    tank controls.

If something is running straight at you, you have about 1 second to decide if you wanna start shooting or spend the 3 seconds it takes to turn around

I mean, gameplay wise the bosses were huge bullet sponges unless you actually knew what necrosis did.

3rd Birthday was a good game that had nothing to do with Parasite Eve and also no story because you skipped the cutscenes like a sane man.
The gameplay was ridiculously hard, sometimes this-seems-broken hard, but it was good

Maybe tank contols were common because they worked well. Not some revisionist history of "tank controls made it scarier, what genius game devs!"
Maybe you should just learn how to move better, shitters

Worse graphics mean that horror designs are broader ideas with details that get filled with your unconscious imagination.
Your own psyche will always be able to scare you better than anything else.

The fricking first level of parasite eve 2 had me in fricking fear when I was a kid. I ran out of the room when that b***h in the cafeteria fell over. That entire first level was a whole lot of NOPE as a kid. I remember playing it a friends house at night and playing that first level. Just frick no. Something about those old PS1 games just were extra freaky

I'd say another contributing factor is the pre-rendered backgrounds.
There's something really hard to explain about the feeling of moving in 3 dimensions over a 2 dimensional photo of a 3 dimensional space.
Feels like somethings jumping out of a painting at you.

I even get the same feeling playing some of the levels in FF7 and 8, which are obviously not horror games

Oh yeah, I had to hype myself up on the way to school in order to will myself to play it when I got home. Once I got Pyrokinesis and other magical shit I got a little braver but still, the mutants spooked me out. It didn't help when you get near the end of the game and they have those camels with the fricking human faces- but when you finally enter the Neo Ark or whatever and learn that the Big Bad Company or whatever was actually trying to SELL the parasite to people who WANTED to be mutated. It was doubly fricked up that there's these fetus type monster called sucklers and were for "People who would enjoy 'always being in their mothers arms, always being loved', as described by the company.

Fun fact, humans and other mammals get subconscious fear and paranoia responses upon their bodies feeling soundwaves within a certain range below the hearable spectrum, which is the same pitch large dinosaurs like T Rex would have vocalised

Actually an interesting point, do we find round, alert front-facing eyes staring at us inherently creepy or threatening because of instincts telling us to flee from a predator?

I think there's more to it, a monkey (maybe fruit eater, no sharp teeth etc) staring at you wouldn't seem too scary

that t rex looks scared as frick. He doesn't want this smoke.
like he's practically starving to death, but at the same time he knows I'd slap his shit if he tried to come over here.
So the result is he's sitting there intensely debating the risk vs reward of trying me.
