What is your opinion on the Syphon Filter games?

I've been feeling like a stealthy boy lately and I was considering trying out either this series or Tenchu.

I'm not sure as I've never played them, but every description of the game mentions the word stealth in one way or another.

This isnt a stealth game, its a third person shooter with some stealth levels. It aint MGS.

      Fricking this.

The solution to everything, excluding bosses, is "shoot them in the head". When it's a "stealth mission", it becomes "shoot them in the head - with a silenced pistol, from around a corner".

      Play Tenchu instead.

I think I stopped playing in some sort of wasteland level. I liked the snow and hospital ones. It's a game I wished to have played more in the past, but not in hurry to revisit it.

Played all three back in the day and I quite liked them. I can't remember much about them though, only that I found the second one to be the hardest. There was one mission, I think in the first game, where you had to tail someone in a graveyard. I had to do that one like 4 times because the npc kept freezing in place and I couldn't continue.

Loved these games as kids. Beat the first one a few years ago. I had fun. It was pretty good

These aren't stealth games at all, they're very action focused third person shooters with a few technicool gadgets.
They're also practically unplayable now. The controls were never great to begin with, but due to how the controls and aiming work combined with the downright bullshit difficulty in some sections, especially in the second game where the AI will repeatedly 1 shot headshot you over and over they're really bad games to go back and play now.

Loved these games as a teen, but I'm honestly a bit scared of going back to them.

ive only played the first one, not in 20 years, and only as a kid
it felt very smart and mature compared to other games at the time
it had some pretty neat little details, a good atmosphere, some fun weapons, but overall the gameplay just isnt very fun and the controls and graphics are both very dated.

SF had good looking face animations for PSX, and it was such a simple solution they employed for it (literally just sprite mouths).

    Tomb Raider Gear Solid.

It makes sense to take the two most popular 3D games, then make a new one. They're a bit jank, and crude. Sadly the N64 and later Dreamcast would be much better to handle a fully 3D title than the measily PS. The lack of analog for the original is also a pain. It's "playable".

    Love the trilogy, I'd rate them something like 2 > 3 > 1.
They still feel mechanically solid if you are a dpadchad, most of the times when you manual aim you are already at headshot level and just need to sweep horizontally. Every weapon is a one hit kill if you score a headshot, even shotguns work at long range.

1 has respawning enemies and isn't refined like 2 and 3. 2 has a very nice mixture of action and stealth, and 3 is mostly action but levels are long as frick and difficult. Some of the most fun games on the system. Didn't like the sequels on the ps2/psp, they didnt have the same atmosphere and magic to it.

Some old games have a hook to make up for the initially clunky, limited controls, resident evil, silent hill, these games aren't diminished because dynamic action isn't really the point. Syphon filter doesn't have that, it's just a plain, vanilla third person shooter, nothing to hide how primitive the controls are.

Extremely good games, the controls are easy but most casual scum nowadays get filtered hard.

The first game had a few frustrating moments, but overall, I had fun. The second game was Trial and Error: The Game.

    Played the PSX games recently.
Gameplay is basically third person shooter with an auto aim button that becomes more accurate if you are still, crouched or close to the enemy. Enemies work the same way when they hit you, you have a roll button to shake off their accuracy temporarily. They also have a cone of vision and you can sneak up on then when crouched, and some missions are actually stealth mandatory with manual aim.
The manual aim is annoying due to the low framerate. But if you manage to configure your controller just right and master it, the game becomes much easier. You just peek around corners and headshot enemies.
I find the shooting much better than MGS. The verticality makes the game more interesting, and the mission variety blows MGS out of the water. If someone could hack a better framerate, the controls would not be so much of an issue.

The thing I dislike the most is that some of the 007-like missions are badly designed. In the stronghold level on the first game, if you reach the end without killing all scientist and saving all of the subjects, you may not be able to go back, and it's a very long level. One subject is also extremely hidden on a window on top os some crates.
Also in syphon filter 3, theres this mission where you need to rescue scientists and destroy computers and I always forget one.

I replayed the game recently via PS1 mini console, and the first game basically is just 'abuse the taser as much as possible'. As the taser becomes the one weapon that breaks the game (not literally), but you can master the taser rather quickly and just light anyone on fire that gets in your path. Though there are a few exceptions. The game is cheesy mid 90's, complete with generic spy-thriller storyline.

Does anyone remember the TV commercial with the main character having a conversation to one of the random enemies about what gun to use.

Trailer is done with the in-game graphics.

And that I was Syphon Filter 2, but I guess the devs knew at that point how much of a 'meme' the taser was. The taser has a hilariously long range and lock-on targeting. I almost feel like cheating at times, since I spam it so often.
