asynchronous multiplayer, one person is the hero and one person is the crime lord dm that controls enemy behavior and spawning, Mr. X mode.

The appeal is the immediacy of being thrown into an extended street fight where you can punch/kick around a steady stream of enemies. I actually appreciate them more as an adult, especially after an exhausting day of work.

Yeah this is me exactly. Never liked them as a kid but is much rather fire up Streets of Rage 4 or Battle Circuit after work as opposed to some king sprawling game with a heavy handed narrative.

So honest question, was that new Streets of Rage any good when compared to previous beat ‘em ups? It seems like people are pretty divided on it.

It was good but it felt extremely short and aimed at people who were more interested in score attack than the game. Paradoxically, it felt both very short and that it was overstaying its welcome by the end. Personally though I liked it.

Ah, gotcha. I figured something like that might be the case as it’s one of those games that looked visually appealing enough for people not to look beyond the surface level. Might grab it on a sale, but otherwise I’ll just stick to the older beat ‘em ups. Thanks.

Streets of Rage 4 is completely worthy of its title. One of my favorite games of the past 10 years.

It was alright but not up to the standards of the genre's best.

Not having massive glaring loopholes or doing stupid shit like walking straight into an ongoing special attack or off a pit. Golden Axe's AI is notorious for how dumb it is on the latter example.

At the same time Golden Axe enemies are programmed to surround you, charge at range, etc. They are pretty worthy opponents until you get the true hang of fighting.
And Final Fight enemies are very agressive and effective.
I dunno what would cout as good AI in a beat em up if not being programmed in a challenging way.

"Bad AI" is a complaint I hear from almost every game in existence, yet I have never seen anyone give an example of "good AI", so I have to wonder just what everyone is comparing it to.

I liked Beat-Em Ups in small bursts at an arcade but sitting down at home and playing through a whole thing? I don't think I'd enjoy it.

That's your one complaint with beat em ups?

      Anonymous

Lack of depth, story, character development, tiny movesets, too simple strategy, bosses often require cheese tactics not intelligent play, non interactive level design, it enough items or leveling customization, nothing beyond waves of samey enemies with no AI mindlessly walking into your infinite punch spam etc

beat em ups are all about crowd control and I feel most of them don't really give you enough options to make it interesting, turn left or right and do the single combo string.

They're not so interesting but they are fun if you like the simplicity since they still offer a lot of challenge

They were more fun back in the day, mostly the awesome graphics and sound in the context of hanging out with the dudes. Agree they were of their time somewhat but still fun to chill with a bro.
