    The Naval faction.
Until I find out that navies are an afterthought and all that matters is either the science faction or the faction with too many military buffs.

Try English in Civ 3 Conquests. The addon added seafaring trait that always makes you start on the shore & gives ships +1 movement, plus English unique man-of-war got ability with certain % to create new MoW after destroying enemy ships.

I think in civ 3 navy is more important because unlike 4 where it can essentially only lower city defenses, it can actually destroy coastal improvements and bombard units like artillery.

        >Try English in Civ 3 Conquests
They are terrible, no idea why would you tell anyone to try them. Out of 31 civs in the game, they can't even make it to upper quartile. Hell, I would argue they would struggle to get in the top 15 to begin with.
Also, unless you get really fricking good map for Anglo (which almost never happens due to the way how the random seed operates), good luck making use of their bonuses in a way that stacks.

Except as the original anon pointed out, the RNG doesn't create proper maps for the English bonus to be worth it. Things like from

are not only rare, but when you look closely, you can see there were genuinely better spots for each of those cities and they were placed in otherwise lackluster spots solely to get the full extent of culture bonus, rather than being simply well-placed (on top of having too-sparsely placed city, because apparently some Civ 5 homosexual was playing it).
The most striking example is the abysmal placement of Nottingham and the city right below it. In chase after sea tiles, they've wasted BOTH whales and a cow, but hey, extra 4 commerce in total from Seafaring Commerce combo! Who needs twice as much from just settling your cities properly, when you can min-max your cultural bonus, right?

Scientific or cultural for me but I also like religious.

Navy also does that in Civ IV

      >Who'se got the ETA on that shipment of megabread?! I didn't kit those monkeys out with rolling hills of cereal crop utopia a week before the settlers even fricking got there so I could see anything less than one whole ass new pop a turn!
      >And for frick's sake someone get me another cup of coffee!

The bland faction, so I can first play the game straight, with no gimmicks or big changes to the gameplay and first see how things work.
Then I usually just stick to that, because in 9 out of 10 cases, the bland faction is also the only one that can gain maximum flexibility, rather than being tailor-made for specific circumstances, map and gameplay style.

I usually go tech heavy. Ride out the initial assaults by hunkering down, then when I have an overwhelming technological advantage, wipe out the primitives. Basically how Europeans conquered the world with inferior numbers.

    >literally just the Soviet Union
    >I like religion in civ 5 because unlike every resource it doesn’t scale to number of cities, so you can spam cities in a faith-based strategy , then reform the religion toward any victory condition. But otherwise the spiritual faction is kind of meh.

The industrious faction, not really high tech but has a massive potential economy. I like the slow build up of overwhelming stuff produced. Scratches the kind of realism roleplay aspect as in history typically having more stuff = win in the end most of the time.
