Nintendo would never do anything as cool as the Pokemon Colosseum series ever again but if they did they should bring back more of the story and theming they used for the first game. I liked the idea that you had a partner who could see Shadow pokemon rather than just having a scouter, and the fact that the protagonist was a reformed gang member with an insane motorbike gave a lot of the game a more unique feel. And the broader themes of redemption and change played into the gameplay too, the main character was atoning for his misdeeds by helping the Pokemon become good again. A lot of npcs had similar mini-arcs as well, like minor thugs or shadow pokemon trainers totally turning it around and battling honestly after they lost.
Pokemon XD making you another self-insert kid protagonist made it just feel like a version of the main games with less of what the main game's core selling point is; the ability to catch pokemon. I did appreciate some of the larger area variety though. Modern day TPC would just make a buggy and laggy mess so this kind of stuff is best left in the past. If they do make a sequel I think it's worth adding some stuff that isn't strictly pokemon battling. It's another thing that makes the games feel a little too much like the main games without the advantages that those main games have.

Technically, he was suppose to be the/a villian in XD after defeating his old organization. They deemed that as "too dark" and decided against it, as you can see.
Less than being "too dark" I think it would more make all the events of game 1 feel completely meaningless. If they wanted to bring back game 1's MC they should've leaned harder on the Mad Max/Western inspiration for that whole continent and turned him into a wandering mercenary type that you encounter throughout the story. Could even be the set up for a third game. But like I said, it's all a moot point. TPC have proven they can sell 20+ million copies of a broken mess so why even bother doing anything other than the bare minimum?
If Pokemon sells 20 million with bad games, would they be able to sell 100 million with a genuinely great BOTW tier game?

On one hand, everyone wants a sequel to go absolutely batshit nuts and give us things like Shadow Arceus and generally raise the stakes and it would be the next logical step considering that Ardos plans to revive Cipher and has likely learned from its previous failures.
On the other hand, a the pessimist in me knows that the concept under the current direction would result in a watered down, safe, and underutilized experience which is far more likely than the alternative of it being a shocking and controversial off-brand deviation which I would welcome with open arms. Pokémon has always exceled at being slightly creepy so the Deviantart edgefest that people have always mocked would probably be the cure that this damn IP needs.
As a bonus, I would also love for the Orre games to get an anime special similar to Origins that goes in greater detail on the viciousness of Shadow Pokémon and Cipher's depravity.

Not a big fan of the artstyle in this game, it's that distinct japanese children cartoon style similar to yokai watch or a game like ape escape. Just gives off a weird cheap bootleg vibe, think the first game handles it better but only with the protagonists. mf drives a gay ass moped in this game
