it's supposed to be Dragon Knight.
IRL a Dragoon was British cavalry.

No, they were a thing in most of Europe.
On a sidenote, FF dragoons are called "Dragon Knights" in both the Spanish and French translations. I don't know why they never reverted it in the English translations when space was no longer an issue, like they did with many other terms.

historical dragoons were spear/lancer light cavalry who often dismounted to fight
FFXIV dragoons sometimes ride dragons but normally are foot infantry, but their ass crazy mobility echoes that of their real life counterpart

at least in ff14 i like to think that becasue they are supose to fight dragons, the spikes make it so that the dragons cant bite them or try swallow them in the case of the huge ones.

dragoon players are literally nothing but shitters drawn in by the cool look of the job. samurai came out and most switched over but still go back to drg once in a while. they are the M4A1 assault rifle of classes in fffxiv

They're homosexuals who can't use magic and or be manly like knights or warriors but less homosexual than squires.

Their main selling point is that they can jump really high and that's why they are known as the homosexual Black folk of final fantasy classes.

dragoon is what Final Fantasy's "Dragon Knights" were localised as in English due to character limits
they have nothing in common with dragoons irl outside of being soldiers
