost judgement, Nioh 2,Like a dragon 7,MH world,RE 7, Judge eyes,Death stranding and DMC5,(according to metacritics)
from 2017 to early 2020, but how can they fall so soon like Sandcastle and gets mogged by Hoyoverse so easily, for having no good game with metascore higher than genshin(81-84) since 2021?

MH Rise,PSO2:NGS,FF origin, Soul hackers 2,FE engage,Wild hearts, Wo long,FFXVI and SD gundam Battle alliance has shown the fall of the Japanese game. And so does Shin Megami Tensei 5, which was just an utter garbage. Even Worse, Honkai starrail ,Zenless zone zero and Lies of P will mog any Japanese video games.
Genshin,Starrail,Lies of P,Scarlet desert,Black Myth Wukong and Zenless zone Zero reduces DMC5,Dark souls 3,Sekiro, FFXIV,MHW,Elden ring,RE4,ToTK into a mediocre shovelware.

Elden ring was just a Fraud garbage like Cyberpunk because of shit optimization.
Xenoblade 3 is a Metascore manipulated because Japanese dev feared genshin so they manipulated metacritics like TLOU2.
At least we West still makes good game like Avowed, MS flying sim, D4 and OW2,Halo infinity, AoE4,Elder scrolls 6,STARFIELD,Modern warfare 2,BG3,MK1,Remnant 2.
BG3 and Starfield are absolute genshin killers.
Phil Fish was right. Japan has no where to stand in gaming.

Japanese games are dead. The time is for Chinese game, scarlet desert and lies of P.
Any Japanese game since 2021 with higher

I know you are hard baiting, and it's a good thing that China is growing on the gaming market, BUT Elden Ring could very well be a top 3 game of all time, objectively; so all your argument sounds cringe in the light that it came not even 1 year ago
