BOTH of them came out pretty late in the NES' lifespan. The Super Famicom was already out in Japan by the time the first game happened, with a US release looming on the horizon.
This. I fricking hate how zoomers are taking over discussion of any and all games with matters of sales. Sales =/= quality. Fortnite probably made a frick ton of money. Among Us probably made a ton of money. Doesn't mean they're good games. Fricking consumers looking at their purchases with the mindset that they're company stockholders and thinking if their game made a lot of money, then they "won" or some bullshit. Why did Startropics need to sell as much as Mario or Zelda? It still sold enough, it was good, people remember it fondly.
Startropics was really popular when it came out. The sequel happened way too late. Nintendo didn't continue it on the SNES because it would've overshadowed Zelda pretty hard.
Its one of my favorite NES games
I could never get into the sequel though people seem to love it.
Surprised it didn't really become more of a franchise
I love both games, but I think the IP could only survive in the Captain N watching, Nintendo Power reading, prime NES hype days of the west. Maybe we could have seen a SNES third game, but it always felt like ST to me and Mike as a character was kinda just a reflection of that era and specific mascot for that system. Mike feels like a stand-in character inspired by Nester and Captain N and both of those characters are tied to that era and faded from popularity and public conscious as well after. I would love nothing more then a 3rd and 4th game trying to be designed around hypothetical "what-if" games as if the series continued on the SNES and 64, but I just dont expect the IP to catch on with anyone except those who were into it back in the day or are hardcore Nintendo history fanatics (which despite how most obnoxious tendies come off, most know only surface level details about the companies past games that are not Mario or Zelda).
nothing, its one of the best games on the nes
I know that, but it didn't sell (especially the 2nd game) that well and never was able to become a series of games past the NES.
Didnt the 2nd game come out late in the NES's life? That's probably why.

I’m as cynical about series revivals as anybody but a Startropics 3 announcement would turn me into a hooting skyjack
Yeah it came out in 1994. NOTHING on the NES was gonna sell that year.
not only that, it was North america only
>never was able to become a series of games past the NES.
good, nintendo milks their ips too much as it is
>that cover
why was NES box art so powerfully comfy
>game didn't sell!
>console had bad numbers!
>redesign old games so they sell better!
>etc
I hate business nerds

Seconded
Nothing you fricking NIHGar

Another Zelda like was cool.
Startropics 2 definitely should have been a SNES game not a NES one.
>Internet - Interconnect network.
>Smog - Smoke fog.
>Hazmat - Hazard Material
>Animatronics - Animated electronic
>Romcom - Romantic comedy
>Telethon - Television marathon
>Electrocution - Electric execution
>Dumbfound - Dumb confound
There's lots of portmanteaus out there.
>clitoris - clit of rice, or the little bean
Don't worry if you don't know what a portmanteau is, you read them all the time without noticing. For example, the first letter of each line.
N
some of those are more like compound abbreviations than portmanteaux
Started?
Tazmat would be a cool Taz game title
I remember enjoying that game.
I own the sequel and have been meaning to play it for like a year. I've never played it before.
It was good. Never played much. Nintendo power ranked it high; talked about it alot. Good question.
