kingdom hearts, bayonetta, and katamari all have a high amount of ridiculous content. stuff that's insane, weird, all around entertaining because it's novel and strange. unabashedly japanese shonen turned up to 11.
i would say this factor is what unites these three franchises other than fun/challenging gameplay as you said.
