Australia has an underground sea/aquifer about that size underneath it already
we'll go 50 years with no rain and then get 50 year's worth of rain in a few weeks refilling it.
but the big problem we've had in recent years is corrupt govt officials allowing corrupt mates in the cotton industry take more than they're allowed in order to sell water to China and the US

      Not to mention

      >aww yeah, there’s gas there, now I know, literally everywhere else where we have fracked the earth we’ve poisoned the local environment and contaminated the water tables and underground aquifers….. poisoning this underground water source indefinitely…… but this time will be different, we won’t cut corners for profit, honest.

Possibly a more developed native civilization. Australia as it is, it's horrible. No adequate local cultivars, too dry. Even with modern technology, people only live in 5% of it, and Australia only exports grain because of industrial scale fertilizers. This seems like it would increase the diversity of biomes and species, and the amount of livable lands.

The lack of cultural/technological exchange with any other civilization would remain a huge hindrance, but there could be some level of Austronesian/Chinese colonization along the northern coast, before Europeans.

Anons might enjoy Lands of Red and Gold, an alternative timeline where Australians started cultivating plausible yam mutations.

If Australia had an inland sea it would become a global rather than regional power.
