The writing in Thimbleweed Park is excellent, and you can literally remove the parts you don't personally like. Your complaints are ill-founded.

Respectfully I disagree and apparently they did add that option in an update. At the risk of sounding like I'm looking to be a contrarian I don't think it would make the game markedly better so I'd respect them more if they said "frick you listen to our references and you'll like them".

It may be the worst art style I've ever seen. Worse than even Big Mouth. It's just awful.
The proportions and anatomy of the characters is just outright bad. Cal-arts noodle arms would genuinely look better than the bizarre hourglass arms. Top it off with the soulless dot eyes and overly zany backgrounds and you have a visual mess that only a tasteless autist like Ron Gilbert would find appealing.

The artstyle is one thing, but holy hell the animation is so bad.

      Anonymous
      Anonymous

The animation is terrible because the artstyle doesn't work when animated. (not that it works well when it's just a still image either)
The limbs are made smaller then the fricking torso, which is just terrible because that's not how humans are built, meaning the animations can't feel natural, and the torso is also one of the least expressive parts of the body, the limbs are the moving and expressive part.
So to make the limbs smaller than the torso just gimps the whole fricking animation process.

The eyes being just dots is also ungodly terrible, because that means that the eyes, one of the most expressive parts of the human body, can't show emotion.
The faces are also built all wrong. The expressive parts of the mouth, eyes, and eyebrows, are diminished in size while the nose and the static parts of the face are made way larger.

this is like the most anti-animation artstyle I've ever seen. It feels almost like it was on purpose. It goes against every principle of cartoony animation.

Guybrush loses against everybody; that's been a staple of gameplay since the first Monkey Island game.
It was a bit too grindy for me, to go through repeated sword insult encounters in MI1 and 3, but you can't say there aren't black characters who are "stronk" and unbeatable.
You didn't play those games, did you?
Across multiple games in the series, you always come back to Voodoo Lady or Carla the Sword Master for advice and to further your path.

        This is the right answer.
MI 1 and 2 worked because they did a naked gun type thing, where the mostly grounded pirate aesthetics played well with the contrast of the slapstick and meta humor.
MI3 already turned into a disney cartoon and this new thing is just fricking shit smeared on the screen.

A skilled, curious artist would join vidya back then because it was a new ground, an exciting place where you was building the future.
These days, what attractive does vidya offer to new talents? It's not an emergent medium anymore but a stagnated, sanitized meatgrind where your aspirations are to itinerate on what was already done. Derivative works, nothing original. Guess what kind of people are attracted to this kind of business.

Curse at least had textures to its graphics; Guybrush and the characters now look the same as the background scene.
It really does look awful. Someone should tell them that Flash is not around any more, and to put some proper effort in.
Make stones look like stones, and make characters look simply distinct. Everything is exaggerated angles and flat colors. This would have been laughed out of shop at any other time during point and click's heyday. It's insulting.

It's crazy how they managed to make this look ugly, cluttered and too simplistic all at the same time.
It's a highly stylized low detail style that is entirely unreadable visually because it's so busy.
How do you even manage to frick that up this bad?
Pixel hunting with that art style will be fricking hell.
There is not even a distinction between foreground and background, every line is crooked and the sense of perspective and scale is off too.
