I enjoyed it, major step up when his last game was ZTD. Had the energy of 999/VLR, but the story telling wasn't as strong. Lots of Uchi mindfrickery though. In his typical moronic fashion though, AI2 is somehow written to where you don't need to have knowledge of AI to play it. Who the frick would play a direct sequel without playing the prequel first?
The first game is better than the second. A lot of people will say it's because "Date is a better protag" but it's more than that. The writing is better and it's the first Uchikoshi title that doesn't rely on "gotcha" traps to excuse poor writing in an attempt to fool the player.
However if you like AI1 then AI2 is still more of the same just not as good. It has three times the bare feet if that is your thing

It's pure sovl, no mysteries to speak off, don't expect a WtC, but really great. The first episode is far better than the second. For the record, Higanbana 1 was really badly received in japan because it was so fricking dark, which (imho) is a part of what makes it so amazing. We're talking people receiving eternal torments in hell dark. And rapes. And mass killings. More so than Higurashi.
It was so badly received that Ryukishi toned down the tone heavily for Higanbana 2, i.e Touhou: The Higanbaning, everyone is having fun and tea edition. Which kind of missed the whole point, and dulled the social commentary quite a bit.
The Higanbana 2 chapter about the girl running up the stairs is a masterpiece, but all the others can be skipped withing missing out something.
Also frick you for making me remember that VN for the first time in three years. Now I'll need to binge listen to all its OST, probably reinstall it, and reread it from start to finish.

I think so. The normal routes are a bit by-the-numbers but the secret routes are pretty interesting. In any case it being a russian-original VN with a setting to match makes it stand out.
The sprites and moreso the CGs are a bit lacking but it really makes up for it with the backgrounds and music. The whole thing took me 14 hours so it's not too much time investment to check it out.

I've started reading Sekimeiya and it starts off really weird. The characters are introduced and you immediately have a triggering event with the room being filled with smoke. You don't even know where the characters are, who they are or what's going on, and it's just endless >guys, we can't leave, woah, what's going on??
I don't understand why they had to start the story with something immediately happening rather than build up to it? Think of Umineko but we start with the murders. You need the buildup before to get to know the characters.

You can't just have things happen when we don't know any of the characters, their motivations, what is going on etc. It's so weird. You don't need to start off interesting if the story is good. Hell, look at Muv Luv. You need to go through Extra and Unlimited to get to Alternative. Or even Full Metal Muramasa, besides the opening fight scene, takes a long time for anything to happen before you're with the main character. Most VNs start off slow and that's fine, and probably for the best so that you can attach yourself to the characters before anything happens. But getting into a triggering event so soon is just too sudden. It feels wrong.

Oh no, I agree with that. Sekimeiya was so boring I couldn't even stand to watch an LP of it. I'm just explaining the writer's thought process, as having a quick start does make a story more appealing. Muv Luv, like Umineko, gets away with the slowness due to legacy.

Should somebody interested in Visual Novels start by playing older/classic games in the medium? Because I assume as time goes on, newer VNs get a lot of their value based on how they deviate from older titles. What are some of the entry-level core VNs from back when the medium was kind of getting big (I think this was the late 90s early 2000s)?
For Western fans, the "classics" would be Fate/Stay Night, Muv Luv, and Ever17. Of those I'd say only Ever17 aged badly due to the author writing the same story over and over again.

Older is actually VERY old dating sims which no one reads because they're trash. What people read or are recommended tend to be the best the medium has to offer. The only old VN that people recommend is YUNO.
The best entrylevel is Kawata Shoujo, Doki Doki Literature Club by being short and simple. Then you can move on to something like Higurashi, Every17, Fate/Stay Night, and Grisasia. From there you just read whatever sounds interesting.

Im assuming that means up through the beach trip, right before you have to make a decision with each of the girls? Maybe I'm not understanding something here. Also, any other spoiler free tips i should know about the series? Im definitely enjoying Grisaia, but it's nowhere near as amazing as Fate or MuvLuv so far. Are the 2nd/3rd Grisaia titles considered better? Mind you, i have zero clue what they're about or what direction this story takes, other than that it's supposed to get exciting.

weird beginning, and it feels like it wants to be more of a point and click adventure type of game than a visual novel. Especially with the amnesia. Not that I mind since it's a common trope and games such as Planescape Torment, Disco Elysium and Amnesia the Dark Descent did it.
Writing wise, it's a bit inconsistent for an amnesiac to not ask a million questions about where they are. Drawing wise, the variation of faces that this girl has is really limited to just her mouth. But since it's very low artistic quality, I can't really demand much. It's also weird that she looks like a young girl/highschool while having her own lab. And the tone is really all over the place?

And its really nice to just have a VN where the ending is the part part because you can go "man that was a great ending" and not "this was a really good VN but the ending was kind of moronic"

You go through each character's name as a route option one by one and you get some sort of smug fourth wall breaking bullshit where they go 'hey reader, im x character and do y thing!' and the writers briefly interrupt the dialogue every so often to say the theme of x character was y.
I lost my damn mind when after reading all of them a poorly made cg pops up with a dialogue box saying 'thanks, please buy requiem for innocence!!!'. Holy frick. I want to kill myself thinking about it.
I think fata morgana might be the only thing I ever read/watched that I genuinely don't get what people see in it at all, and it's maddening that not only people like it but actually parade it as peak fiction

Voice acting is fine because it only adds another layer to the VN without changing anything. Changing the sprites on the first read is a sin and exposes all plebs but conflating the full patch and the voice patch both being bad is dumb.
It's not 2010 anymore and even then nobody is stopping anyone from going full puritygay and reading the original translation without voices.

No one really gushes for Clannad nowadays. You just watch the anime, which is imo kind of eh, but you watch it to watch Clannad After Story. iirc Clannad is 100+ hours. And the large eyes was indicative of its period, as even anime had this issue. The medium only figured out the proper size of eyes and their placement by the 2010s or so.
They stop looking insectoid after a while. Clannad is a real slow burn but well worth reading.

As someone who finished reading it a while ago, no. It's not good. The problem is endemic: The VN should not have been made with its premise. It sounds good but as you read it, you realize that it was a bad idea Raging Loop is the elementary school game of werewolves/mafia where you and a group of friends are in a circle, there's werewolves who kill people each night and you democratically kill someone. So what if you a cool game but with the drama of people being real rather than just playing a game.
The problem with Raging Loop is that it tries to explain game rules with mythology and then ends the story with the mythology. And more often than not, the 'people acting real to a dumb game' drags, even if some parts are emotional. But the real reason it's bad is that for 30-40 hours of reading, there's only like 3 official game, and with the exception of the last one, they're all kind of meh. And even the last one isn't good because the one thing that makes it good kind of fizzles out. The fat man is smart but then just randomly loses/dies and it's gg. Boring game. So by the time you get to the ending, the story really has to depend on the worst part of the story to end it, which makes it boring.
Raging Loop isn't good because it feels like a waste of time.
I enjoyed it. It feels like it should've had more than 3 main story routes though. Wanted to see how certain characters would've acted as a wolf, bit of a waste there.
I actually liked the ending reveals, but I had figured the big parts out well in advance. I can see how people wouldn't like it though.
