WTF this is being made by Ron Gilbert's studio. Thimbleweed Park wasn't great and it constantly screaming REMEMBER OLD LUCASARTS GAMES at yout got old quick but it wasn't this sad looking.
Thimbleweed Park was excellent, and you can turn off the reference jokes if you want.

Respectfully I disagree and apparently they did add that option in an update. At the risk of sounding like I'm looking to be a contrarian I don't think it would make the game markedly better so I'd respect them more if they said "frick you listen to our references and you'll like them".

The proportions and anatomy of the characters is just outright bad. Cal-arts noodle arms would genuinely look better than the bizarre hourglass arms. Top it off with the soulless dot eyes and overly zany backgrounds and you have a visual mess that only a tasteless autist like Ron Gilbert would find appealing.

Pixel art using the technology of the time vs hires art made today. Even the EGA version of Secret of Monkey island cutscenes had eyes that weren't just black dots.

The artstyle is one thing, but holy hell the animation is so bad.
The animation is terrible because the artstyle doesn't work when animated. (not that it works well when it's just a still image either)
The limbs are made smaller then the fricking torso, which is just terrible because that's not how humans are built, meaning the animations can't feel natural, and the torso is also one of the least expressive parts of the body, the limbs are the moving and expressive part.
So to make the limbs smaller than the torso just gimps the whole fricking animation process.
The eyes being just dots is also ungodly terrible, because that means that the eyes, one of the most expressive parts of the human body, can't show emotion.
The faces are also built all wrong. The expressive parts of the mouth, eyes, and eyebrows, are diminished in size while the nose and the static parts of the face are made way larger.
this is like the most anti-animation artstyle I've ever seen. It feels almost like it was on purpose. It goes against every principle of cartoony animation.

Guybrush loses against everybody; that's been a staple of gameplay since the first Monkey Island game.
It was a bit too grindy for me, to go through repeated sword insult encounters in MI1 and 3, but you can't say there aren't black characters who are "stronk" and unbeatable.

Something like a hand drawn story book illustration. Best example I can think of right now is Creaks, but more in the style of Peter Chan's backgrounds from Monkey Island 2.

LeChuck's Revenge is still the best, in my humble opinion. It's certainly the best to play, and possibly the strongest when it comes to the atmospheric mix of scene art and music.

MI 1 and 2 worked because they did a naked gun type thing, where the mostly grounded pirate aesthetics played well with the contrast of the slapstick and meta humor.
MI3 already turned into a disney cartoon and this new thing is just fricking shit smeared on the screen.
But Thimbleweed park also wasnt funny but a dreary, bleak and cynical game. So maybe this will be the same. "Wacky" ugly cartoon style and unfunny bleak content.

It's a highly stylized low detail style that is entirely unreadable visually because it's so busy.
