I didn't love the portraits, they were too linear and replaced having an interesting castle for the most part, having them be basically repeated right before the end was also somewhat of a letdown.
It does have a lot of soul and cute little details like the special animations the characters do when you hold up and the reaction you get for doing them in front of the shopkeeper and having 95% of the bosses from dawn just cause they had them but overall I found it a bit lacking.

The game has a lot of unique charm with its b-movie tier dialogue, fun music, unusual environments and settings, and so on. The game is also really challenging, in a fun way, and the game has a mechanic where it gets harder the better you're doing.
Its a game that feels really, really good when you're doing good, which very few games actually accomplish. Theres nothing like juggling people and then blasting them into buildings after breaking their guard or styling on a demon that can easily 1 shot you. It also has the most perfect difficulty adjustment mechanic and I'm surprised that no other game has ever emulated it.
It's a game that tunes itself up for higher skilled play. It's the adaptive difficulty which elevates it. The better you are, the better the game is, and not in a shitty way like re4 or max payne.
The best part about GH is that it tells you explicitly what your difficulty is, and you can lower it whenever you feel like it (if you're a b***h).
Shit like RE adaptive difficulty actually feels more artificial even though it's 'out of the way', as soon as you realize that missing shots makes zombies die quicker you think the game is just fricking moronic.
The difficulty increasing and decreasing based on how good your doing really makes the game amazing. Having the game throwing everything at you and still styling on it is an incredible feeling.
It's a really good game that people were mostly excited to discover and spread the word about. It's worth playing, but to really get the hype, you had to be there. I wish that British review of it that got a lot of people talking about the game was still up, I haven't been able to find it in years.

KMS is an intentionally placed challenge by the developers. One they clearly didn't think about much since the game falls apart attempting it on hard mode.

You get rewarded for doing a KMS run for beating it in any difficulty, not just hard, therefore there is no specific acknowledgement of doing a hard kick me run, you're only doing it for a self-imposed challenge.
You can also do it on a NG+.
